mounting CMH Explosiv's

(did a search, turned up nothing. If this has already come up, sorry.)

So. My old AK Launchers are toast. The Solly's currently on them are being moved to a pair of CMH Explosivs.

So here's the question:

My Dynastar Inspireds, Ak Launchers, and Explosives are all more or less the same length (188, 190 and 190).

The marked mounting points are all very different: the Volkls are the farthest back, the Launchers are 3 cm farther forward than the Volkl, and the Inspired is WAY forward of both (I realize that marked mounting point on the Inspired is more of a center mount for flipping and spinning; if I had to do it over again, I'd mount it farther back).

(I also realize that the Volkls and K2s use the front of the boot as a reference, while the Inspireds uses the center of the boot; the differences described above are all based on where the front of the boots sits on each ski …)

So anyway, I'm tempted to mount the Volkls about 1.5 cm forward of the marked mounting point - that is, I'm planning on spitting the difference between where my Launchers were mounted and where Volkl recommends the Explosiv to be mounted.

I reckon that I'll lose a bit of float and stability (not a big concern, 'cause I hear a 190 Explosiv has float and stability to spare), but gain a little quickness. I'm pretty light (150 lbs), and I'm hoping to make the Volkls a little more maneuverable in tight spots.

FWIW - the skis will be used inbounds exclusively (too friggin' heavy to lug into the backcountry …) on powder days, and in the steeps. Sunshine Village, Lake Louise, Fernie, Kicking Horse. Also, I have pretty small boot - 287 mm sole length (men's 6.5).

Any thoughts, advice, or flames? I need to know ASAP as the Exsplosivs are sitting in my local ski shop waiting to be drilled.

I've played a bit with the mounting on mine (demo binders) and actually like them right on the line the best. I've only skied them 6 days at LL, SSV and Fernie, though. Hope this helps.

Not as light weight as you though. Vok's always look funny when you set them next to other com[anies in relation to the midpoint, but always seem to ski well where recomended.

i second the line. my 190 were on the line, the ones before i mounted 1.5 cm foward and they felt like snowblades...

I have 190 V-ex on the line. They are perfect. Trust Volkl.

I've been trying to figure this one out for a long while. I have an older pair of 180 CMH skis, they are marked at the boot tip. If you figure out the Boot center it's 86.2cm from the tail. This seems really far forward to me. I double checked on a newer pair of 180 CMHs and they measured like 78cm from the tail! (also boot center.) I'm still confused and can't decide where to mount mine. Can anyone else tell me at what point (boot center, distance from tail) they mounted theirs that skied neutral-ish?

I mounted them right on center as mentioned, the mark that is where the Blue and Yellow come to a horizontal line. You can see them in the picture, mounting line is approx. in the middle, but I don't know the actual measurement.

My 1st pair of CMH explosives had demo binders on them and I moved them all around last season. I found that even though it's nice to have them back a little on pow days, the center mount position seemed to work best overall.

Bump for help on the Red and Yellow CMH - mount mark.

The "I" on the sidewall just infront of serial number?

No other obvious mark

Or if anyone has yellow/blue CMH 180 with the mark visible can they give me measurement?

Here's what I found when I mounted my yellow and blue 180 CMH explosives.

Short story - The sidewall mark (vertical embossed line on sidewall) was a boot center mark. It almost lined up with the mark "where the Blue and Yellow come to a horizontal line" that CaddyDaddy77 talked about.

Th sidewall mark is 41 inches (aka - 104.14cm) from tip of ski; or 28 inches (aka - 71.12cm) from tail.
Using it put my boot toe (pinline) right on CC. (I wear a size 30.5 Garmont SuperG)

I'm guessing that's the mid-sole mark as mentioned. Have you used the measurements that Will found for comparison?

My old post of "using the line" is a little vague, never trust graphics, always double check the measurement, graphics are often off by a few mm's.

Mntlion posted a pic of some newer CMH's that sound a bit like that, but I'm too lazy to find it, you might just pm him directly.

I believe those are the new ones. If you got them from mntlion in the past two years, they are all pretty much boot center mount...The ones I got from him last year were marked as '02, just in front of the binding (hand written). He told me they were 2002 models...

i got those ones with the sketchy heli.

looks like something out of apocolypse now.

i cant find a centerline or any mounting marks on the ski at all. i'm planning to throw the solly jig over the existing holes and marking center from that.

unless someone tells me how blind i am and where i'm missing the mark.

Probably end up being more like apo-collapse now. I thought heli logo also looked like the logo from Miss Saigon.

The sidewall "I" mark that's close to the serial number is a little in front of Will's 41 inch measurement. It also looks like it'll be center of the old mount holes. As long as I don't get any overlap with Fritschi template over the old holes I'll go with it. I was thinking of mounting a little forward anyway.

I have emailed mntlion - but these are getting dropped off at the store tonight.

had a "meeting" at mr. britney's house this week and compared no less than 5 different pairs of explosivs. i have the same cmh graphic you are talking about.

we determined that the one you and i have is "new" - seems to be the same ski as the maroon buddha graphic from last season. there is a mark on the sidewall and it is for boot center. (only the old ones - meaning BEFORE they even made the wizard twin tips - were marked for boot tip).

when volkl went from boot tip to boot center, they also moved UP the spot where boot CENTER would be by a full 3 cm. this is the ski that mr. britney has. we confirmed by our comparison that when he mounted them "3 cm forward" (according to his boot tip mark), it actually put them neutral with the center mark on the wizard twin AND the new buddha gaphic (aka our red/blk/yellow CMH).

so, ALL further references to "__ cm forward" means forward from where the new CENTER mark is (so if you're looking at old boot-tip marked splosivs, add an additional 3 cm)

for tahoe skiiers anyway, the trend seems to be mounting them farther and farther forward. recall that spatulas are mounted about 9 cm forward from what would be a "traditional" mount.

one of our "meeting" attendees had them 3 cm forward from the center mark, and wants to move them even farther fwd, to 5 or 6 total cm forward. and believe me this guy is a sick skiier!

another has them about 1 cm forward from center, and loves them. (also sick, though i would describe his style as more traditional).

i am planning to go 4 cm forward, unless they can't do it with the current holes, in which case i am undecided between 3 and 5.

it just depends whether you want a traditional race-inspired "carve," or a progressive more upright stance and "slarve" of turns. (and side-sliding down spines, etc). in deep stuff like we get in tahoe, i am more interested in the progressive idea, as well as making it easier to hop turns faster in tight spots and deep snow. but that is me, and it looks like i am in the minority here! :D

Also just to add a bit of confusion to this. please measure from the tail to the center point as some off the skis had incorrect center points.

also the CMH from me are 1-2cm back of center as the guests in general like that. So if you have wee little feet and are useing the demo bindings you might want to remount just the heel, and then play with the centering, to get an idea of what is best for you.

So as for the 180 CMHs (Blue/Yellow) you sold to me in August, the line on the sidewall is for boot center?

Hopefully I relay the correct info to the boys at DPH when they mount my P9s on those puppies.

if it is between the toe and heel holes it is a center mount,

if it is at the toe holes it is a toe mount ;)


just kidding most CMH from me are marked center mount, and drilled for 2cm back of that, but people find differnt sweet spots in ANY ski so using the old demo binding holes to find what you like is never a bad thing. And might be one of the few good things about the atomic bindings.

Bwaah...help.

Getting my 180cm Explosives (04-05?) tomorrow and taking them up for mounting next week and i need some help now.

Local shopteches cant help a bit ( They dont sell Explosives in europe so they dont have experience mounting them...) and i want to make sure that
there is no unneccessary drilling.And yes i have read the mounting explos..posts.


To help me out: Me 180/70,sole 304mm.

I will use the ski as my hardpack/steep ski. I have my fatter boards for powder, so the floatation isnt a issue.

Previous similar ski was im85 monster, and the things i didnt like about it (apart for the sidecut,too much) was that it was mounted very far back, witch made it tiresome to make swing turns for long time.Also fucking in the bushes was a pain in the arse.

So i definetly need a lot more "swingable" mounting now.

I was thinking of mounting the ski 2.5cm forward, but britneys comments made me consider if i should mount them even further?

By the end of last season, I had my cmh's moved ~2cm forward of the center mark and it seemed to be a pretty good balance of hard/soft performance. I'd likely go a little forward of that (maybe 1-1.5 cm's more) if I was going for pure hard performance. But that's just me.

Spam I've remember hearing that 'the boys' in Cham were mounting Explosivs 1-1,5cm forward. I guess you can't go wrong with that. Maybe even 2,5 cm isn't too bad? I think Britney has good point in her answer - depends on your style...and I think you're pretty new school, eh?(well, compared to some big old race horses there are...:) )

I think Head has the mounting point also pretty far back on their fatties. Last season I compared my Im 103's with some other skis and found out that the mounting point was pretty much alike with Explosives. Based on that I decided to mount them 1,5 forward...which worked out nice - there's still A LOT of ski infront of the binding, yet they also turn suprisingly quickly!

Off topic: We're all pussies though...just watched Morrison Chronicles and those old shots with Conways and Cummings in the beginning made me think how spoiled we are these days...:) Those guys did incredible things on skinny ass GS skis back then...(well, I know everybody knows this but still...it's always good to get some humbling reminder once in a while that it's the SKIER not the skis that make the difference...earlier in the day I was just pondering if my Im 103's are a bit SKINNY for the real good days, doh!)

If they are Retail Explosives I would go on the line, if they are CMH explosives, I'd go forward 2 - 2.5 cm...I think there is a thread here somwhere "explosive mounting" with the tail to centerpoint measurments for the retail explosives in case you have the CMH's which are mounted back I'm told to reduce tip dive with inexperenced powder skiers.......my own CMH's last year were mounter on the CMH boot toe (old CMH's)...they took some getting used to and skied much like my old 203 GS boards, by season end I could bump ski them but I guess I'd got used to them...my current 02 CMH's are on the retail line and are much easier to ski...pushed forward (on demo tracks) they get squirly and are unstable at speed (80 kph)

I have a pair of older 180 Explosivs(like 8 years old) with the boot tip mounting line and they are pretty much identical in size and shape to the newer maroon Ex's. On the newer maroon Ex's in a 180, Volkl suggests mounting with the mid-sole at 73.5cm from the tail. I had to mount my older Ex's with the mid-sole at about 73cm from the tail due to the old drill holes, but I find that my boot tip(312mm sole) is about 2~2.5cm forward of the old boot tip mounting line. Seems to me that from the older Ex's to the newer ones, Volkl has moved the mounting point forward 2.5~3cm.
