Just taking a peek at UBC Vancouver, as the Uni I'm thinking of going to is part of 'Universitas 21' which includes UBC in the group, and means you can do exchanges between (with credit transfer).
Anywho, just was wondering what the ski scene was like there, what skiing can get done, etc. (Guessing Whistler is hit often?)

I guess UBC is more like Yale than Princeton then huh? I doubt the goods are in BC, but I could be mistaken.
UBC is in a great location of Vancouver. Within a couple hours to Whistler and Baker, lots of backcountry gnar. Currently the is a crew of maggots at UBC that can tell more about the school. There was a thread here with the Vancouver mags. It's a kick ass city if you happen to mtb also. You can put your bike on the city bus and catch a ride to the north shore.
I wish I had done my undergrad at UBC instead of here in Ontario. You can't go wrong going there in my opinion.

I can't remember exactly, but they offer a ridiculous season pass offer to Whistler. Like $350CAD or something. Beats the $75/day, someone on here should know.... Whistler does have some sweet terrain to deserve it's rep, and there's some nice touring north of there.

CyberCop: you're asbolutely right, there's nothing in BC at all, which means it's your dream destination, since there's no danger of you having to sack up and actually ski or anything.

more well established UBC mags such as atrain, samwich, postman all headed to the red mountain comp last night I believe, but I think they will agree with me that you have plenty of opportunity to ski if you come here.
basically equal distance to whistler and mt baker (about 2 hours), more people go to whistler because its cheaper, but I, and others definitely head to baker also when you don't feel like dealing with crowds, or the snow is better. Theres also the north shore if you feel like night skiing on crappy snow
There seems to be a pretty good network of people who are driving up there from UBC, so once you have contacts with people you can pretty much always find a ride, and by being on this board, you already do. theres also the greyhound as a last resort which I think is 25 dollars
I came to ubc on an exchange program a few years ago, and liked it enough that I decided to go full time, so in summary - do it

UBC Ski Lodge if you have a car to get there. There's also 3 local hills (Cypress, Grouse, and Seymour) which offer night skiing even when it's raining.
oh yah one other thing, you have to be 25 or younger to get the cheap whistler pass (they call it a 4by4 pass for some reason) I don't know how old you are, but something to keep in mind.
If you get the 4x4 pass you're also eligible for the grad pass the year after, at about $700 it's still a pretty sweet deal compared to early bird or full price.Quote:

camp ubc is a blast.
and a cheap whistler ticket is freaking amazing.
I don't have a vehicle, but it has been no poblem finding rides up to the hill 2-3 days a week.
Also the mountain biking is key. I know this is a ski forum, but I came to ubc for the north shore mountain biking. another plus to beautiful vancouver.
you won't regret coming here at all.
Every day I attempt to kick myself in the ass for choosing UVic over UBC. Because of this decision I spend approx 12 hrs/week in my car and on ferries commuting to whistler from friday-sunday. The only thing that makes UVic better is the mountain biking and surfing nearby, the bunnies and the parties.
Do it for sure. You might find it hard to go home though. Fortunately as a Brit, you're eligable for a working holiday visa, so you'll be able to fit in at least another year.Quote:

Do it, you wont regret it....tonnes of good skiing nearby. Or, come down here to the uofc (calgary) and you'll be close to a fair bit of good skiing too. Either one works.
I'm thinking about going to UBC next year. Either UBC or Ontario (Western, Queens, etc.). I'm probably going to take Mech. Eng. The choice between the two places basicly comes down to between swimming for a varsity team next year (in Ontario, I'm not good enough for UBC- they've been 1st in Canada for 8 years straight), or skiing and biking. Right now I'm leaning to skiing and ripping the Shore.
Any advice on squeezing the most days out of whistler while staying in school? I heard some about arranging classes so you get a friday or midweek day off. Anything else?
Is there any backcountry that is close-ish to van. like off of grouse/ seymore/ cyprus?
How accessable is mountain biking from the campus, can you get to the "Shore" with public transit?
You can definitely put your bike on the front of a bus and get to lots of places on the North Shore to mtb. Takes around an hour to get to most spots, maybe a bit more depending on where you're going.
SFU has a decent engineering program but I don't know if they have Mech. Engineering has a pretty full schedule. If you were in Arts you could arrange a 3 day week.Quote:

I've spent time at both schools but ended up heading inland because I dislike crowds of asian people exceeding 100% in all the courses I take. And to escape busy ski hills. and because I'm a redneck.
Went on their site, don't think they have mechanical. They are more focused on electonics it looks like. Arts not really an option (dont have the interest and the parents would kill me for skiing more than schooling), but i think i saw in another thread that there were guys on here who managed to get out of class on thursdays or something and they were taking engineering.Quote:

They care about grade point averages so if you're above some threshold you're golden. If you're out-of-country you pay a lot more so they want you more. The registrar should be able to tell you the approximate number.

im a 4th year student year. ski about 50-70 times a year at whistler and still go to all my classes
anyway its a really good school with a great reputation has some of the best mountain biking and skiing and is a few hours drive away from surfing
wish i was 18 again and could do it all over
im jealous
if i were you i wouldnt even go to the uk just come to school out here
