I've got to think this has been asked many times, but I can't find any threads about surf movies. (?!)
Especially interested in great visuals and a mellow vibe, but beyond that I don't know...whatever you guys recommend!
It's a new thing for me so I don't know apples from oranges here. :redface:
Uh, I mean real stuff, obviously - one online list started with Point Break.
Interested in the beauty and feel of the sport, not competition, etc - though a lot of vids seem to be about comps.

I just saw shelter for the 1st time and thought it was pretty good. Not the best but not the worst.

I really need to watch more vids as I really haven't seen that many.

zen and zero is really good one but not the kind of surf eye candy your going to watch over and over. for that I would get my eyes wont dry or one of the campaigns
First Chapter and Secret Machine are my favorites. Shelter isn't bad either.
Gotta go with Step Into Liquid. Would also recommend Riding Giants and Pipeline Masters.

The last issue of Surfer or Surfing (not sure which) asked the same question to about 10 pro surfers and they all had their list of favorites. Many movies were listed but the "Momentum" series had a lot of hits. "The Bruce Movie" is sweet and ranks high up my list.

There are others, but I would just rather watch this one over and over and over.
Blue Crush is the worlds best surf movie by far.... okay I'm kidding. Endless Summer is a bit dated, I orefer the second, but still enjoy it. Riding Giants has some sick footage... get a big screen!
I really liked Sprout. Lots of longboarding, if you're into that sort of thing.

Lost Across America and The Decline by ....Lost (Hands down my 2 favorite) especially the shots of Sandspit.
I watched Shades of Bali a few times the past couple days and have really enjoyed it. It has a really mellow feel and some cool interviews.
i picked up Thread last week, patrick trefz movie.
it was an art movie with some surfing in it. pretty cool
Searching for Tom Curren is probably my favorite that I've seen.

Riding Giants was the title...but sick yo and fun as shiz seeing Titus, JLope, Brock etc.

Great list guys - thanks so much.
I got Endless Summer II but found out that it and Endless Summer (and a couple others from the same company) are cut down to "Full Screen" size, as opposed to "Widescreen" - so you get to see, well, some of the movie but far from all.
Even the VHS versions were in widescreen, ffs. Grr.
Why do companies even make "full screen" versions? And why would this one have ONLY a full screen version - especially considering waves are wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide.

I thought Absolute Mexico was a great film as well. This one and Shades of Bali provided great info on "other" surf scenes in the world and both of them had a really chill feeling, like being in those locations while watching.

The Bruce Movie
Falzon's MOTE is cited as the best surf film of all time in many lists. It features debut footage of the Bukit Peninsula (Bali), and the surfing of Michael Petersen. Endless Summer by Bruce Brown is right up there as well and is easily the most popular surf film ever. Brown's son made Step Into Liquid, and Endless Summer II, both pretty good but formulaic, and more goofy storytelling than most can tolerate (unless you are a Warren Miller fan).
McCoy is generally regarded as THE best water cinamatographer in the business and that, combined with a Billabong budget, allows him to make great films. There is a great compilation of his early work here at Surfer Magazine. He may be the inspiration for Bali Strickland, who held an additional camera on McCoy's Blue Horizon and Free As A Dog. However, Strickland takes the work to the next level. Stepping Stones is pure stoke, a must-see for any jaded surf snob, and has a sick soundtrack too. His show reel is here on YouTube. All of his work is highly recommended.
Surfers by Gotcha is a flat-out great history lesson without trying to be. A great film but good luck finding it - it's out of distribution. Captain Surf is not well-known but its claymation, homemade soundtrack, and footage of a young Tom Curren at Rincon makes it a keeper. Video production is horrible!
A great place to buy DVD's is Action Sports Video because they stock hard-to-get items like Falzon's MOTE.
Re: Great visuals + mellow vibe - drop any McCoy or Strickland in the DVD as background and even your non-surfing friends will be fascinated. I play The Free Way muted on the flat screen when interviewing renters for the vacation house and it usually closes the deal.

After a few decades of crappy New England summer surf (MA, RI, NH) I bought a house in Panama near the beach. Riding Giants is good too, but I prefer vids with surf I can visualize myself getting into, not conditions where I would be sh*tting myself on the beach!
