Things to be learnt from jibbers

Here's a few things that I learned about our sport on the lift with two 14 year old jibbers this week....

1. Our sport is now aparently called 'raging'.... "Yeah brah, I was raging earlier over on Styx....dude, that girl rages pretty hard...dude, where do you want to go rage now?" (attn KD, you guys now need to rename your magazine 'Powder: the ragers magazine'

2. Skis should be made without edges. "Dude, I hate it when you're like grinding a rail or like raging sideways and you catch your edge, they should seriously like take those things off."

3. Straight skis are the future of skiing. "Dude brah, I hate how like my skis are like fat at the tip. They just need to like make them straight so they don't look so gay. Dude and your tips (reffering to his friends Head Mad Trix) are like square. That's so fucking gay."

And all of this wisdom in just a 10 minute period.

God, please save our sport from itself again....:(

To each their own. Better to have them out there skiing than inside playing video games and watching HR puffnstuff.

wouldn't it be crazy if we went back to 7' edgeless wooden planks because jibbers thought they were cool to rage on?

It's fascinating what you can learn on a high-speed quad ain't it.

I¡¦ll be the lone ranger to contradict here. If we were to ¡§save our sport¡¨ from jibbers, skiing, once again, would become the fastest declining sport since aggressive inline. When I started skiing 7 years ago there were barely any youth skiing at all. Everyone snowboarded, except me. In 20 years there would have been few skiers left. But then jibbing happened and rejuvenated the sport and made it attractive to youngens. Thus creating a new group of life long skiers to pass on skiing to their kids. Jibbers aren¡¦t all that bad.. A few examples

1: You don¡¦t have to look gay to ski. I¡¦m not saying to dress like a snowboarder, or go out and buy the baggiest cloths you can find, but the 80¡¦s!? COME ON! I¡¦m ashamed of skiing during the 80¡¦s/early 90¡¦s. The clothing was so bad I don¡¦t know, I just don¡¦t know. Not to say I don¡¦t have any history, Schmidt, Plake, Hatrip, and Stump are defiantly ¡§the man¡¨ and we wouldn¡¦t be anywhere near where we are today without them.

2: Most jibbers are older kids like me (19) who grew up skiing with their parents and became very proficient skiers at a young age. When they got bored, instead of switching to snowboarding, they started catching air on their skis, thus improving their balance and confidence in new scary situations. Most jibbers, contrary to popular belief are very good skiers. Are Tanner, Olsson, Auclair, and Duglas better skiers than Harrison, Law, Mch, and Krietler? No, but I bet they can ski your ass into the ground, and mine.

3: Skis should have edges, you just rode with losers. Can¡¦t ski pipe without edges ƒº You shouldn¡¦t be hooking edges on rails unless you have no idea what you are doing.

4: Jibber understand fatter is better, just look at all the new skis. Next year my jib sticks will be 90mm in the waist.

5: You know you like it when someone busts any trick off a cliff, period.

6: I can pull a switch 540, can you? :D

Don¡¦t completely hate jibbing/jibbers until you try it and ski with some older= >16yrs people who do it. I know I have no real point, but don¡¦t all those words with the numbers look nice?

Guess what man, I'm only 21 and I ski with kids who ride park and stuff too. I already own a pair of 90mm Jib sticks (Scratch BC's). You obviously missed the point of my post. I wasn't saying that all jibbers are mindless morons like these two kids were, but just making fun of the ones who are. I do think that our sport needs some saving though. It needs to come back into focus. Too many kids are focusing on tricks and shit and not taking the time to actually ski. Yeah, I can ride some park, but I can also ski a 45 degree slope, throw down a race carve and hit the bumps as well. All I'm trying to say is that there is a lot less younger kids actually ripping the steeps anymore. Most of them are being parkrats and doing nothing but jibbing. Yes, I think that jibbing did pull us out of the 90's period, but it was all done by guys like JP Auclair, Shane Szocs, Mike Douglas that can actually rip big stuff and are now bringing it to the big mountains, which I think is cool and necessary for progression.

I find it odd that there's a few of you with such disdain for jibbing. Jibbing is the forefront of progression of the sport of skiing. You can mock the jibbers all you want, but every late teenager talks like that. Jibbers have done wonders for the sport. They progress things and are not snowboarding!

And yes, I sanded the crap out of my Enemys to get rid of the edge. It's much easier to land a bit off balance and rail slide if you get rid of the edges.

Why does it matter how they approach a table when throwing down a dialed air? I'm not sure If I understand your gripe. I honestly don't see much wrong with this stance when hitting jumps. Guys that started this funky stance can clearly ski outside of the park. Check out Sessions 1242.

you are a dolt for sanding your edges. why don't you guys save yourself some cash in the long run and buy some rollerblades. no poles too! way easier.

approaching a jump like a retarded monkey furthers the argument that jibbers don't really want to be skiing. if you are only concerned with what you do in the air and on the rail to the extent that you go out of your way to make your skis useless otherwise and don't care that you look like a gaper on rentals when your skis are actually in contact with the snow, you should sell your shit, drive south, buy some rollerblades and hang out in a skate park. no lift tickets to buy and no snow to get you all wet and stuff. lookout for the skaters though, they love to beat up fruitbooters!

Maybe I can help you understand--two guys I'm watching get off a few chairs ahead of me last week, jizz rags flapping out, immediately drop down into 'monkey-see' pose as they start heading down.

Now that the jibbers have 'saved skiing', who's going to save us from them?

And yeah, sanding down your edges is retarded. If you can't turn, you can't ski.

Of course sanding edges is dumb. But, next time your up by the terrain park take a look at the conditions. When a powder day comes around, all the guys you see in the park will be out ripping the steeps. I was at squaw last spring when there was hardly any snow at all and the park was packed with kids throwing crazy tricks. In the next two days it snowed 3 and a half feet. I saw the same kids, many even on the same skis tearing it up on the slopes. Not only were they hucking huge cliffs, but they were making the most difficult lines look smoothe. Most of those kids are locals and can really rip. Also, does it really matter how you aproach a jump? It may not technically be good skiing, but the park is more about syle then good skiing. And from what i've seen most good park skiers are very technical when skiing the steeps. Maybe late season squaw is an exception, but I was impressed.

i agree - it is real cool to see folks dominate everywhere. most people have one pair of skis - if you are sanding your edges so they won't snag on a rail or lip, it is going to be pretty tough to ski anything else.

maybe that is why you saw all the park rats out on the rest of the hill on powder days - cause they sanded the edges off their sticks and they're only good for rails and powder. ;)
