June Mountain: First victim of the shit snow year

From 'de local news:

June Mountain Ski Area will close for the season on Sunday, Jan. 28, because of a lack of snow, resort officials announced on Saturday.

"The three-to-eighteen inch base and the ten trails June Mountain currently has open are no longer providing a quality experience for visitors, forcing resort operators to make this difficult decision," said resort spokesperson Dana VanderHouwen.

She said people holding season passes for June Mountain will be taken at Mammoth for the rest of the season.

She said there is no chance of the resort re-opening.

"The late snowfall this season, coupled with the fact that most employees will likely leave the area, means June will not re-open this season, even if there is a radical improvement in the snow conditions."



On the bright side, I now have a season pass at Mammoth. That doesn't fix the fact there's no snow there either though.

wow. When was the last time this happened? I haven't been around for a long time, but I have never heard of a resort out west opening, then closing mid season due to lack of snowfall. I am sure it has happened before, though.

Brutal. I ski there instead of Mammoth to avoid the lines.

I am not surprised, good on Mammoth for taking the passes

Yep. Mammoth lift tickets are normally valid at June, but not the other way around.

June and Mammoth are very special places to me.....

Since i was 6 ive been going up 10-15 times a year to both of those mountains, and its extremely sad to have a season like this as its my last year before im off to college...

each year our family and another family hav gone up to june a week in february and sadly after this news we've had to cancel....and book lodging in snowbird

dusting of snow today. although not enough to save June from closing. :(

too bad. its such a great spot. The tree runs there are classic when they have enough snow. (also great to dodge MM lift lines on weekends)


Im gonna wash the Suby. Maybe then we will get a decent storm. ;)

Believe it or not, it was so bad thirty-one years ago that Snowbird & Alta closed after only a 2 month season in the '75-76 season.
According to a local meteorologist this is currently the 5th worst winter on record for LCC.

The rumors have been stirring for a while, but I was figuring they would have held out till after President's Day Weekend to see if things could turn around somewhat. Crazy to see them close so early, as a massive dump to redeem things in the Sierra is not unheard of and jeese its still not that late in the season. Kudos for honoring the June passes at Mammoth instead of 25% off next seasons pass or something like that. June is always in the shadows next to it's big brother, but thats what makes it what it is. Had some truly memorable days there the last 2 seasons.

Man that's unheard of... hopefully mammoth starts gettin more snow so u guys that live out there can redeem a partial season neway

Anyone have any clue how to power up a lift (other than with a pair of skins) in the event that there is the big dump we are waiting on?

June's closure announcement should now pave the way for record snow falls for their ski area for the month of February. Oh, the cruel irony of it all!:cussing:

This is so freaking sad. I'm going up to mammoth all of next week and wanted to hide out at june for the weekends. Sigh.

Umm yeah good luck with that :rolleyes: We have more coverage than Mammoth/June sounds like but it's still an ice skating rink out there, with lots and lots of rocks.

Super sad to hear about June, but sounds like a lot of it is because of loss of employees due to the snow situation - it's understandable.

I want to know if theres gonna be a big terrain park rumble at Mammoth now that the June locs will head over there.

Skinning up the cat track to hit the Face after a dump seems pretty easy. I've thought about this before, but only when the resort is actually open. I'm sure you could get your pass ripped for doing it when the mountain is in operation, bu now that it's closed, if it happens to dump, it may be a viable option.

Who the F is Rosenwald? I'm sure that you mean Rosenthal and sadly Walter was one the three patrolers that were KIA in the traggedy last April at the fumerole. Hopefully he is more that busy having fun digging snow test pits in the endless fields of pow pow up in heaven.

It's extremely sad to see my hometown mountain shut down for the season and it is taking a huge hit to the economy of the town. As you drive through town now, it feels like a complete ghost town.. All the employees are moving away, no cars on the streets.. It's completely dead..
The thing that's the most messed up about this deal is that the company gave the employees less than a 1 day notice that we'd be out of a job for the rest of the season.. We were really busy and open on saturday the 27th, when all of a sudden, employees were told, "we're closing tomorrow"
With less than a 1 day notice, employees had no choice but to pack up their bags and leave..
What's even more messed up about the situation is that we could have pulled through this dry spell.. If they were making snow for the runs covered in dirt patches, rather than making thousands of cubic inches of snow for the 1/2 pipe, we would have it made.. But as of now, a MASSIVE pile of snow sits in the halfpipe, while all of the snow on the runs is melting away into huge dirt patches..
What's most sad to me though, is it feels like the spirit of june mountain is gone.. It appears that all that matters to the company is the bottom line, and that anyone who could have made a difference doesn't even care..
