i thought we all knew this. or, at least, everyone not in the east.
I saw a bunch of different explanations, but I haven't seen this one on the board yet.
Is everyone not in the east watching Taxi Driver a lot?
I was always under the impression that "Nickel" was a derivative of this story.

I always thought it was derived from everybody chiming in with their two cents, and the way terms like that get twisted around in these places. Then again, I got hooked on these boards right before the first Utah summit so I came late to the game.

There should be no greeting. Nothing good can come from internet frineds meeting in reality. I though this was common knowledge.

I hadn't realized "change for a nickle" was used in Taxi Driver, but I do remember when the creating was coined (bad pun, I know). Someone wanted a way to recognize other board members (I'm not sure we were maggots at the time) on the slopes. A couple of suggestions were made (duct tape on the tips, etc), but everyone wanted something so bizzare that they would never accidentally mix up a maggot with a gaper. Change for a nickle was so weird that it was selected as the greeting/code phrase.
It's a futuristic term 'coined' by the Cheney Administration. It will be a symbolic greeting used by the upper class to distinguish themselves from the rest of Americans after the rest of the world bans together to make the US pay off Bush's multi-trillion dollar debt. You thought he was done with Uncle Sam's credit card?

No, I remember when whoever it was suggested the line that it had been lifted from some Jackson guys, but it still seems that the real origin is the Bobby D. movie, which is something I'd never heard around here.
