TR: Return of Winter in Crested Butte!!! 3/28 & 3/29

The National Weather Service had been calling for Winter Storm Warnings in the mountains of Colorado. But, Crested Butte ski area only received a TRACE each day! What a disappointment! But you could look west and see a big looming cloud over the mountains. So we went to see what we could find.

We found a snowmobile graveyard.

What an amazing trip. The pow looks so good... and sounds like he's a definite keeper :)

Wow, I've seen 4x4 truck graveyards in the winter, but not sled graveyards.

Well, okay.... it's REALLY a snowmobile parking lot. Folks here are just too lazy to take 'em home with them! :rolleyes2 Or they just don't have a place where they can keep their snowmobiles, or don't have the $$ to buy a trailer..... something like that. I thought I might go and borrow one for the day, but Karma got the best of me. ;)

Don't worry, the ski area is just as bad if not worse than when you were here, it's just the backcountry that improved :)

You look like the Easter bunny in those pastel colors. Good to see winter is still around. Hopefully it will last through next week here in Cali.

I am headed down there tonight. Was all excited, saw NOAA's forecast of something like 8-13 total for the storm. And barely an inch. BOOOO!!!

I won't be there with any skinners/bilers, so it's rocky resort for me!

Praying for sunny warm weather, maybe I can console myself with slush bumps.

They don't call it the doughnut hole for nuttin.

Danno- If you get some warmer temps the resort will be fun. A few days ago the resort was skiing really well... perfect spring skiing conditions! The main problem is that they don't have much open. They never opened Third Bowl this season. The front side chutes are pretty much melted out. And they don't have Pheonix/Spellbound open much (which means access to Staircase is gone) b/c they are worried about wetslides. You will find good snow on Headwall and the adjacent glades. I also really liked slushy Cesspool!

I think it is a great look, for maggettes of course, especially with the season upon us. Happy, soon to be, Easter:)

not too too familiar with the headwall. any basic directions? we did "big chute" (think that was the name) with don pedro a few weeks ago, but before that I hadn't been up there in years.

Goldenboy is right - my experience is a bit biased. Actually the stuff to skiers left of the Handrail above Angle Gully looked good, and below the Rabbit Ears as well.

Anyway Danno, after taking the Silver Queen then the T-bar to the top (not midstation) turn left up the sidestep then as you start heading down there are entrances to your almost-immediate right - don't go too low or you'll miss the top of the Headwall.

gunners right (just left of the trees on the right) = main part of the hedwall
gunners center = angle gully
gunners left = rabbit ears area (btw, going through the ears is IMVHO one of the very coolest things you can do), almost always if you take the effort to go out past the ears there's some soft(er) turns to be had although you blow a lot of vert.

Ah yes, the old ear canal. Almost like cave skiing. The traces of snow we had this week actually made for some pretty decent skiing today.
