Michigan has always been Mideast to me.
You should recruit for the military
Or the military should have an easy time recruiting you...
I'm down like a clown for a summit at Swiss Valley. That weekend could be pretty sweet. The Schrab Brothers are going to be there The 20th & 21st There will be a nighttime exhibition with some good skiing going on, and then on Sunday there will be a Rail Jam / Slopestyle Contest, with prizes and whatnot.
I won't be there on the 2oth until later in the day as I will be up at Cannonsburg durning the day for the Juniors race, then back down to SV for the Late Afternoon evening.
We could have an afterparty at my cabin about 3 miles away from the ski hill.
Oh yeah, I'll get discount tickets for everyone who comes out for either day. Just PM or email me first.
Don't know how much after party I'll do. I'm going to be killing 2 birds with one stone. My church youth group will be skiing there that day. Don't know how many kids (other than mine) we'll have.
I'll be in Florida visiting my wifes family. Yippeee! At least I get to go bass fishing.
I'd be in but for an extra couple hours the other way I'm in Wyoming or Montana. I'd be willing to help put together a West/Mid-west Mini somewhere in Minnesota or Western WI. Or we could do this up at Bohemia and I would make that drive! I can think of a few Mags in the UP that might be able to help out and maybe TECH hockey tickets?
Good Luck,
Jay
I know I'm planning on going for a day either to Afton or Granite Peaks in January. Mt. Bohemia would be fun.
A buddy of mine has a very nice and expensive cabin rented for 2 nights over New Year's at Powderhorn, but is having a hard time getting six people ($100/person/night)to commit. If he can get more people to go I may actually be able to afford the trip. Between the Straightline Adventures trip and another one to Big Sky I'll be spending a lot of money on skiing trips.
There doesn't need to be an after party, just a suggestion. But this should be a cool day for your group since there will be a cool event going on both days that weekend.
As far as the midwest mini suggestion to have it in western Wisc or minnesota or Bohemia, we tried that last year and all interest died before it came to fruition.
The midwest is too big to get everyone together at one convenient area, I think there should be:
Midwest Southern Michigan Mini (for Illinois, Southern Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio & Michigan Maggs.) LOCATION: SWISS VALLEY
Midwest Northern Wisconsin, North Eastern Minnesota or UP Michigan (for Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota & Upper Michigan Maggs.) LOCATION: BOHEMIA, GRANITE PEAK or Someplace in MN
Mayebe even a Perfect North or Paoli to get the more southern states out.
If you hit Afton let me know. I'd be up for that. I have to do a quick serach but one of the mags works at Tech. Houghton for a base camp, non-skiers and family would be very happy with Ripley, and a few SUV's making the 30 minute trek to Bohemia would work great!
Good Luck,
Jay
Has there every been a Midwest Mini that involved more than 3 different people? Seems like an awful tough sell.
Bohemia is too far for me, and I don't find that either Welch or Afton are worth my time - way short - I just can't handle these two places. If someone put it together I might be game for something at Cascade, or Chestnut which are both quality resorts within a reasonable drive of population centers in Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota (sort of), and Iowa.
When I lived in the Cities I drove to Frontenac or Coffee Mill when they were open. Neat little places I'd be open to hitting again. Too bad Lutsen is about as far out of the way as Bohemia, it is also a quality place - with really scary and shity lifts.
Thats really the problem with a midwest mini. Its tough to drive much more than an hour past one hill with 450 vertical to get to another. I'm always up for throwing some beer soaked brats on my weber grill at Chestnut where I have my pass for an ultramini (any group larger than just my dog and I).
This hits the nail on the head with the midwest mini. The midwest is just waaaay to big to justify a large gathering at any one resort. Bohemia is sweet, but is also around 12 hours from me. So I most likely would plan to drive to Colorado another 4 hrs instead.
I think the Midwest Mini should be divided into sub regions of the midwest like I suggested above.
That being said, I could probobly make a mini at Chestnut, if one were to occur and I didn't have a kids race to work at.
Indy GS:
Since it's my local molehill, I'd be up for a Perfect North Mini. Can't think of anywhere to hang after, and the hill doesn't sell adult beverages either. That said, they've always let you bring your own food, and liquid refreshments (beer OK, if discrete about it).
Going a little further afield, 7Springs or Blue Knob, both PA could work, as well as Timberline/Canaan Valley in WV. I'm trying to take the family out to 7Springs on 26-29 of January, if that works for anyone.
Mt. La Crosse for southern WI skiing isn't bad. The bar is great and the snow making is pretty good.
lacrosse has great bars in general...I'm up for a Bohemia road trip from chciago this winter.
Yeah, that's what I thought the first couple years I lived there. I used to plan my week around the bar specials. After a couple of years it got old though.
Monday: $3 pitchers
Tuesday: 2 for 1 taps of Leinies and certain imports
Wednesday: 3 taps for $1
Thursday: $4 all you can drink domestic tap beer or $5 all you can drink rails.
Friday: $1 Jumbo taps
Saturday: Nothing good
Sunday: Quarter taps.
Well I already had you counted in for an ultra mini provided I soak the brats in the right kind beer

Here's the deal. Chestnut is 2.5 hours of Chicago where quite a few Mags reside, plus its a very nice ski area with an astounding snow making system (two huge pipes draw water directly from the mississippi feeding an unbelievable number of polecats) Two years ago when they had them all cranked up on the first cold night of the season they knocked out the power to the entire region. The place has some good sustained cruisers, 475 feet of vert, and some very respectable steeps that are perfect for lappage, a great retro bar and an extremely nice daylodge.
Some of the worlds most disgusting peeler joints are within a half hour.
If there is any interest in something bigger than an ultra mini as you would think would be possible with the large Chicago contingent, I'd be more than happy to supply the charcoal. Any of the weekends in January would seem attractive.
Otherwise, I'm just going to pencil in xboat, my dog summit, and a twelve pack of the proper beer.

keepin the 20th in mind though we usually drive the other direction for the free place at the mom'n law's B&B- if I somehow finangled a solo trip I'd have to hit up someone for some couch space as its 200mi from here...
may have couch/floorspace at the M'nL's B&B in cadillac for daytrip courduroy slayings at the 'fae or crystal etc... maybe I'll bump this thread on the wknd's we head up

They don't have any natural left, and they have yet to have an opportunity to run the guns. We're bummed about missing the weekend, but it's always up in the air at Turkey Day anyway. Glad they called it now, before I drove 5 hrs.
We'll be at the fae several times this year so we'll slay the 'roy together.

I'm not in a position to offer a lot of help, but I'd do what I could for a UP mini. I prolly won't be down for driving downstate or to WI for a mini, though... that just doesn't make any frickin sense.
You guys figure it out and tell me when and where to show up.
But I think an afterparty with the church group is a good idea.
oh yeah; summit forum bitches
I could be up for a western midwest mini. Either da UP or WI. Hell, I could possibly even force myself to an Afton Alps event, but that would be asking a lot. I just have a hard time trying to justify driving much more than 3 hours unless it's the UP.
Coming up soon, checking ths status from Indy GS bizzump.
I'd be there but will be in CO that weekend.
Bump
"Predicting" middle of next week vs. Mini next Saturday does not sound too promising...
Bumping to catch Indy's attention for the inside shiz...
Latest from the Swiss Valley page...
We made a significant amount of snow on Tuesday night and are hoping that we keep it through the week. We are looking forward to the colder temperatures that should be moving in early Sunday and staying through January. We plan to start the snow guns, which are still in place, as soon as the temperatures allow. If we get the weather they are currently predicting we may be open by the middle of next week! If we mother nature blesses us with enough natural snow we could be open by Monday or Tuesday.
Just to give you something to think about.
I left Chi-Town (north side) last Sunday at 7 am and was skiing by 10.

COMMENTS AND EVENTS
We expect to be back to 100% by the weekend.
I'd be down for the midwest mini, but I am also CO bound.
Further Chestnut banter:
I do like hitting the Broken Yolk cafe for breakfast on the way to the nut, though. Seem to only go there at the beginning of December.
(The date is the rate).
Bump back to the top.
SWISS VALLEY WILL BE OPEN FOR THE MINI JANUARY 20th. They have made alot of snow, and will fire back on either saturday or sunday night. They plan to run till they drain 3.3 million gallons of water. At the temps that are predicted sunday through wednesday night, things will be good. Hopefully they will be able to get some good features built up in the terrain park by the weekend.
Saturday the Schrab Brothers who have been featured in a few Warren Miller Movies will be out. They will do an exhibition and hold a comp. So come out and show your mad skillz.
Like I mentioned in the Summits thread, I'll be there later in the day, after my boy gets done racing up at cannonsburg.
