Portillo, or France?

Need some insight. I am trying to plan a trip with 3 other people, the options are Portillo Chile, or France. I was wondering if anyone had any opinion on either of the two. I figure I won't be disappointed anywhere I go, but I would rather here other's thoughts.

France, but then again, I've never been to Portillo.

A nice variety is to fly into Geneve, drive from there to Grenoble, then East and hit Alp d'Huez, La Grave, Serre Chevalier (stay in Monetier Les Bains), then either over to The Troie Vallee from the Maurienne side if you like the snazzy resort deal or go tour the teensy backwaters of the Queyras (Ceillac, Abries, St. Veran, Aiguilles).

We were thinking about going to Chamonix, a little like disney world but I want to do it before I die. If we go to France it would have to be in April, and that is the main reason we were thinking of Portillo. Any idea what France would be like in the spring?

I would guess conditions would be better in Portillo, but you might try to PM Idris, he's over there and would probably provide soem insight.

I haven't been to either, to I'm making this all up as I go, but isn't the exchange rate more favorable in South america?

Best time to go to Cham or La Grave is late March or early April.

Thanks for the link to teamdirt, just from the description on that page I think that is the place we want to go. Cheap beer, sun and snow. Any ideas if there are better places that Portillo? Thanks again.

Nope, never been down to the southern hemi.

There's been a lot of posts here and I have had other friends who have been down to Argentina and Chile and supposedly Las Lenas rools for steeps and size. I confess to regurgitating hearsay.

But ask DudeLeSkiBum, I think he's been to a lot of places there.

I spent a semester in Mexico and the night life is a HUGE reason for heading south, not to mention skiing in August. I will try to track down dude and Idris.

just in case you're still wondering : conditions for spring-skiing in France are highly random, I'll make it to southern hemi and try to hit french alps in february next year.

note that march is THe overcrowded month in La Grave...

Laps, in March and April there is still decent skiing in UT and such...so why not wait until July or August and opt for S. America during the long dry period otherwise known as "summer?" I doubt conditions would be very good in SA in April. (?)

If I were to go to France I'd go well before April b/c I too have heard spring can be sketchy there.

Skied to the valley floor on the 2nd of may...might be skiing Aguille du midi to valley floor on friday if the weather forecast is right...2800m vert in may!

I would be going to Chile in August, France in April. I am leaning towards Chile because it seems less crowded and I would be skiing in August. Also, latinas are hot.
