I’m of the belief that at the time these manufacturers were just slapping their bindings on risers, and the screws were the same as flat mounts. Any input as to why I couldn’t just mount these flat? The plate screws and the binding screws are definitely different, right?

Yo N! Fairly sure they're standard length. I've had a few pairs of race bindings, never an issue with mounting flat. For those SPX, you may have to device your own template or jig, though.

Are those SPX or Rockerace? I don't know the difference. Regardless, one of those pictured are probably going onto an RC85 next winter.

No worries, brother. For flat SPX mounting, I think people on philpug's site have made it successfully. Just remember the toe AFDs are alpine iso5355 only, so no gripwalk soles.

Considering I just scored 2 legit (and minty clean) rad-ass bindings for a mere 100$, I'm quite certain that I'll have to fill that financial gap with another ski.

I'd say that any solly 9series clamp can be mounted with or without some type of riser. I roll a lift on skinnier skis, and go flat mount on fatter skis.
You can mount both of those flat no problem. Keep in mind that the Rossi binding has a shorter mounting platform in the heel than a standard spx heel. (80mm fore-aft on center vs 105)
Screw depth should be 8mm plate or no. Only time you would run into an issue is if someone was using shims for a gas pedal or something.
Rockerace heel has a very short platform and most of the heel track is elevated off the ski. Look says you shouldn't mount them without a plate, but it's been done.
Solly ski is an atomic double deck clone.
Welp, my motivation is fading. They’re mint bindings (as in— newish) but both have an annoying metal strip between toe and heel.
And the Rossi’s have that strip above the riser, not integral at all, and it feels like this wired metal strip that doesn’t need to exist. I’d like to just dremel it away.
The Solly’s have the same metal strip, but that entire unit— the plate— is like a meter long, with floating mounting screws. It’s insanely integrated.
Yes, both can be mounted flat- just like you could technically screw your boots to a ski.
But the realist side of me is like- there’s no reason to hoard either of these bindings. Cheap is not enough reason.

Don't dremel! The bindings, while weighing a touch more than standard, are actually great. Will allow the skis to flex more freely than standard. Pretty neat.

So... would you mount that Rossi binding with or without the riser underneath that steel strip on an RC85? That steel strip (the AFD extending from toe to heel, but sitting above a 1cm riser that doesn't connect toe to heel) seems kind of dumb.
I could ditch the risers, just mount the SPX flat with that steel strip for the AFD-to-heel, but the other part of me is like-- bro, just buy a new pivot or a strive. that steel strip just feels so old.
The other part of me is like-- Bro, these FIS legit bindings are basically brand new.
Ok there’s the thing- keep it simple.
If you are a DIN boot guy, buy the skis.
Unscrew the bindings- don’t mess w the plates. Put bindings on your rc85.
That’s it.
I’m still coureous what the Sali ski is. When the new rc73 comes out, we can talk plates.

Also the metal band is designed to be set for various boot sole ranges so if you can, use the plate on the ski as a reference.

As waxman said, Those 916's are the same as all other 996/900/916 holes. And 90% sure the SPX race heel is the same hole pattern as the axial2 15/18 heels. Agreed that any real ski shop should have both of these jigs. Paper jigs are certainly on the google doc.
And dude, IMO the metal bar skis BETTER than non-connected bindings. I run the tyrolia RDx freeflex binding (same functional design) on basically all of my skis from HB122 to R110 to RC85. No downside, all upside. Just saying!

Most of those ZZ Lab 916's had metal heels and metal toes. I can see in your photo that your pair has plastic toes. Before you buy, try to see if the heel is plastic or metal, just so you know what you're getting.
I prefer the metal + metal version. Plenty of people here prefer the versions with plastic toe with metal heel, but most people here don't like the plastic heel version.

Thanks for that. I think the heels are plastic... they have that seem that appears to be from the mould. Unfortunately, they're virtually scratch-free, kind of hard to tell. My fingernail/knuckle punch doesn't do a very good job at discriminating. But I'm pretty sure metal would't have a mould seem. "Obvious plastic" of the toe is not so obvious in the "potentially injected plastic composite" of the heel.Quote:

Yeah, it was pretty hard to imagine how they could have gotten much worse; the old 10 2Vs with the tail wider than the tip were noodles, I went over the bars on my brother's pair coming out of the gate on nastar. Atomic got real bindings and Salomon got real skis, hallelujah.Quote:
