BECAUSE NBC SUCKS DONKEY BALLS AND WONT SHOW ANYTHING ELSE
C'mon, you know you love the drama...
Seconded. I'd rather watch the cross country skiers than figure skating.
hey whats that sport called where they cross country and shoot at targets? That's a cool sport.
Cause women watch teh Olympics more than men?
It's not skiing, but I'd rather watch figure skating than luge, which was on earlier. So I'm a chick...
Biatholon and the 20k was live last nighht and I watched it, it was AWESOME as was the nordic combined today. Cross country skiing is hella fun to watch, especially mass starts. Figure skating takes so fucking long and they have a stupid story and commercials between each skate. That being said the thrown tripple in pairs was pretty sick she should start skiing.Quote:

Events like luge don't show well on TV.
I prefer to watch timed skiing events and hockey events. I'm not crazy about sports like figure skating because the scoring is so subjective.
I am not a big figure skating person - as most guys go - but you have to love the 18-25 year-old girls wearing the oh so tight leotards spinning arround skating butt first into the camera.
It's an incredibly boring sport otherwise, and I have no idea why it's so popular.

Science has proved this.
I've got to agree with it's the scantily clad female athletes .

Some of the better figure skating tickets were going for $1500 and up once the games started. On the other hand, we ended up selling some of our X-country tickets for $8.
And if any of you happen to be at the Olympics now, or are planning on going in the future, the best thing to see live is ski jumping. We had to get up at the butt crack of dawn to catch the bus to the venue, and then ended up standing around in the 15 degree temps, in the shade for a couple of hours, but it was awesome. The TV does not do it justice.
The bobsled/luge on the other hand, worse in person than on TV. The only cool thing about it was that they're so damned fast. It seems like they're going about 10 times faster in person than they look on TV. Of course, that means that you stand around for 10 minutes waiting to see a blur go by at 70mph in a fraction of a second, then stand around waiting for the next athlete.
Front page of today's Los Angeles Times is a huge article on how snowboarding has become the most sought-after ticket, the most watched sport on TV, and has emerged as THE event at this year's Olympics.
The majority of women aren't interested in competitive sports, but they like things that are pretty. Figure skating is pretty. There are more women than men. Figure skating isn't attractive to most women because of the competition, but because it's pretty.
The competition aspect is there so men can have some slim reminder of war while enduring the prettieness. Men endure the prettieness because their underlying sex drive tells them this is a neccessary concession to reach the goal of sex, and and they desire to avoid the sharp tongues women wield when they don't get their prettieness.
There you have it. Rasputin has spoken.

What if you were a little Soviet kid skating around, playing hockey with your friends and some guy from the national sports complex came around and told your parents that you were going to ice dancing academy?
Imagine the hell?
Imagine puberty in Ice Dancing academy?
It's one thing to be Brian Boitanao, but I think those CCCP guys were probably not all that fruity.
Oh yeah, and Americans are the morons that the networks make them, because they are morons and they watch what the networks put on TV, which makes them more moronic.
What can I say? Lotsa people like stuff that sucks.
I can't help but think it's related to the reason Wal Mart is a popular store.
Well, watch the ice dancing competition because Tanith Belbin is pretty smokin'.Quote:

Gotta wonder how many people watch figure skating just so they can say "I saw that!" when the next judging scandal breaks out.
Ohh, speaking of, did anyone else find it really funny that a judge from the International Skating Whatever took that "integrity in judging" pledge during the opening ceremonies? Isn't that like having Bill Clinton take an oath of celibacy?
Oh, Benny! Sasha Cohen is damn near freakish. I guess she's an adult, but she sure doesn't look like one.Quote:

I don't have a problem with the inclusion of judged sports in the Olympics but I certainly don't care for them too much b/c of the rigid perfectionism and the robotic standards for performance.
Half-pipe = figure skating with snowboreds.
On the subject of robotic performances, that's why White always wears that stupid bandana is so you can't see the circuitry if he wrecks. :D ;)
Those girls are every bit as athletic as Bode Miller. What they can do is amazing.
I don't get the hate - people like skating better because they don't ski like we do. They look for a combination of strength, beauty and grace vs. Speed, agility, and instinct.
Now Men's skating is creepy, but I'll watch the chicas and the pairs every time. Did you see that American couple pull off the first thrown Triple Axel ever? That woman got LAUNCHED and nailed it. You gotta give props where they're due.
I've come up with a great replacement for some of these shitty subjective events.
They ought to send the skaters down the bob run armed with a rifle. At various points on the circuit a target pops up and they have to plug it. They have to wear helmet cameras too.
Perhaps they could put a lion or something in there to liven things up too.
did they have to rock her back and forth to break the suction?Quote:

1. on board cameras
2. real time counters against the leader (shown always as a function of +/-)
3. announcing by Darrel (sp?) Waltrip: giggity giggity giggity!
Actually, IMVHO a helmet cam and the GPS necklace deal should be mounted on every competitor for the gravity events
I'm pretty sure we already have this, at least on CBC up here in Canada. Women's luge is on right now, and at various points along the course the +/- pops up, along with projected ranking. It definately makes it interesting.Quote:

On board cameras would be cool. Extra cool for the figure skaters! (Just to watch them skate with big-ass helmets on would be entertaining enough!)
I've repeatedly declared that there's no way in hell I'll even get on the back of a tandem bike, let alone let someone throw me in a spiral up in the air so I can try to land on ice on one leg. Yikes - just the trust factor is impressive.Quote:

Shaggy- Those sound just like split times, I'm talking about realtime differences a la NASCAR where the counter is always on and always showing you the +/- every foot of the course.
altagirl: ??? Wrong with sasha cohen? Not much apparently.
The AD said she's freakish (higher up on this page), and someone else was bitching about her in another thread... Some picky-ass people around here.Quote:

edit: about Sasha Cohen being "freakish." Well, yeah, the flexibility is a little freakish, but I'm mainly talking about her body. She's 21 but has the body of an 11 year old.
Bobsled/Skeleton: Americans want to know how fast! Screw the times! I want a MPH readout and a headcam!!!!!!!!
I love Roo's idea... but one up... wider track and a U... drop the athlete on one side of the U, the lion in on the other... and crossbows instead of .22s.. and a mace!

WHY IS FIGURE SKATING POPULAR?

MEN GET TO STARE AT THIS ON TV IN THE NAME OF THE OLYMPICS WITHOUT THE DIRTY LOOKS THEY GET FROM THEIR WIVES AND GIRLFRIENDS FOR STARING AT CHEERLEADERS DURING A FOOTBALL GAME (and the cheerleaders dress more modestly all things being relative)
And the women get to watch and dream of being that sexy, famous, and graceful.
