So.

Being the Masochist I am. I am willing to take on all comers in a round of "ASK ODIN YOUR COMPUTER QUESTIONS"

NOTE: I will invariably deride your computer choices and make fun of your technique.

Second NOTE: I will summarily require or not require Hijack this posts, however most of those aren't going to help me.

THIRD NOTE: I can help you most with networking/troubleshooting/issues with interrelatability. The phUnk/md9 class for video/graphic problems is down the street.

Here is one to start with:

THE GREAT JCB.DLL ESEUTIL PROBLEM

There is an issue out there while running eseutil to defrag your exchange database that after getting to 10 percent or 20 percent you will get a message giving you information about the JCB.dll. Your exchange defrag will not continue AND the information that links to Technet site does not help you.

There isn't much info on the web about this issue, and most of it won't help you fix the problem. Websites will tell you to run the best practices analyzer for exchange and fix related problems. While this is a good idea, in a running server environment it can be difficult to reboot the server to fix these registry issues without hacking off the man.

Plus this won't fix your problem. The defrag on the private store will still stop after 10%.

So here is the issue. In the install/placement of the eseutil, many admins copy the eseutil to a new directory (IE mdadata) to help run the defrag from the command line without remembering alot of long paths.

HOWEVER THIS IS THE PROBLEM.

If you try to regsvr the jcb.dll file it comes back with an error. The reason for this is that the jcb.dll doesn't need to be registered in a specific area. You need the eseutil, the jcb.dll and the dependencies of the eseutil (msoxa? and others) in the SAME directory. Copy all the necessary files to the correct directory, or run your eseutil from the Bin directory and this will allow your defrag to complete.

Wow! Your timing is excellent! Here's my problem:

I have Media Edition of Windows XP from c. 2000. For a long time (until last spring basically), I didn't have internet service at home, hence I didn't run any Windows updates (e.g. service pack1, 2, etc.).

OK, so now here it is, 2007, and I, finally with a DSL connection, decide to install said service packs so as to run some new fangled software that won't work without them. I download the packs to my hard drive and attempt to install them. About two steps in (as soon as I get through checking "OK" to the Microsoft disclaimers) I get a message stating something like "Expected Version of Software not found on your Computer" and the process aborts.

Any ideas? The fine folks at Microsoft refuse to help me unless I pay them $79/hour. I am thinking about simply buying the service pack 2 full upgrade ($99) and trying that--at the worst it gives me free Microsoft tech support...

Dutchie. Just to clarify.

You have Windows ME... or Windos XP Media Center?

One more thing as well.

ME is not supported any more on any level
ME was one of the biggest loads of shit microsoft ever dumped on the viewing public.

However the error that you are getting is inconsistent with rollup packages.

My guess is that if this is your software, you inadvertantly downloaded the xp media center or xp sp2 patches for ME, which won't work.

The way I would look for your updates is through Windows Update. (www.windowsupdate.com)

HOWEVER if you have perchance media center 2002.....

THEN you need to let me know which service pack/hotfix you are trying to run first. (# that is referenced in microsofts website/what the name of the file is after downloading)

That will give me a better understanding.

For example: There is a patch out there that upgrades functions for access to a different level. However running this patch BEFORE you run another hotfix results in the error message you recieved ( a common error message) In this case you need to run the hotfix first, then the patch. So often times it is the case with certain hotfixes and patches. I would look for roll ups and read the information within the hot fix notification... .for example...

This shows that unless you have the correct .net application installed you won't be able to install the rollup.

It's a process that will take some sleuthing but not too much.

Thanks Odin--I am at work now and can't remember my exact specs: but I definitely have XP Media Edition (not ME); must be from '02. In anycase, I am pretty sure it is the very first version of XP Media released.

I did run www.windowsupdate.com--it would search and search for what I need and eventually time-out. So, I manually downloaded SP1 & SP2 to my desktop; attempting to run either gave me the aforementioned message. I am thinking that there might have been a pre-SP1 patch/hotfix that I need as you suggest.

In anycase, I will give your suggestions a whirl tonight--thanks for the help!

I no longer get sound from websites like youtube. The volume is up on the imbedded vid and the speakers are on and connected and all that. The little speaker icon in the tray at the bottom of the screen, however, told me that some software was not installed, and now it isn't even there. I still get sound when using media player or quicktime. What the hell is up?

If you install the K-Lite codec pack, and then run the "Codec Tweak Tool"

Start > Programs > K-Lite Codec Pack > Configuration > Codec Tweak Tool

Then check the box next to [Registry] Fix non-working system sound

It should fix the problem (Did for me)

Don't know much on the guitar stuff, but there is a cool adapter that runs laptop hard drives into a normal desktop hd connection. So if your laptop shits the bed os wise you can still bring up the hard drive, mount it, and copy all the data off without losing so much as a cookie

I feel stupid for posting this, since I usually can offer people help, not ask for it, but w/e.

What have you done on the side of troubleshooting in the display properties.

It appears the the mobility rage series has had some shortcomings in the relationship with dell area. However your error sounds something akin to an issue with refresh rates, or res size.

If you move both of these to default or less settings does the issue still happen? If you go to a standard vga driver, does the issue still happen. The idea with this kind of problem is to first find out if anything you do can fix the problem, then troubleshoot there.

For example. If changing the refresh rate or res fixes the problem, the issue may lie in the interrelationship with your video card and the capabilities of the dell itself. Simply put, your video card might do more than the dell can handle.

Since windows media player is more tied into your system issues than quicktime it would make sense that you would see issues there.

I guess the question is..... what have you tried?

This happens to me on this site sometimes. I find if i go to the actual youtube page the sound will work, just doesnt work with the embedded video for some reason

Okay here's a question: I partitioned my drive about a year ago, with windows xp, but I made my system partition too small and now the computer is slowly degrading into a piece of arse. Is there any way to enlarge it without losing data on the non-system partition? or should I just throw everything out and start again (with a mac)?

Well, not for free unfortunately.

However you can give partition magic a go. Other than reinstalling/reformatting your drive, there aren't alot of freeware tools for repartitioning, that I trust that is.

I haven't used partition magic in forever, but it might be able to repartition your drive without hosing your system. However, from what you are saying you have two partitions.... system and non system.

I think you might have a problem extending the system partition into the non system partition regardless of what software you use. Just back up your data (buy a western digital usb storage drive) then giverhell. A reload will do your computer good.

A) how the fuck do I deactivate a device CAL once it has been permanently issued? e.g., if you buy a new computer to replace an old one, surely you don't have to wait 40 days until the CAL for the old computer expires. Do I have to call Bill Gates? Is there some way to force the deactivation of a CAL? I see nothing available and googling has got me squat.

B) Terminal Services Manager does not run properly when I log onto the Server. It opens minimized. When I switch to it using Windows Task Manager, the window comes up, but it is not responsive. If, however, I open Terminal Services Manager from a remote session, everything is normal. WTF?

Please help me (mainly with problem A. problem B is annoying but not so bad)

We are talking about issuance of device cal's in terminal server no?

Ok, as far as issuance and reissuance and deactivation goes:

All of this happens through the Clearinghouse for microsoft. In other words.

Say I am in a 2003 mixed mode environment migrating my terminal server from 2000 to 2003. After going through the intial setup steps on my new terminal server I get my temporary licenses and now am ready to set up my cals on the new server.

I have to call the clearinghouse (# found through the licensing manager and going to activate and selecting telephone) and tell them that I want to deactivate my terminal server and move the cals to a new server. The will deactivate and then reissue your cals from your old server to the new one (via your involvment of course)

Here is a friendly white paper on the hand removal of a cal from a device by way of the registry BTW.

2. Locate the following key in the registry:

Try to connect to a Terminal server. This causes the generation of a new hardware ID. This enables the client to request a new license, and to successfully connect. The MSLICENSING key and all subkeys are recreated.

As Always extreme caution should be taken while modifying the registry and if at all possible use other methods before going to this solution.

Let me know if this solves the problem.

Open up terminal manager and get it full screen in your console session (or if you are standing right at it)

Then instead of closing out via the handy X, use ACTIONS, exit.

THEN, open up terminal manager (it should open up full screen), MINIMIZE the window, and right click it on the toolbar and select close.

The next time you open up terminal manager, it should open up at the bottom only. if you reverse the steps above it should open full screen every time.

Windows Firewall: Friend or Foe (definitly foe)

After the installation of SP2 to your machine you may notice the new features in the security center of Windows. Namely windows firewall. Now this may SEEM like a good idea, but there are many many drawbacks to running windows firewall. The difficulty communicating via ports on the internet. Running internet gaming, running services from your computer and on and on and on.

So You decide to turn it off..... right?

Well no go kemosabe. If you decide to turn off windows firewall it will automatically re-enable itself.

There is only one way to slay the beast. Turn it off completely at the services. For this exercise you will need a windows xp sp2 computer.

Step 1: Center yourself

Step 2: Empty your toxins (some suggest a barium enema or perhaps a nice chi cleansing) I suggest drinking a beer.

Step 3: Start, run, services.msc, ok button

Step 4: Find the Windows firewall and internet connection sharing service.

Step 5. Properties (or double click) Turn the service to disable and stop the service.

Step 6. Download those fetish pics of Georgette the goat like you wanted too in the first place.

I have an ad hoc 802.11b network of 2 win xp boxes, using ICS for a Sprint wireless connection to the tubes. Everything's working fine thus far.

Problem: I need to extend the range of that network to the neighbor's house.

Solutions?

I haven't done my share of research yet, but afaik plugging the WAP won't do the trick since that would break the ad hoc... Repeater? If so, how does that play with the rest of the devices? I have never worked with one...
