I spent the month of August 2006 in Bariloche Argentina backcountry skiing. It was an awesome trip and I encourage anyone who has thought of doing something similar to go!

Did you have any problems with permits and park wardens?
Nice stuff. Good to see the Andes were serving it up for you! Also, stoked to see good tree skiing. In our part of the Andes, there aren't any so storm days pretty much mean catching up on sleep or reading alot.

scottishskier: we didn't have any problems with permits or rangers. At lanin park you have to register and they check to make sure you have all the proper equipment. basically you need to have all the basic backcountry skiing safety gear as well as a helmet and an axe. the one thing that may catch you off guard is that they expect you to have a programmable vhf radio to call them if you need help.

Matosan, absolutely killer beta and awesome pics. I've been to SA three times now, and Bariloche is my place of choice as well. However, I've never gotten the chance to explore the way you did here, and I am super grateful for the write-up. I plan to return to Bariloche for a week or two each year for a while, and this stuff is pure gold for me. Looks like a hell of a lot of fun, and some pals and I have been talking about SA volcanos for a while. So, thanks again.
A couple questions - 1) your write up suggests this was August I think? When did you arrive, and when did you leave? Trying to get a judge of conditions relative to timing. The last time I was there Lopez for instance was taunting me, but I thought the road in was still shut down low. Did you hike in all the way, and when was that? Similar questions for the low tree skiing - everytime I've been, anything in the trees was pretty well mush/rain/wet/glop... Was that early Aug? And 2) Did you have any hassles going back and forth across the Chilean/Argentinian border? Specifically, did you ever do an Arg to Chile and back in a day, and did the border guards give you any grief if so?
BTW, Chillan is a relatively easy skin off the top of the Termas lifts. You'd have no problem. Somewhere I have pics of that if you want.
When I was in Bariloche last week of August / first week of September, conditions were springlike for sure, but still plenty of base. However, not long before I arrived there had been a lot of snow in the area. The weather is very unpredictable, so it is hard to know what conditions will be like at a given time.
Yah, I know, and agree, but it would still help to get some vague dates for each of those reports so I can have some judge of relative conditions, and then scale up or down depending on whether it's a good or bad season, or if there's been a recent storm or not.
We've always gone late Aug to early Sep as well; I'm just wondering roughly how much earlier you'd have to go to have late winter conditions instead of spring conditions, and when spring touring access really opens up/etc...
Those trip reports are stellar. After viewing them sequentially, this pic seemed so appropriate. Bariloche mission accomplished ... heading back to the car.

Thanks for the compliments! I put dates on my trip reports so you can see when I was there. I think I got lucky to get the spring snowpack in august. Many people said that august this year was like september. Both times I went to lopez we hiked up from teh main road at the bottom. It was heavy trailbreaking during the storm and the snow was a bit heavy but it was a fun day. The second trip to lopez was great spring conditions and again we hiked up from the bottom, but this time along the trail.Quote:
