I'm interested in this Glen Plake person you speak of and would like more information. He's kind of funny looking.Quote:

He was still ripping the shit out of Mammoth last July!
I met Glen Plake in a McDonalds Parking Lot once back in 92' or 93'. I thought it was really rad, and made me think my K2 Extremes were all that much cooler. Then I had lunch.
Edit: I suck at the interweb. and screwed up the image links, nevermind.
He's shorter than he looks.Quote:

Couple years bumped into him at Kirkwood's closing weekend after a 3-5ft dump. He and his crew were making the rounds, flipping off the wall, heart chute, the normal spots...
Didn't he brake his tib or fib in heart quite a few years back?
Anyway, timeless.. Still rips on big sticks...
Fargo funny looking??Quote:

Hooker No. 1: Well, the little guy was kinda funny-lookin'.
Marge Gunderson: In what way?
Hooker No. 1: I dunno, just funny-lookin'.
Marge Gunderson: Can you be any more specific?
Hooker No. 1: I couldn't really say. He wasn't circumcised.
Marge Gunderson: Was he funny lookin' apart from that?
Hooker No. 1: Yah...
Marge Gunderson: So, you were havin' sex with the little fellow then.
Hooker No. 1: Uh huh...
That's quite true. He's the juxtopositional opposite of MD9 - Plake's about a foot shorter then you'd guess, MD9's a foot taller then you'd guess.Quote:

Yes,he did break his leg in the heart back in the day.One of my buddies who was on patrol at the time hauled him out. I wonder if glen knows he was on LSD at the time? Ahh,the crazy years.
Believe it. I met him.
Plake is DA MAN. You have to have respect for this guy. He is one of the forefathers of extreme skiing. He was out there tearing it up when a lot of you were in diapers. And he's still out there ripping shit up--straightlining the Palisades at Squaw, hucking his carcass off big cliffs, shredding VW-sized ice bumps down the face at Heavenly on 220s.
On top of that, Glen is a real class act--humble, friendly, and appreciative of his fans. I met him once when he was signing autographs at a Warren Miller showing. He spent at least a full minute (or several) chatting with people that wanted to talk to him.
RESPECT!
Here's some pics from the opening scene of "License to Thrill." (If you haven't seen it, or "Blizzard of Ahhhhs", get to the video store now. These flicks are mandatory viewing and will get you super-stoked to go hit the gnar.)
Glen: "I didn't have my 225's on here or I woulda stuck this...but it sure looked good on film! ahhaha!!"

"Notice the back handspring over the crevasse..."
"I had too short of a ski for this particular trick, and when I landed the speed was too great...and I just blew up."
"Nah, I've been doin' the weird stuff the whole time, Ehheheheheheh"
this thread not complete until someone posts a frame grab from the pinpin video where he sprays water out of his ass.......
total class act

First of all, Silentstorm, that's an awesome post for post #13!!! I used to own that version of License until some asshat taped over it.
I also met Glen, in the fall of 1996 at a ski shop in Reno. I was working for Squaw's marketing office, he was there representing Mammoth and badmouthing Squaw. It was pretty funny. There I was trying to promote Squaw and he was right next to me laughing about how much SVSC blows.
That was so cool.
And here's a shot of a friend of mine who bumped into Glen on his way to Chamonix a few weeks ago.
Actually his femur. There is an x-ray up in Bub's Sports bar.Quote:

Met him this February in Chamonix while we were waiting at the train station in town - he's such a laid back, normal guy. He started up a conversation with us and as we got to talking, he says: "wait, were you the guys yo-yoing the Glacier de la Vierge yesterday on tele gear?" We replied yes and he just goes "cooooool...I watched you for a while yesterday".
I know I'm lame, but a legend like him saying that to me...pretty much the highlight of my ski season...

What would you change about skiing?
Plake, would make it just like before snowboards came around.
Met Plake at Mammoth a few years ago on a stormy Tuesday powder day at 3:40 in the afternoon. He skied up as I awaited the swing of the chair. I rode 2 chairs up with him and he talked about skiing in Verbier with Doug Coombs for Warren Miller (didn't ever mention Seth or Szocs). Wanted to do another down-home-style Hot Dog tour again for a corporate ski owner (AS Resorts?). Said he lived near Lake Lahontan still. Talked about the new fat K2 prototypes he was given to try, and had on his feet. Laid-back, down-to-earth, blue hair, and wearing old-school, black leather ski garb. Skied Gravy Chute and baby Gravy with him, and he straightlined/mached thru both...Last Fourth-of-July, stood behind him at McCoy Station in line for the Gondola as someone threw snowballs at him from behind. He kept looking for the perpetrator but didn't say anything. Then I saw him just rip the bumps down Climax, in full Mohawk-mode. Maybe he's a "sell-out" to some out there, but he is still as core as anyone I'd think...
Glen, a sell out, how is that???Quote:
