I was wondering when this would get started. I've got one buddy looking for bear intermittently right now. I'm registered for TAC in Big Sky as well as Sunlight basin. Stoked to hit Colorado. Will bring bikes as well.
Just got my muley euro mount back from my buddy.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6f53b74e65.jpg
Very nice mount! That's a nice muley.
Quick Question: I always thought that if you drew a rifle tag for elk in Idaho, you could still hunt archery earlier in the season. And if you're successful during Archery your rifle tag is void? Had dinner at my hunting buddies house last night and four people had four different answers. As per usual the hunting regulations from IDFW don't clarify this very well. Thoughts?
P.S. I didn't draw in Montana for non-res tags. Hoping that Idaho is a bit more successful. Cow Elk, General Deer and Archery Pronghorn are the objectives.
It depends on the tag/zone. Some have early archery bull that turn into rifle cow later. Many however are single weapon/season, especially if there’s a controlled hunt in that zone. For example Diamond creek is OTC capped archery or you can apply for a late rifle cow.
Back in the dedicated hunter program in UT for another three years, will by an OTC elk tag and hopefully an antlerless elk tag.
Just drew CO 75 4th rifle outside Durango so if anyone has any beta for that hunt, I'm all ears. Have a few connections down there.
Have a wedding in Ithaca, NY 10/19 :cussing: but might try to tack on a VT or NY deer hunt to that.
Started off with a UT Limited Entry Turkey Tag in April:

Didn't draw shit in MT so far. Waiting for the antelope drawing. Not super hopeful on that one though. I'm out for archery after shoulder surgery and hopefully shooting the rifle is OK. Really thinking I need to size down to a trendy 6.5? Most devisive round ever. People love them or look down on people for shooting them. I've only ever shot 30-06 for the last 25ish years. I had a Rem 270 as a kid and shot caribou and big black bears with it. Perfectly capable.
You said it ...devisive. But, the only real place I think it deserves debate is for elk. I shoot a 6.5CM on my deer rifle and then have a .300WM for elk.
It's my opinion-and only that--that I like the margin for error that a .300 provides on such a large animal while enjoying the lightweight and minimal waste of a 6.5 on mule deer and whitetail. A 6.5CM will absolutely kill elk but arguably with less room for error. But for each their own. Plenty of peeps have been killing elk with 270W forever.

WRG - When I replaced my 30-06 which wouldn't group any longer I wish I would have bought the 6.5 instead of the 7mm rem since I don't ever intend to shoot an ID elk w a rifle. The newer .06 loads brings the caliber into the new age so to speak, perhaps avoiding the purchase of another rifle.
I have both a 6.5 creed and a 7mm rem mag.
I would shoot elk with the 6.5 with a hornady 143 eldx broadside. But that's about it.
I've shot several deer with the 6.5 and they didn't complain. The 7mm made a bit more wasted meat.
The 6.5 is a pleasure to shoot and i could put 100 rounds down range in my xbolt no problem.
20 to 30 or if the 7mm and I'm good.
There are so many great rounds available for the 6.5. i wouldn't hesitate on a deer with it.
If the .06 is a shooter, keep it and hand roll some light loads for it for deer/‘lopes and then build some heavier loads for elk. Or just roll up a single do all load and keep money in your pocket to upgrade the glass. The .06 is a game killer out to range the majority of people should limit themselves. You could also put a sims pad on it as well as a muzzle brake.

Any one shooting TAC at bigsky this weekend? I'll be down there again.
Well TAC at bigsky was awesome as always. Going to venture down to the one in Colorado in a couple weeks. Family is coming in the camper this time.
Any one shooting the moonlight basin TAC?
Drew nothing in Idaho, as is my custom.
OTC elk and deer, plus a ton of beaks are inbound.

I put in for an antlered moose this year. Based on last years stats I have a 12 percent chance based on my points of drawing it. Hoping i do.. otherwise general otc for me.
Next year's draw opens 7/1 here in AK.
Don't know whether to loose $200 with ADF&G or PowerBall?
Come to think of it, $200 is a rounding error in a tip for some hunts, so I'll live a little and do both.
It took almost three decades worth of nonresident bonus points but finally pulled a kickass Utah elk tag. I already have two bulls in the 360’s so hoping for a 370 class bull or tag soup. ??????
Been down there twice already and antler growth looks awesome, if they have a normal monsoon season it should be a phenomenal year for big racks on Utah’s southern LE elk units.
Any Schnee's guys on here? I have had Hoffmans for the past 5 seasons or so. On a 4 day hunt last fall I stupidly put the boots too close to the stove and one of em got fucked up. It like melted the sole a bit and distorted the inner somehow. Even a re-sole wouldn't save em I don't think.
Schnee's on sale until 7/12. Beartooth or Granite? I want something pretty stiff like the Hoffman. Mostly for elk hunting, but we do end up on scree sometimes and I will use them for general alpine hiking too.
Go granite if you want a stiffer type boot. They are heavier than the Btooth.

I have some of the shittiest ankles around. Narrow feet. I have the Timberline that I used for deer and elk hunting. The Granite is solid, but it is by far the best boot I've ever had on my feet . No break in.. No hot spots. Would highly recommend
He's not wrong. I prefer the Beartooth and they'll last me about 3 seasons, which seems like about all you can ask for these days. Generally I'd say Schnees and Kenetrek are pretty comparable, in my experience. I haven't had great luck with Crispi in terms of durability but they're really comfortable.
Shameless plug for work but wrg are you on Expertvoice? If not pm me. That discount may be able to be extended

sorry about dumping that, didn't realize Phall sold boots and didn't want to be 'that guy'...
Ribelles have a wider forefoot than other fruitboots, even other Scarpas
My foot is 10.5-11 D. Size 45 Ribelle HD fits with superfeet green and darntough full cushion.
They feel monstrous anywhere indoors, but outdoors they become compact and fleet. I think the footbed is wider than the ground contact area, which gives that gofast feeling.
The Ribelle lacing system is awesome, and the ankle can be tightened/loosened independently of the foot, which gives real options when it's steep.
They're right at home in the black rock, or crossing a glacier splashing through meltwater slush [w/gaiters]. I've also put a couple 20mi days in them and didn't regret it.
They're a little much for a daily driver, but they are the bees knees in the hills.
I did 14 miles and 4000ft on brand new Schnee's Granites today. Dope fucking boots.
Unbelievable!
My hunting partner and I get into some stupid day hikes this time of year. Vaguely scouting and mostly just hiking. I brought my trail sneakers in my pack in case these boots wrecked me, but nope. Honestly the rest of my body is more sore than my feet. Really glad I went with the granite instead of beartooth. Beartooth would be too soft. Rough trail sections and off trail/sidehill up and down from the summit and the added stiffness is just what I needed.
I actually sized up a half a size (my normal size only had barely a finger of room behind the heel with the "ski boot test") and went with wides which I have never gone wide ever before. No toe bang even going straight down steep off trail. Overall more comfort but I don't feel any slop. Sure a couple hot spots as expected with brand new stiff boots, but no blisters or wrecked toe nails.
Hope they don’t stretch too much and become a sloppy blistery mess once fully broke in.

If you have EEs I can see why you might be put off by the whole "Just go up in length until the width gets right" Eurothing.
Might be better to find an earnest underground cobbler in Portlandia to UV-weld up something special? Your Julius II to his Michelangelo; cry once and every rebuild thereafter [if you can track a hipster flake boot dream enabler down], but not from hurty feets, o patron of the arts and perambulator of hilly heights.
