had just posted this as well:
Mitch is reporting this AM that Carl Skoog died in SA:
http://www.telemarktips.com/TeleNews.htmQuote:
10/21-- American climbing and ski mountaineering legend Carl Skoog has apparently been killed in an accident on the South Face of 6,670m Mt. Mercedario in Argentina, according to a report in a local paper, Diario de Cuyo <http://www.diariodecuyo.com.ar/home/new_noticia.php?noticia_id=122760>. The article reports that Carl fell on a 60 degree slope at around 4,000m and hit his on a rock outcropping. We are working on getting an accurate translation of the story as this tragic story continues to unfold. We will update as more information becomes available. The Telemarktips crew extends its sincere condolences to his brother Lowell, as well as the rest of the Skoog family, and his many friends.
I know more than a few mags knew him :( sad.
RIP
Fuck no. Here's a great guy, classic pioneer, ripping dood.
A total loss for us.

His brother Lowell has provided what he knows on the above linked thread.
some may remember his work (among many other awesome pictures)
Fuck no...
I know of you guys on here knew Carl pretty well....deepest heartfelt condolences to you guys. And of course of the Skoog family as well.
Damn
Holy shit. He is the photog that Hop primarily shot with and traveled with over the last few years. In fact, I am pretty sure that Hop was supposed to meet up with him at some point over the last month while in SA.
Wow...such a sad loss to the PNW community for sure. Positive vibes to his family and friends sent.
Another fallen brother... :frown:
between this thread and Woodsy's homeless buddy, it's a bit gloomy around these parts today...
What horrible news.
Carl Skoog has done so much of the exploring and documenting of PNW moutaineering and skiing, his work leaves an indellible mark for sure.
He and his brother are some of the guys that me and my friends have always looked up, right up there with Fred Beckey and other PNW pioneers. I remember when my pal Dave first announced that his wife was pregnant I asked him, "are you excited?" His response, "Hell yeah, I'm starting my own team of little Skoogs."
RIP
RIP Carl Skoog :(

HOP, check in, buddy. Hope your okay. If there's anything we can help with, drop a line.
I echo the senitiments of everyone else here. Tragic loss for skiing and the PNW.
R.I.P. Carl
NO
a tragic loss to the mountaineering community
Horrible news, and my thoughts go out to all of Carl's friends and family. An accomplished photographer and ski mountaineer, Carl worked with many of us here at Couloir. For those not familiar with Carl, I reposted the profile that we ran on him and his brother last year (here). His website www.carlskoog.com offers just a glimpse of the amazing stuff that he did and captured over the years.
Carl's loss will be felt deeply through the backcountry and ski mountaineering community, and he will be greatly missed. Truly sad.

I keep trying to make this not real. Maybe there has been some mistake made? Some elaborate and creul hoax perhaps??
But it is real, isn't it? We have all lost a great skier and photographer and human being. Many of us have also lost a great friend.
My condolensces and most sincere Buddhist prayers go out to Carl, his brothers, his family, and to all touched by Carl's journey on Earth.
RIP Carl Skoog.
RIP Carl Skoog, you were certainly a pioneer and will always be remembered as one.

:( I used to work with his brother Gordy at a ski shop, where Carl's photos were all over the walls. Never knew Carl, but I certainly knew his work.
RIP Brother.
Hop annd other mags in the know, deepest sympathies.
Horrible news. :frown:
rip to a northwest legend. it always seems so far away until it happens close to home.
Damn this sucks. I had just started working with him a bit in our catalog...so sad. My prayers go out to his family and friends...
It is a sad sad day. The loss of a great skier and a great man.
God, one of our own is coming to you. Please take good care of him.
Thanks
Josh
RIP on the great summit in the sky.
Oh man, i feal like i just got kicked in the stomach. Skoog was by far one of the most acomplished ski mountaineers and photogeraphers there was. While me and him didnt always see eye to eye, I learned the majority of my skills as a photographer, and I had the highest respect for him, his images and his feats in mountianeering.
Skoog and Rene where attempting a first decent on Mercidino (SP) The accounts that I have gotten so far are a little grey but it sounds like they encounted a white out, and skoog slipped and fell. I believe that they where in the process of decending after having reached the summit when the accidnt happened. I am not sure if they where ropped to gether or not. When Rene found Carl, he had allready passed away do to head trama. Rene is now at a military base that he hiked to after the accident, and is awaiting permission from the goverment to return home with the body.
Please note that this is based upon two seperate accounts. I am still waiting for more detials and to confirm this information.
Skoog shot with many of the maggots on this board, and his images have graced the pages of every outdoor publications. He and his brother Lowe pioneered most of the ski mountianeering routes in the PNW.
RIP SKOOG You WILL BE MISSED!

This is definately a sad day for skiing. Carl has been involved in some seriously impressive adventures in his day, and although he passed away doing something that he loved, it is still a major shock and bummer for the rest of us who knew him, either through his photography, through friends, or over an apres-ski beer in the taproom. Saying that Carl and his work will be missed is an understatement :( Also, support goes out to Rene who is still down there, and is going to have the burden of bringing Carl back home on his shoulders.
RIP Carl. My condolences to his family and friends.
I had the honor of conversing with Carl recently regarding his relationship with some of the new Eider athletes. I came away from our somewhat lengthy conversation with a great opinion of him. I felt that he was really laid back, down to earth, and easy to talk to. I definitely looked forward to working with him.
Bummer. Here's to you Carl. May your spirit live on in all of those you've touched.
such sad news.
my prayers are going out to Carls family and friends.
I know he will be missed.
Very sad. Very sad.
Poored a bit out for fallen Homie tonight.
I skied with Carl a couple winters ago for a day. Didn't really know him, but I appreciate his work and where he came from. I know the baker crew is tight and he will be sorely missed. RIP, dude. Thoughts to those left behind.
RIP sad indeed

Damn, Adam and Grant and whoever else here just lost a friend, so sorry.
Even without believing in an afterlife, it's hard to resist the wish that Carl's already linked up with Craig Kelly and Hans Saari and Alex Lowe and two of my friends, Scott Dull and Rob Makepeace...
