I want a surfboard

So we're settling in in Lauderdale. Rented a house a 5-minute walk from Commercial Pier in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, which boasts a left as soft and mushy as PuPu's momma. Sadly, though, it's not as consistent.

Anyhizzle, I want to get a board for the rare time it breaks but I haven't surfed in, like, ever.

I don't want a longboard. And I won't be able to ride one of those little potato-chip rocker things either. I'd like something I can pump and turn but will still float my fat ass. I'm 6'0" and 180 when it's not college football season.

Are fun boards really fun, or just easy at first then slow and kinda boring?

Tuffy, you should send me your new Merrick, since I'm related to the dude and you aren't going to surf much the next year.

for ft lauderdale area, you won't be seeing much over knee high unless it's a hurricane passing by or maybe a huge nor-easter. mostly, it will be flat. a one board quiver won't work. a longboard would be much more fun in knee high surf. and for the rare big swell, you will want more than a funboard.

Thanks, ripz. Yeah, I'm not expecting to get on the board often in Lauderdale, though it was chest high right when when we got here.

Oh, also, we'll be travelling to Jupiter and Stuart probably once a month to visit family, and St. Augustine a couple times a year. So it might see more than lauderdale slop, but not much more.

I'm a big guy (6'3'' 235 lbs) and can ride my 6'4'' retro fish in knee high waves just fine (I choose not to, but just saying....) If you are adament about stearing clear of a long board, the retro fish is a blast and pretty versatile... just my .02

try kiteboarding... you will be hooked, check my avatar. ride the wave both directions.

"Fun Shape" as they are much easier to paddle, catch waves, etc. These are the weekend warrior, beginner, or recreational surfer's preference. In the S. Florida area you know waves are much less consistent as swells from the east and south are usually blocked by the Bahamas. Pretty much North or NE swells are this areas best chances for surf. So summer is the most inconsistent time of the year in S. Florida. But late afternoon wind can kick up small but ridable surf sometimes, even when its been lake flat all day earlier. So maybe get a fish for tiny surf if you dont want a longboard. You'll probably be driving up the coast to at least Fort Pierce Inlet for more consistent surf anyway.

I can't say I've ever seen anyone actually surf on a funshape - they seem to be for people whose definition of surfing is sitting on a board in the middle of the water watching other people surf.

Surfing is great, I grew up surfing crappy little new england slop waves.When you add a kite to the equation these junk waves become really fun. I was just down in Cape Hatteras for a week and we did a bunch of "ocean downwinders", meaning: you leave a truck 12 miles downwind of where you start, drive up and rig up. It's onshore wind so you really can't get in much trouble.12 miles of back and forth in the waves takes about 2 hours. That's 2 hours of powered up waves.No paddling, no duck diving, no standing up and making 2 turns and having to paddle back out for 10 minutes(I hate paddling).
When you get down to the truck, 2 guys drive back up 12 miles, get the upwind truck and come back down to do it all again.

We're on 13s. Blue is Yarga Pro c kite and green is Waroo Pro bow kite.I was on a 147 wavetray and green is a 130 Best Pro.

I wore them. Sure, they're kookalicious but they are really useful. They definitely make paddling easier, especially when paddling for a wave.

I think the theory behind the Biscuit is sound. At least it all makes sense when it's explained to you. For ultra-small mush I'd prefer a Biscuit to a fish based on the theory of both. In practice, I don't have experience on either so I can't say. FWIW I'm looking at getting a Biscuit-type board for teaching my son. Between my kids there will be years of small waves so this kind of board will hopefully enable me to have fun in the waves I'll be hanging out with them in.

You might have a read of Swaylocks' forums. There's a lot of tech info and I'm sure they'd be willing to give advice on this question (although you'll probably get 100 different answers).

The Biscuit looks like a good choice too. The Sashimi would probably ride faster and generate more speed due to the tail, but not as carvey or loose as the Buscuit.

I lived/ surfed the Right Coast in the Jax Beach/ St Auggie area for a few years. One of the most popular CI boards was the Flyer. For good reason as this board rips in knee to overhead surf. A Flyer with a little extra width and thickness might be a better option for one good all around board.

While down there, keep an eye on the reports up the coast. It could be flat in Ft. Lauderdale, but totaly ridable and fun an hour or so north.

Your over estimating your weight factor. 180lbs is not that heavy for 6 foot height. If your going for the Flyer, the extra width and thickness of these boards allows you to ride it shorter. 6'4 x 19 1/4 or 19 1/2 would be good. Contact the guys @ The Surf Station ((904) 471-9463 ) This shop is also the East Coast CI warehouse. They are cool people who are really helpful.

My nephews went to Flagler and know the guys at Surf Station. One's in St. Augustine for a week or so now...gonna give him a call today. It was head high a couple days ago but has flattened out so I'm less antsy but it would be nice to have something for the next time it kicks up.

So, for supposedly always being flat the pier here has been surfable 2-3 days a week for the past 3 weeks. It's not pretty surf, but there's sort of a line and usually no one out.

Heading to St. Augustine and will problaby go flat and fat since I realized I totally suck.

PS: Willywhit, there are tons of people kitesurfing here. No fucking way am I doing that shit. They're like 500 yards offshore going eleventy billion miles an hour one minute, and on the sand the next. With my vision I'd get into way too much trouble on one of those things.

no worries, I guess kitesurfing is a good alternative when the waves are blown out. I just spoke with a brasilian friend of mine that recently moved to Deerfield Beach and he's kiting alot and loving the area. We used to ride dirtbikes together alot up here in Mass and he's become a lifelong friend.I might be heading down there in the Fall for a visit on the way to Brasil.:cool: have fun !

I got a glimpse of a normal summer day last week. Evening looked good the evening before: waist-to-chest and not too terribly blown out. I've been getting back to my little-kid bodysurfing roots. Then the next morning it was like a freaking lake. Flatsville. So weird.

So I went fishing and caught a snook from the beach :).
