I am so sad right now. the worst part about it is i didnt even do it skiing. but longboarding to class. It really really hurts and i am so upset. i dont know when i will be able to ski and huck again.
i was too out of it at the er to ask too many questions. they just gave me a sling and the number of a do to see in a week. has anyone else broken theres? how long until you could be active again? how long till you can friggen lay down by yourself again?

My friends break them on a regular basis. Depending on how you break it, it can be like a month or two. The sling is really just for comfort, from what both their doc's told them, so if are comfortable not wearing then don't worry about it.
The real trick is waiting until your strong enough to ski again. Friend number 1 broke his doing a back flip, waited like 6 weeks and then broke it his first day back on snow. Friend number 2, broke his waited like 2 weeks before goingback on snow and luckily hasn't taken any spills and is probably at like 90% now.
Finelines, so sorry to hear. That super sucks. I've never broken mine, but being a mtn bike racer too it's a pretty common injury among my friends. Like dirtybrian says, yeah definitely wait for it to heal before you huck too much again b/c you don't want to break it. The standard is 6-8 weeks. I'd wait a bit longer to really huck things unless you know you're going to stomp it. Unfortunately, if your collar bone break is bad, they may choose to put a metal rod in it... one of my friends had that done after crashing on his downhill bike. That of course takes longer to heal. Also, if you reinjur it, it may be that you have to have the metal rod surgery anyway.
The key is to let it heal before doing serious things again. But, if it were me, I'd still be skiing, even with the sling on :) Good luck to ya. Let us know what the real doc says.

broke mine a few years ago the week before my wedding. fell off a 2nd story balcony. the first week for me really sucked. pain meds weren't agreeing with me and my back felt all screwed up probably due to the fall and the fact that my arm was always tensed up in the same position. in and out of bed was a chore. anyway, after about a week, things improved dramatically. beers the following weekend actually helped my back muscles relax. it was about two months before ski season and i was pretty much good to go by the start. (minor pole planting pain at first) make sure you wear thatt sling if they tell you too or your bone heals a little funny. also, once you can start rehab, obviously stick with it. the pool works good if you have access. good luck.

I broke mine and 5 ribs from a big mountain biking fall. Smashed into a mud bank at 30 mph while rotating upside down. i think i got lucky.
it hurt like shit at first but after the first hour i was ok. It was a clean break, not compund / through the skin. It was clean through right in the middle. Doctors did a few tests to see if i had any issues, gave me a sling and some meds and said 'bye , try not to ride your bike for a few weeks...'.
Bonus is that you are wounded man now and chicks dig it. i scored on the same evening ..... painful and fun at the same time.
Sleeping. i slept slightly upright with lots of cushions for the 1st couple of weeks. Makes life easier. i only ever took 3 meds before saying no to the rest. Your body can cope without pain meds if you let it.
Took about 3 weeks to then get rid of the sling,Then had to be careful not to jar it too badly. You know when you're pushing it close to breaking as the pain builds up fast.
6 weeks and i was right as rain, left the biking til the next seson to let it repair fully.
i started doing very small weights after 3 weeks to keep the shoulder/ arm working and functioning. helps with the repair as long as not too heavy. Start with 5Kgs and work up depending on pain from bone. Don't push it in any way, maybe even start with a tin of beans or something.
i did mine in july and was skiing the following january.I took a big fall and it survived even though i broke one of my ribs again.
Rest it as much as possible, don't push it too early. Let it heal. It'll heal big and then the bone startes to shape itself back a little after 12 months. i still have a lump, i have to be careful to test backpacks for comfort more but i don't even think about it now.
I feel for you..my collarbone popped outa the skin, I remember it being super painful and sleeping was a bitch...8 weeks at least. I tried to come out early and broke it again slipping on the ice...take it easy!!!
That's a total drag. I broke mine hitting the deck with my road bike. The first week totally sucked. The meds were great for getting sleep but ripped my stomach up. After a couple weeks, it started feeling better, but even going for a hike I could really feel it. Good luck.

I've never done that, but I've had a few friends break collarbones. Healing seems to depend on where the break is - one of them needed surgery, but the others just healed on their own.
so i was doing allright today until i was adjusting the sling and the bones moved. they slipped around and popped/ground. it was pretty much excruciating. and i am miserable and just in a cold sweat right now. cant breathe deeply, cant do anything. painkillers arent doing shit.

Heal up soon, eh? Be nice to it, do what the docs say, try to eat and sleep well if possible, and give the body a chance to recover.
Stick it out, you'll be back on the hill (er, in the air) before you know it.
PM Meatdrink, a fellow huckstar for you. I believe he broke his right around this time last year on a groomer, and still was able to go to AK in April or so...

Most clavicle fractures will heal up just fine in the standard 4-6 weeks. The pain should begin to subside in another couple days.
There have been studies done on sling vs. figure 8 brace and they come out equal as far a healing time/ quality goes.
In the mean time find something else to keep your mind occupied, knitting seems to be all the rage these days with the kids.
If you decide to take up knitting, I'll take a hat.
thanks guys... last night sucked, i have really got to figure out this painkiller issue. :( i learned how to crochet over my knee sugery last year. once my left arm is mobile again, ill get started vinman. ;)
Damn fineline, so sorry to hear that! I agree it's pretty damn painful, but within 6-8 weeks I think you can be back out there 100% . . . but the first couple of weeks really do suck, no doubt.
I broke mine a while back while skiing. Mine took longer than normal (according to info. I had at the time) to heal, but I don't have the unsightly bump or dent that often accompanies a clavicle break.
The excruciating pain lasted for about three days. Part of the reason is that I was sleeping on a waterbed at the time. Any slight movement rocked the bed which in return moved my shoulder. Damn that hurt. I was given Percocet for the pain, but that didn't do shit for me. My mother, who is in the medical field, gave me Tylenol with codene and that worked great.
After around three days the pain lessened quite a bit. The next few weeks were really only painfull if I moved wrong or bumped my shoulder. I had a hard time with the brace they had me wear. My college roommates referred to it as the bra because it went over both shoulders and was a pain in the ass to remove by my self until the pain went away.
After week 4 or so the pain was basically gone and I had almost full range of motion back. To this day I don't have 100 percent full range motion, but it is very close.
I went in for my 6 week check up the doctor asked to move my arms and asked about pain. Since the pain was gone he said I was healed. I insisted he actually look at the shoulder, which he finally agreed and found that he could still move the bone. It was still broke.
I was supposed to see an othopedic doc. in three weeks to see if it was healed or the said surgery may be discussed. Since there was not pain I never went back and the bone eventually healed on its own.

didnt pay too much attention to that brace after the 1st week ( it was such a pain in the ass)
now i have a peach-pit size bump where the bone healed.
I could care less, but i know some gals that do.

I separated my shoulder and know a bit of your pain. Can't wait to see your pics when you are out and about 100% again.

Broke mine two years ago while skiing and landing hard on the shoulder.
What they did to me was they additionally taped the shoulder top right at the spot where it broke to prevent displacement. I strongly recommend asking your medical service for such. The sling pretty much doesn't do anything but if you feel more comfortable with it wear it.
Some painkillers for a couple of nights and resting on the sane side is all it takes. It took me 6 weeks to recover but count on 8 weeks to get back to some strength.
Until then better be careful with any stupid stuff.
Sorry to hear that! I did mine too a few years back. Wore a figure 8 and it took about 8 weeks to heal. First few days were really painfull but after about a week it felt fine.
Broke mine biking a few years ago. That was much more painful than knee surgery.
I wore the brace for a good 4-6 weeks, that made my bump not as big as many others i've seen. I couldn't do much for a couple weeks, but after that I was good to go. I swear that brace and just resting made it heal faster and better.

I do not advocate any of the above as he was quite extrordinary. But that should help you to know that with proper rehab and a positive outlook you will be back in no time.
So now, a week later its feeling a bit better thankfully. It still kind of shifts around but doesn't hurt as bad. I am going to see the doc on monday, I was told there is a chance I might need surgery, but if that is a quick rehab then I am all for it. I wanna do the kirkwood comp soooo bad, but I dont know if that is realistic. The bone is portruding quite a bit however, is that normal? Its like, sticking straight up.. heh, not too comfortable.

Hang in there, amiga. Having tons of experience with pain killers, all that I can tell you is that they're not always helpful. Losing sleep or being edgy and what not can sometimes be more harmful than good. Try going without if you can and save them for future hangovers when they're really needed. Best of luck. :yourock:
As far as the bone appearing to stick strait up, some angulation of the fracture is normal and you will continue to feel things shift for a bit longer. If the angulation is very bad, then maybe they would consider surgery, but my guess is that eve thgou it feels to you like it sticks strait up, in reality it probably is not quite that bad if viewed from the x-ray.Quote:
