Hope everyone’s earth is turned and green things growing.

My project for the last month was moving my Mom’s 12’x8’ greenhouse to our place. Dad hasn’t used it for a few years, and was amiable to me disassembling and bringing back with us; he spent a month convalescing with us after having a few toes amputated. He enjoyed watching me dig in the foundation and new beds. Attachment 494397
It was 25years since the folks built it so I ordered new glazing for it. Took almost 4wks to get the panels. Tripped down to Kelowna last Monday to pick them up. Also had to wash every part of the frame as it was coated with algae and mildew. Even some liken and moss growth.

Took most of a 12hr day to get the frame washed, assembled, and the glazing installed. Today was the roof vents and door.

Turned the earth a few more times and tomorrow the Tom’s and cukes leave the living rooms and take residence in their new home.

Wife should be stoked when she returns tomorrow night from the island.

I’m sore. Bushmills being liberally applied.

I left some stuff in last season, onions are separating and flowering. Herbs are doing good, thyme, oregano, chives, parsley, and sage all winter well here.

Been carrying soil prep and working the beds, beans and beets went in tonight. Going to put in the tomato and pepper seedlings tomorrow.

^ i've probably asked you this before, are those hops quick growing? would love to try a hop wind wall.

i'm a little behind here this year, hope to do the big planting today or tomorrow. garlic, onion, potatoes are in of course, but everything else got put off a week.

Finally got things out of the sun room and into the dirt. 14 tomatoes, 2 zukes, 2 yellow squash, and a row of green beans.

Inherited a couple more zukes from a friend and will squeeze those in somewhere...

Apple tree is budding nicely and raspberries humming with bees. Went with pots this year, got them for free from a friend. Planted pretty early in May but I think they’ll make it. I’m done with ground growing, the slugs won.

They grow super fast and establish easily. Skifishbum gave me a pod of rhizomes a few years ago. They die to the ground at the end of the growing season and cover my fence by this time every year. I throw them a little fertilizer every year and hardly water them. I dug up a few and transplanted them down my fenceline a bit, now blocking the neighbors even more effectively.

I don’t know anyone that home brews but I have a shit ton of hops every year. If anyone would like them let me know.

Roof vents with new cylinders. Pricey things for lasting less than a decade. Have to research what the wax they use for the hydraulics, and try to rebuild the old ones.

legit. dig your posts about assembling that. and thx for including the dingo, i miss mine.

I think I'm just going to sit outside at night and around sunrise with a pellet gun. Fukn birds and little critters are eating all the strawberries and lettuce. Something actually ripped out a bunch of onions and leeks and enjoyed them a few days ago, yesterday two of the strawberries in hanging pots were stripped and today they got the rest.

I love the garden thread. Is anyone else in zone 3? I'm higher than 10k and there was a thin sheet of ice on the birdbath this morning. I do have a row of rhubarb in full bloom, pretty amazing, maybe people want to see a pic of that...

Hey Shera. This year I have 2 Great Mulleins in the yard, you need to send me a mailing address so I can send seeds when it's time.

This heat is tough, I've been watering the hanging baskets a few times each day and wetting the beds down a few times too to keep the soil temps down in the sun.

Hey thanks for remembering! I did find a couple of patches last summer after tuning my eye to it. Even had a single small one start randomly in the backyard, but no sign of anything anywhere this year, maybe in a month or so?

I've been reading that it's not always a perennial. Some years it comes back and some it doesn't. When you see patches they're different every year as some plants come back and others don't.

OMG my raspberry patch is out of hand and keeps expanding. I'm gonna have to cut paths through it :eek: The blackberry cane is about 15 feet long and loaded with berries. Hopefully the birds leave me a few haha. Tomatoes started slow but are popping now, peppers are staying really short and squat but are starting to produce.

I'm glad that the birds appreciate the time and effort I put into growing berries but I think they're missing an important point. They're supposed to be for ME.

Between the cat early in the spring using the bed as a litterbox, and the robins after the fruit, I got creative. Seems to work. I’m willing to share, but when the birds only peck half the strawberry then move to the next, I get annoyed.

gl curious what kind of birds are targetting your raspberries? We have a decent patch and I'm lucky to report birds around here have never been an issue. (but yeah, strawberries on the other hand..)

Dunno about GL, but the squirrel braves the cats for the raspberries. Speaking of which, haven’t seen that rodent in a couple months…

the gardener ( LTR tennant) has some nice flowers so does the new neighbor, nice to look at and no maintenace

There is always too much so a great way to preserve Rhubarb is cut into 1" chunks and dehydrate it, lots of flavor so its great when you been paddling or back packing and the wrapper for whatever you are eating tastes > the food

^^ I dunno for sure it's birds but in the morning I'll see them flitting around in there. I'm starting to get snackworthy pulls most days now so I guess I hit that balance of enough for me and the critters. I need WAY more strawberries to hit that balance point. Working on it :)

Tomatoes are going great, herbs are herbing and I've got a pepper experiment going pretty well. I had some doing really poorly so I transferred a bunch of clover to within a few inches of them. They're only like 10" tall but they're dark green and producing now! I guess they needed the nitrogen. Blackberries are looking great but now I need them to slow down or they'll be ready when we're out of town from the 8-12th. I'll be so bummed to lose the hundreds of berries on those canes.

I've been putting this together as I harvest more rocks from around the property. Everything here other than some of the gravel came out of my ground. I found two more stashes of good sized rocks a little while ago so I should be able to finish this soon. All of the plants are Northeast natives and a few are edible. Some of those big rocks at the bottom are 300 pounds easy. Fukn hassle to move and set but I'm on a mission.

Yes. Prickly Pear cactus is native to the Northeast and Northern Midwest.

Oh man, thanks for the head's up! I looked up my county and it lists "Moth Mullein" not Common Mullein. Can you identify? It also says 0 occurances in my county.

I already scattered seeds onto some bare ground, but I can deal with it if necessary. My biggest issues that I fight are false chamomile and dandelions. Just found some thistle and cut that down, and I have oxeye daisies and red clover that I'm not controlling.

AFAIK, *all* mullein is invasive.

All mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is introduced to NA. Not a noxious weed in most regions per se, but in marginal arid ecosystems, it is a competitor to native plants.

It’s a prolific seeder and banked seeds can remain viable for a century. So once it goes to seed it is hard to completely eradicate from a site. It doesn’t spread far on its own, so if you find an isolated patch, it was brought there by humans or their animals.

In Colorado Moth mullein (Verbascum blattaria) is on the b list with no occurrences in Lake County while Common mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is on the c list with no controls. I guess I won't sweat it til I learn something specifically different.

Raspberry canes are 6-9 feet tall and flowering like mad. Harvest is gonna be a pita. Tomatoes are also 6 feet tall and loaded. Peppers are having a terrible year.

Mmmm, saltimbocca. I haven't made that in a long time. I also have purple sage going but it's new, this plant is a monster. I need some more ideas for how to use it.

I'm telling you - fried sage leaves are delicious and you can use up a SHITLOAD.

ETA: I'm talking "crisp-fried" not deep-fried. I've never tried deep-fried sage leaves, but I'd wager they're even better than the crisp-fried.
