So saw the doc today because of a serious regression in my progress the last few days, I'm basically back on crutches. All is ok, and I feel like a weight has been lifted, I was actually getting very scared about this whole thing. He checked me over really well for 20 minutes and said the tear is quite serious but it's not totally ruptured (or detached). He doesn't see a need for, or benefit from, surgical intervention. The big swelling and pain in my achilles and ankle (which has made me pick up the crutches again, as it's quite hard to walk) is normal as the nasty inflammatory fluids make their way down the leg. He does suggest complete recovery is 6 months though and that it will be likely another 5 weeks before I can start a real physio program. In the meantime gentle massage (from RMT's) and ultrasound from physios is about it. I would advise anyone against choosing this injury.
