Feeler: Bike Shop Tool Liquidation

Sold off my bike shop awhile back and still have a litany of bike tools. Have them listed on various platforms but wanted to see if there is any interest here?

BEFORE the price police arrive and fuckin’ roast me, I haven’t made any changes to reflect mag pricing as I just want to gauge interest. And, full disclosure, if you own or work in a bike shop and can buy your tools for wholesale cost from QBP or BTI, you should do that instead.

You don't have any chain whip pliers, huh?

According to most mags, you could replace just about every tool on that list with some sweet Knipex pliers.

I actually liquidated a bike shop 5 years ago. 50% off is a good starting point on tools

We’re friends with a couple who owned a little bike park that closed down. The wife spent the next 18 months selling off every tool, Tshirt, and helmet for a few bucks off retail prices and. Tight is how she ran the business when it was open and that’s how she insisted on squeezing it long after it was dead. Would never occur to her to cut her losses.

If you actually want to liquidate in a timely fashion, 10% isn't going to do it.

Curious, if 10% is your idea of "closeout liquidation", what did you consider a "sale" to be when you were open?

If you don’t buy from your LBS instead of the webs, then the LBS will close. Oh. Wait. Here we are.

Side rant. Hate it when my lbs sells small supplies for 20% plus over msrp. I want to buy from you but fuck that shit.

My LBSs don't exactly stock a huge range of tools. And they also all offer 10% off to members of the local trail organization on parts/accessories (which I believe includes tools)

REI will sell you most of these tools for 20% off multiple times a year, brand new with a great return policy. Or 10% off any day of the year via the member dividend (and I don't know anyone who has ever had trouble spending their dividend...so that's almost as good as cash).

It is not like I'm seeing a bunch of tools on here that are hard to source for consumers...

My general rule for any use-but-in-good-shape item for sale is that, if I got it for wholesale or proform, I'll sell it for roughly what I paid for it. Sometimes less. That goes for tools or any other product.

Buying things at wholesale and then selling them at retail is called "operating a business." But that's entirely different than selling used stuff to random people on the internet.

I am working on adjusting to closer to 50% off MSRP or the wholesale price for mag pricing.

I appreciate your feedback. I’m going to just take your curiosity in the 2nd part as sarcasm and move on from it. Just trying to figure this uncharted territory out and would greatly appreciate some grace and understanding while I figure out what the next chapter of life is going to look like.

But yeah, here we are! Should’ve known that I would get roasted on here… well, I knew I’d get roasted. So, working to adjust pricing accordingly and hopeful that will appease the masses (but seriously, hope it is within the ballpark of appropriate around here). Appreciate you, CS!

If I had to guess, I'd bet you're not gonna get a lot of takers on the generic small park hand tools, even at 50% off + shipping.

You'll get people who are like "sweet, I can finally buy that pro wheel truing stand or set of bearing presses" but how many people on here are going to get excited about a Y-hex wrench or Park-branded pliers? There's a nice set of Bondhus hex wrenches sitting in the Beer + Shipping thread because everyone already owns a bunch of hex wrenches--If it was a set of color-coded Wera or PB Swiss, someone would have snapped those up immediately.

Actually, I might be. I have two work spaces now and while I had doubles of some tools, not everything. I can make it work but walking back and forth between the garage and shop is annoying, but not quite annoying enough to spend full retail on nice tools that I already own one of. So I've been slowly picking stuff up when I find a good deal - which 50% off Park stuff would be.

Totally get it. I'm guessing the bigger picture story here is more like; Guy struggles to keep LBS afloat. Guy finally throws in the towel because labor of love became a loveless endeavor. Guy is unemployed and sitting on thousands of dollars in inventory that's already paid for, wondering how to sell. Wondering how to maximize the more-profit:less-work ratio while motivation is at an all time low.
But maybe I'm wrong.

Ok homies. After all the feedback (which I do appreciate), I have repriced the lot for TGR specifically. Should I start a new thread since this is a “feeler” post?
