questions: roger's pass, four hours skinning on trekkers?

howdy. didn't know where to put this one so i'm putting it here. alright, some friends/family asked if i wanted to join them in revelstoke this xmas for a tour of rogers pass, a day or two, maybe four or five hours of skinning a day, mellow, low angle.. they're all experienced bc skiers but they don't get out much anymore so they're not in the greatest shape, all tele skiers, they mostly just like the fresh air. i've never skinned before, only bootpacked whistler slackcountry although i do own skins and can borrow trekkers.. would it be a bad idea to do this with alpine boots, lp's, p14's, and trekkers? or would it be better to rent some AT skis for the weekend?

If it's just low pace meadow skipping you'll survive. You'll get a hell of a work out and be tired, but survive.

There's a reason they're known as Alpine Tourwreckers. It's possible to do it on them, but I would recommend finding an AT set up, especially if the plan is to mostly be walking. Even if they're not in the greatest shape they probably will be smoking you on their tele set ups.

I'm sure you could do it pretty easily on trekkers, but renting an AT setup probably wouldn't be that much money for a couple of days. Might make the meadow skipping more enjoyable :biggrin:

yeah thats what it sounds like its going to be, so don't bother renting? as long as i can manage.. i don't mind a work out i just don't wanna ruin it for anyone.

I'd suggest just renting something from MEC in North Van. I think they have a three day rental deal.

You're going to go to Rogers Pass - the holy temple of backcountry skiing. Gnar lines all around you. And you're going to be on Trekkers? Or worst still - you're going to meadow-skip? Did I get that straight??

It's possible. I've been on trekkers with looks that long. And if there are gnar lines you'll have no AT binder worries.

Like the others said, if you can grab an AT setup somehow, do it. If not, you'll survive...don't forget a screw driver.

ok renting it is :) i won't be around vancouver around that time, anyone know of a good place to rent gear in vernon, kelowna or revelstoke?

Yes easily, it'll be fun*. I've done overnighters in Rogers on trekkers before. Good times at Rogers, hit up some of the stuff on the south side of the highway. Saphire col etc. are all sweet skiing.

*if you have a decent level of fitness

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to rent tele gear.

Telemarking is stupid, I know. But in this case it makes the best sense.

I don't get this. Yes, I'm basically a BC JONG but still, I don't understand why everybody has such a big problem with Trekkers. I've had no problems keeping up with people on "real" AT or tele gear.

My setup is Scratch BCs, Look P14, Trekkers

lp - foul ball (really freaking heavy @ 4.8lb each for the 186)
trekkers - strike three

thats like the anti-touring setup
go rent\borrow something with at bindings.

You haven't been to Rogers Pass have you? Longísh approaches. Lots of sidehilling to get to goods. Precisely where Trekkers are not good.

You'll be fine with trekkers. They're not that bad. Do bring a screwdriver and a roll of duct tape just in case, and you'll be fine.
Even if you're the slow one going up, you'll most likely be the fastest going down. (I'm pretty sure the going down part is why we do it.....unless you're a freak like iskibc or trackhead) ;)

I vote against the trekkers. Anything low angle or flat would suck ass on those as you're elevated and tilted. Like skinning with high heels.

Ive logged some serious vert on trekkers and I also own a an AT setup and here is my thought process. Climbing icy traverses and skiing mellow terrain- AT all the way, Little or no traversing but skiing the gnar- Trekkers baby. Trekkers suck for traversing, its a bit like hiking in high heals (I think) and its next to impossible to put pressure on an edge and kick turns get a bit akward. But AT bindings scare me in no fall zones. Have fun Rogers pass rocks!!!

For Rogers Pass, rent stuff.

I was in good shape, on sugar daddy's w/ fritschi's and alpine boots and was just wrecked at the end of every day. There aren't too many places in the US where you can tour that kind of vert. Its BIG, Yurp big.

Trekkers are ok, not great but passable for shorter tours. But 4000-5000vert up is a lot and that might be for only 1 run. To put it in perspective (albeit a little off, but close) Does skinning from the village to the top of Whistler sound like fun? How many runs of the Peak chair area you going to feel like making after that skin? If you want to make a couple of laps you are looking at a lot of skinning. You will be soooo stoked you rented gear. I can't even fathom touring there with your proposed setup. your body and your friends will thank you for renting. This is a no-brainer to me.

I did 5 laps of Grizzly shoulder one day - that was 3000 ft per lap. I still got passed by some local revy guy who did 7 that day. It was storming and pretty much closed out due to avalanche danger. Couldn't imagine doing that on trekkers.

Pretty much passed out in the hot tub when i got back to the Best West

Hey Grapedrink, your question is all wrong. First of all nix the trekkers. Second, why rent AT gear? Get your Visa card out and get set up. That way you'll have it forever more. You won't regret it.

Coquihalla was closed again last night. I spoke to GNP park hq (1-250-814-5232) and he basically said this:

- tons of wind. Couldn't see across parking lot yesterday
- tons of new snow
- not sure if Bostock/McGill will be open.

Might go to RPass next week instead of this weekend

I was at Rodgers last weekend and it was DEEP. Do not take trekkers up there, it will suck balls. By freerides, put them on your old skis and use them as preseason boards. Oh and make sure you ski Puff Daddy.

yah i know. Here's the thing. I can go next week when there's high pressure and I can wander into the alpine. why go now when for me , choices are so limited. I don't have to go to northern ontario for christmas

Oh well, would have been good to have you guys. I think we'll (or I'll at least) keep watching the weather. If that high pressure is going to show up saturday it will be good. If the storms keep pounding, I dunno.

I still think trekkers, and yes I've skied Rogers many a times.

oh yeah and is there a guide to the whole area? not just a map but like a backcountry guide to all the prominent lines and approaches? xmas gift kinda thing. ive found "Frontier Guide to the Incredible Rogers Pass" but i can't seem to find a description of it anywhere..

there is a really good guide book, called Ski touring in Rogers Pass or something like that. There is also a kick ass map. You can order either from http://friendsrevglacier.com/ or call the glacier circle book shop.

As for the trekkers, there are some long approaches and steep tracks up there. But I've seen people do pretty well on trekkers. It may not be the most fun way to get up but you can probably manage if thats all you've got.
