anyone going tomorrow?
I'm going at midnight tonight, not by choice. Going to a midnight showing of a 3:40 hour movie is not ideal. Damn friends!
hahahaha, I am going to the midnight showing after beers with snowfire, and then I am taking a final at 7:30 tommorow morning, isn't life grand? OH yeah, and I am skiing tommorow afternoon, yes.
going to 12:30 showing tonight, by choice!

Gunna go tonight, getting a good 4 hours of sleep before classes.
Missed getting tickets for tonight, seeing it tomorrow after skiing.
Yep. I got my tickets for the showing at St Adele. If you all ever get the chance I suggest reading all of the books. Even the history volumns. "History of Middle Earth: Book of lost tales I, II".
Really gets into the nuts and bolts of JRR's thought process in the creation of his charactors. His used lots of Old Testiment struction to frame his charactors.

The religion department at my school offered a course on on the LOTR trilogy. It was sort of a study of the similarities between JRR's characters and Biblical figures. Never took the course because of my total lack of interest in Fantasy type books but sounds interesting anyway.

Took me three months in Norway to read the book. Sucks to be dyslexic.
Good good book. I was so stoked to find out that movies would come out. I wanted to see how someone else saw the caracters.
Tom Bombadil is the shizznazz
lord of the rings is for dorks! pfffft.:D
Well, midnight viewers, how the hell was the movie?
It was damn good.
not midnight man from the states here, but i guess i can help.
it was really cool.
it blows you away.
but as a book maniac there were some parts i didt like that much.
+atmosphere, i didnt blink for some time
+effects they support the movie instead of making the movie
+ actors they all rocked
+ epic battles 6000 riders sweeping through foot soldiers has fascinating asthetic qualities.
+shakespearien like dialogues(sometimes)
-some story changes i didnt quite like but that is minor.
- too short --->looks like the other ones concerning cuts, the SEE will be the shit !!!
overall 9/10 points
Alrighty then.
Edit:
Too short? Isn't it like 3+ hours?
The bit that blew me away was when you worked out he was a ghost all along. Weird.Quote:

I'm reading the Silmarilion right now. I absolutely love how he created this whole universe with the intertwining of various religious and mythical backgrounds. Now normally that's nothing special, but Tolkien imparted great character development and a history all his own. And that's what makes this book. Great read.Quote:

Edit: And why the hell did Peter Jackson leave Tom Bombadil out of the first one? That was a travesty.
True dat. And then right when you think it's all gonna work out for the little fella, that SIZEABLE ship goes and sinks with a bunch of Celine Dion music playing.Quote:

Been trying to stay out of this thread, so I don't see any giveaways about the movie.Quote:

In the expanded DVD edition of The Two Towers, there's two additional DVD's that go into production etc, and give some background into the Bombadill thing, the explination of why it didn't fit into the timeline of the story and a few extra scenes that are in the expanded edition that are a tribute to that character. There's a scene where Merry and Pippen are enveloped by a tree, much like the Willow when they meet Bombadill in the book.
That was one of my favorite parts as a kid when my mom used to read it to me.
Oh, come on. You knew he was gonna commit suicide once it was revealed that Legolas was actually a woman.Quote:

I'll have to read the Simarillion (sp?) again. Hit that one when I was like 11 or 12 and I'm sure alot of it went over my head...shit, that happens when I read Peanuts.
Oh snap! I've been trying to change my image and look like him. I got extensions and had presthetics attached to my ears... even been wearing some armor to the office w/ a bow. They're a little worried here, mostly the defendants though when I walk into court.Quote:

The Silmarillion is a great read. Provides lots of background to LOTR, and is even more epic in scope.
Our local paper had a LOTR haiku contest. Here is the winner:
Gollum looks like my
Brother who uses Rogaine.
Grow precious hair. Grow.
:D
AWESOME HIAKU!

LOL Juan, nice Photoshop on that.
Is that also a trilogy?:D
well, i can finally read this thread now that i saw it friday night.
was amazing -- in his task of putting everything that happens in the third volume (and some of the second - shelob) into a movie under 4 hours, i thought he did an almost perfect job, plus so much added richness that was all PJ's and not even tolkein's!!
CAUTION SPOLIERS (maybe) AHEAD
but i really missed the love story btwn eowyn and faramir. i think that was an important statement about human perseverance, and the redemptive power of human love in the context of "life after death". and it wouldnt have taken much -- just one or two short scenes. afer all eowyn goes through, she deserves a happy ending!
was also somewhat disappointed by shelob. she is supposed to be an evil older than sauron, eternally hungry, bloated, foul, fearsome etc. although spider-like, she shouldnt have been JUST a big spider. and even if so, she shouldve way been bigger in relation to the hobbits. was hoping for more there.
but, on the value-added side, gollum was a masterpeice beginning to end. PJ fully understood his importance and i was thrilled with the opening scene! total surprise there. i also loved that he depicted the details of gollum's demise (not in the book), including the poignant/painful detail of gollum's attempt to protect the precious even as he is being bruned/dissolved alive by molten magma.
the lighting of the beacons of gondor was amazing -- a vison i didnt get from the books and didnt expect. glad they took the extra time for that nuance. very moving concept of calling for help from fellow humans across the miles. great use of the new CG flame program written during the filming of the trilogy, and of course stunning footage of new zealand -- including many skiable lines! :D
cant wait to see it again...
I was thinking exactly the same thing throughout all three movies.Quote:

I loved the film. Incredible story telling, good pacing, completely believable special effects. But did anyone else think it ended about six times? Seriously, the last 30 minutes could have been condensed to 10. Otherwise no complaints.
