You should stick to posting stoke, that's definitely appreciated by all. Edit - said with no intent to restrict off-topic posting, of course.
I should stick to occassional lurking and trying to get work done, and let this drop off page 1.

I remember there being a different lag. Anyway, I own up to it. Allow me to apologize for it. But please note that I'm not KQ or MD9, who never, ever personally attacked anyone.Originally posted by mr_gyptian
Buster,
the reason I left for a while is because I moved and switched to a less computer intensive job. or more accurately to a job in which I actually worked( sorry Northern Trust).
secondly name an instance in which I've engaged in intellectual dishonesty concerning politics. or an instance in which I've personally attacked a person without first being attacked.
maybe I'm just not nuanced enough. but MD9 called her out and she's gone. weak sauce.
Did KQ attack you? Is saying "weak sauce" a personal attack or not? Maybe you don't think of it as such, but then again, maybe it could be.
Plus you're clearly not nuanced enough, it wasn't just MD9.
For example, any of your remarks concerning Michael Moore might be construed as dishonesty or at least an unjustified attack. Personally, I'm not a big fan of M. Moore, but I think he does have some interesting things to say and some things are overdramatized. Moreover your remarks regarding one not being "entitled" to anything one can't pay for goes pretty much against the notion of having a society. In that context, your remarks concerning Africans with AIDS were not exactly sensitive and in that context, you deserve some sort of wake up.

No, Summit. On some days she's put up with more crap than I have in my entire 1 1/2 year tenure on PowMag/TGR. Some of that stuff was incredibly vile, too. Nobody here should have to put up with that. I don't blame anyone for losing interest in TGR when confronted with repeated and pointless BS-ladened assults.Originally posted by SummitCo 1776

or history is longer than you know. I have known the woman who now posts as KQ in a lot of guises, you only here & only recently.
as to only 1 person leaving, you have no idea.
you and your ilk (its the internet we can be assholes with impunity, GOD BLESS ANONYMITY!) are ruining this place where many of us have opened our homes, our lives, our family to each other. we have met strangers at the airport curb but to be asked, bought meals for friends we only knew here, played hours of dice with people who wanted to kill time before a flight, & I could go on & on.
enjoy your sad little excistence 1776. I guess cynical & mean leaves you immune to loss and sadness.
I am a lover of high highs & low lows myself
carpe diem you sad sad little man
examples of naivete:
writer for UMass school paper:
"Pat Tillman is not a hero: he got what was coming to him."
Gonzalez writes that Tillman was a "Rambo" who probably acted out of "nationalist patriotic fantasies." In his own neighborhood in Puerto Rico, according to Gonzalez, Tillman would not have been considered a hero, but a "pendejo," or idiot.
-Michael Moore once again confusing terrorists in Falluja with revolutionaries.
-Democrats on the 9/11 commission:
The commission of five Republicans and five Democrats issued a statement saying Bush and Cheney had been "forthcoming and candid" and their input would be of great assistance as it looks to complete a final report by July 26.
Two Democrats on the panel, Vice Chairman Lee Hamilton and former U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey of Nebraska, left the session about an hour early. Hamilton, a former congressman from Indiana, was said to have had a prior commitment to introduce visiting Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin at a lunch
-Tom Lantos (D) California
"At a time when we are moving towards placing enormous responsibilities, following the handover on June 30, upon the United Nations and the Secretary General.... to imply dishonesty on his part is so contrary to our national interest that it simply boggles the mind"
in reference to "supposed improprieties" in the UN Oil for Food program.
This is just today and the sad thing is, I can go on. Naive, my ass. Liberals just believe American power is more dangerous than the tyrants, despots, and terrorists of the world. try hanging out on the right side of history for once.

By what measure was American power less dangerous than Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Cong?
By what measure was American power less dangerous than the Sandanistas or Allende?
By what measure is American power in its support of military juntas and regimes less dangerous than the Pinochets, the Noriegas or the Saddam Husseins?

what makes a person of worth on this board?
Is it quantity of posts? is it trip reports & pictures? Is it going to summits?
Or is it what makes a person of worth in any other context. Being someone you want to hang around with. Being someone who makes you feel better about yourself, who makes you laugh, who pushes you to expand your horizons.
I don't care that kumquat rarely posted a trip report. She filled most of the above criteria.
We say we do a pretty good job moderating ourselves. Where is the proof in that? I think we are doing a god awful job of it myself, and hope we clean up our act before everybody chooses to leave.

No, I don't think I'm really mean either. Yeah, I think I can cross sabers with the best of 'em when necessary, but it usually isn't. And yeah, I've gotten a LOT of love from literally hundreds of folks here (as well as those other places). And every ounce of it was and still IS appreciated. Hell, we're STILL going through "shitty times", but we're taking it a day at a time. That wasn't one of life's curveballs, that one was trying to take us out of the game.....
Having said that....Regarding THIS particular issue ~ I had an opinion about it LONG before this thread ever came along. I'd said things on some of the OTHER political posts (long ago) that were considerably more abrasive that what I posted in *this* thread. Could I have worded things more "delicately"? Probably. Guilty as charged. As I said to KQ early on in this very post, it was never my intention to ignore her OR her posts. She stated she felt like I was attacking her personally in some of her posts. If I had to break it right down, the root of that is probably the fact that she was the ONLY person here that posted the Anti-GWB / Republican political crap here on a consistent, almost daily, CERTAINLY weekly basis. Well, damn me for calling a spade a spade.
The love for our "family" that we've got here HAS grown & that's a large reason I've avoided the vast majority of the political bs threads in the last year or so. It just wasn't worth it to me. But to have it in your FACE on a daily basis? To me, it's too much. Honestly, it's not what I come here for. One person said it out loud and the dozens of people that felt the same way said so. As far as I'm concerned, it was time. We all feel strongly about what's going on in the world, and we aren't always sitting on the same side of the fence ~ But to beat each other over the head with our differences ever day tears at the seams of what I *thought* this place was all about. Simple as that.
I certainly never thought KQ would scoot over the things that were said, but apparently she has. I hope she comes back, she was one of those people I could count on to share an opinion that was very different from mine.

You and I went at a few times in the past, but if anything, I have as much respect for you as I do anyone ELSE here, because we were able to growl at each other & move on. Isn't that the way it's supposed to be? I wish I'd been able to meet more folks after the amount of time I've been here, but it just hasn't happened yet...I'm sure at some point it will. And when it does happen, which I'm very much looking forward to, I can't wait to match my OWN skills against a group of people whom I consider to be the "best in the business". There are posers and gapers among us, hell for all I know, I might be one of 'em. I certainly don't THINK so, but regardless ~ When the time comes, I'd happily share a room, ride, money, whatever ~ With anyone here. Disagreements or no.

I have stated numerous times that I did not agree with "containment". That is why I believe in what we're doing in Afghanistan and Iraq. The status quo was obviously not working in the Middle East. We are working to make a democracy, it takes getting your hands dirty. Do you think places like Iran and Libya letting in inspectors and giving up WMD capability are flukes?

I think KQ is gone and that is sad. She was an incredibly witty and intelligent member of this community. Her posts often put her in a position of vulnerability and I believe she actually had a rather thick skin. I almost never responded to those threads, because I simply didn't have the knowledge to respond intelligently. Doesn't mean I didn't read them.
Frozen, your response is what prompted me to reply to this thread. I was feeling what you were able to put into words.
This board has changed over the past couple years since i have been here. The flame wars were somehow less personal in the past. Now, it seems as though some of the aliases have been developed (and named) to specifically 'hurt' people, I'll be honest, as hard as it is to push my buttons, that has really irritated me.
I have opened up my home to quite a few maggots I have met and to some I have never met based on how they act on this board. However, the list of maggots who will not be welcome at my house continues to grow on a daily basis, bummer. More than likely, those whom I wouldn't welcome into my house, wouldn't ask anyways because they don't see the importance of this community.
