edit: As for your hypothetical, I imagine Bush would demand that they be released immediately, give a deadline, and then forcefully return them at that date. All which would be legal and good in the eyes of the world.

Yes, GWB is a doof. But I guarantee it, if Iran captured Americans, we'd go in and get 'em. And you'd most likely not even know it happened.
Edit: If you want to know what I mean, watch some of the shows on the History Channel and the Military Channel about the Air Force Special Ops, the Green Berets, the Army Rangers, the Navy SEALs, etc. They know what to do, and can be there and back before breakfast. Stop watching so much 24hr news. And understand that, in spite of all the criticism the media puts on the military and the government, we have the absolute best military in the world and special forces trained specifically to accomplish their mission anywhere in the world, no matter the situation or condition. This has nothing to do with being for or against the administration; for or against the war, etc.
Iran will not capture Americans. That would be suicide. Rather they will fund terrorist organizations to bog down the U.S. in Iraq until they can get their nukes. Then all bets are off.
I think the question is what CAN GWB do? The answer is - not much. Mostly because he spent all of his 'political capital' and now faces opposition and distrust on all fronts. A nuclear Iran is a real threat. The best we can hope for is for GWB to buy time with sanctions until the next president who will then have to do something about it.
