I’m a downstream product of a Viking who knocked up a Scottish lass in the 1100’s and settled down on an island in the Outer Hebrides. 500 years later (the 1600’s) one of his descendants is listed in church records as “Banished to The New World “. And I’m descended from that guy.
Pretty sure Scotland won’t take me back.

a coworker and their family (parents and sibling) got their Italian citizenship several years ago. They didn’t have all the paperwork and had to be “adopted” by a village and live there for several weeks.
My personal story is that several great uncles/aunts (first gen American born) went to Italy and Sicily to find their extended families and could not find anybody that shared their name by spelling. I think this was in the 1980’s. They never figured out why their father changed the spelling and had cousins nearby (same name spelling- their fathers immigrated together) that had experienced the same problem. The oldest aunt’s birth certificate (born in Colorado) has a different spelling than their younger siblings. Their mother (my great grandmother) was a very young bride shipped off to the states, and they think it was just a mistake made at the hospital.
When my wife looked into the possibility of citizenship this summer, she found about $5k per person.
