Friend that is meeting up with us has a company place in Tahoe Park? Is this a good location for the summit? I'm totally unfamiliar with the area, and not really sure it's distance to the resorts.

Just got your email mang....I gotta run, but I'll shoot you off something later this evening. You'll probably get good beta here though too.
But briefly, (and hopefully some of the other guys can help me out here):
time to squaw/Alpine: 30 minutes? maybe?
time to Sugar Bowl: 45? 50?
time to Kirkwood:
if 89 is open: 1 hour?
if 89 is closed: hmmmmmm.....2????
I used to live there. It's 10 minutes from Tahoe City, max. With good roads/traffic, you'll be in Squaw or Alpine in 20 mins. Down to South Lake is it's own adventure. Good roads, 30 minutes to the town. Sugar Bowl's going to be a drive, since you gotta go back out to Truckee and then up the Pass. Probably close to an hour.
It's not (((close))) to any resorts, save Homewood, but it's probably about as right in the middle as it gets if you're planning on hitting Squaw, Sugar Bowl and Kirkwood. Sunnyside's a fun place to get drinks and food, and it's a reasonable cab ride to Tahoe City- check the Naughty Dawg and Pete n Peters.

Caddy Daddy - That's a nice area, but the traffic on weekends can be unbearable getting into and out of Tahoe City, and as usual, to Squaw. The reason is its far from Kirkwood, and I feel safe on the presumption, you have to drive around three quarters of the lake to get there because Hiway 89 closes in the winter, seldom ever opening until mid-April. If you can find an option in Incline, Carnelian Bay,Kings Beach or South Lake, I'd say go there.Quote:

For anyone looking for a good, cheap hotel, check out the Crown in Kings Beach. On the water, humble and CHEAP. There's a room on the water with a fireplace that's the best room in the joint and the price is staggeringly reasonable. It's older, but then......

If 89 closes I would have a hard time going south, towards Heavenly? Am I correct in my thinking? Would I have to then go up and around to get to Kirkwood? Sorry for the tard q's but I have no experience in this locale.
The deal is pretty sweet, free on the weekend and then $180 for the whole house on the weekdays, with five people it's bargain shopping for sure, but trying to figure out if it's a good location when I haven't ever been there is a bit difficult.

Just throwing my experience up here, but going around the east side of the lake is pretty quick. I made it from South Lake to Truckee in an hour this weekend. No traffic though, but the pass up by Flatstar was a bit hairy. 89 takes forever even with dry roads, and I wouldn't want to drive it if the roads are slick. Up by Emerald Bay there's a stretch of road that is two lanes with no guard rails and no shoulder with 400 foot cliffs on both sides. Freaked me out in sunny dry weather.
With jumping from North Lake resorts to South Lake resorts it's going to be a good amount of driving no matter where you stay.
just stating the obvious cause i havent seen it so far -- you would be in the "west shore" (in the greater region of "north shore")which is homewood/sunnyside zone. i love the west shore because of the big trees. you are right -- it is kind of in the middle of everything, but that also means you have to drive to everything. closest burg is tahoe city, and the bars there appear to be "pete n peters" and "pierce street annex" behind the safeway (unless i'm missing out on the cool bars - prolly so).
for the summit, id say you should (ideally) get 2 different places to stay -- one in north shore for squaw/alpine/etc. (this place in west shore would count), and another one in south shore for the days you will be at kwood or heavenly. the drive around the lake is hairy. making the drive for one day can be OK, but you wouldnt want to make it a daily commute.

They close it when it gets snowy, so this is where the problem is - if it's dumping, that part of 89 is closed so you are forced to go around the entire lake to get to Kwood and south shore. That's got to be a haul, though I don't know the timing.Quote:

If 89 is closed at emerald bay (the primary closure spot), from the west shore, you have a minimum of a 40mile trip around the lake. In snowy conditions it takes a while.
Now imagine driving on that stretch after a storm when there's a nice layer of ice/sluff on it. Everyone (myself included) was driving so slowly a 100 year old grandma with a walker would have passed us. Scariest drive evar!Quote:

Yikes Arty! That's my worst nightmare. When did you have to do that?
I was headed up to Alpine right after a big late season dump and it was snowing lightly that morning as I recall. 89 was relatively clear but that one section was very, very, very hairy. I've never been so scared in a car.
So I've gathered that I should take one for the team and bring a two -wheel drive dually 350 Chevy that is unable to travel over 30 miles at a time, therefore making it snow nightly. Is this correct?;)

As far as accommodations go, I always stay on the south shore. When going around the lake, the drive up the east side is usually pretty decent (even in the summer it's way faster than going Hwy 89) and you're closer to K-wood.
I like the idea of getting places on both ends of the lake, depending on where we're skiing a particular day, and spliting with others.

Caddy Daddy - The problem being on the West Shore around Homewood is only really problematic on weekends - when traffic into and out of Tahoe City can back up to Incline in one direction, Truckee in the other, making the shortest part of the trip the longest. It can be a major roadwreckfest for gaper drivers up there, the only drawback to living on the North Shore, as far as I'm concerned. BUT- if you get started nice and early, most of them are still having tea and crumpets while you're making tracks south.
Hey Caddy Daddy -- my 2 cents:
At the BC summit I stayed with friends in Nelson and missed the unscheduled late night playtime. It's funner staying at the official maggot headquaters once they're sorted out. Sure you'll get less sleep and your head will hurt all day every day but that's why you're going, right?
i'm liking the idea of half north / half south. try to get as many rooms in the same place at each and go from there???? could we get a bunch of rooms at this place splat is talking about?
Everyone else answered the question....but, if any of you coming from out of town are renting a car or driving, you should if at all possible make it a 4wd.
Seriously, california throws up chain controls after an inch of snow. if you have a 4wd you just bust on through, if not, pull over and attach your chains. it is a big pain in the ass and will cost you valuable time. this is especially true getting to kirkwood.
Been pm'ing with X boat about the Summit accomodations and he brought up a valid point that was mentioned during the summer:
What about booking most of, or an entire hotel, one on the North Shore, one on the South, to keep the group close so the liveporn internet spancers at maggotsex.com don't have to run as many cameras.
