The dude movie. A movie in a movie. Trippy and fun
They probably hate you

The First Edition should have been named Kenny Rogers Roasters.

Nice pick, KQ!
I know it’s popular to say that since that movie came out but no one ever really said that prior to the Big Lebowski. They probably suffer from over saturation and that might be part of the sentiment. Mostly it’s just people trying to sound cool. You could probably substitute any popular band from the past 60 years and people would parrot the movie line.

ok who didn't get the jok 1st time round ?
The over saturation on the radio was real but I thinks Glenn’s egomania and drama is what really got eyes rolling about the group. They had some absolute bangers.
Same goes for Fleetwood, pound for pound pure bangers with a lot of dumb drama overshadowing their music.
I certainly don’t remember that sentiment being ubiquitous. I was never a fan myself but the music isn’t offensive just overplayed

I said the eagles sucked back when the eagles were popular.
Fact
Prove it, you probably sang along with the radio

I don't think the dude hates the eagles, he was just parroting something those fucking Cohen brother wrote in a script
You think?

I was the dude.
Then I grew up. And impregnated Maude. And now my life isn’t the same.
And the eagles suck.
You were never “the Dude”

Yup, the whole Eagles Hate thing is classic contrarian herd conformity.
What made the Big Lebowski scene funny is that it had not yet occurred to anyone at the time to hate the Eagles. This guy, The Dude, had been hassled and abused all day, and finally he’s in the safety of a cab, with the bland calming sound of Peaceful Easy Feeling on the radio, and then he gets kicked out; why? because, of all the things for a mellow guy like The Dude to hate, he hates one of the most inoffensive bands in the history of popular music. That’s the joke!! He seems to dislike a harmless mellow tune by the Eagles more than he has a problem having his head shoved into a toilet. If the cabbie had been playing disco, or Yoko Ono, or We Built This City, or anything truly hate-worthy, the scene would have made sense, instead of being off the wall and funny.
Mojo Nixon's "Don Henley Must Die" long predated the Big Lebowski.
I saw him do that live, I could appreciate the sentiment. Mojo was cool

Okay, I was a tad hyperbolic; hating the Eagles, pre-Lebowski, had occurred to some. And there was the whole punk movement, which broadly rejected the over-polished style that the Eagles were a fine example of.
Eh. Try listening to Peaceful Easy Feeling with fresh ears, trying to ignore that the music already lives in your head. It isn't so bad. Not groundbreaking, but not every song needs to be a Born To Run or Blitzkrieg Bop. Whatever, it was overplayed, that's all. I have no interest in listening to my Beatles albums any more, either, and the Beatles were awesome.
There's surely some truth to herd mentality. But have you ever considered that one of the reasons that joke landed so well is because there are a LOT of people (me among them) who found the Eagles pretty annoying. I never said I hate the Eagles before Lebowski, but I sure AF said I don't like the Eagles.
Heh, considered. I can't say I disliked them, but given the Eagles' enormous commercial success, I'd say they were overrated and (again) overplayed, which I admit is part of what works in the Lebowski joke.
And thanks to KQ for the OP fine cover version of a great song. Just Dropped In was part of the soundtrack for my kid's birth video, many years ago.
No one is the dude. Just using it as a metaphor for being a child free unmarried ski bum.
Fuck Springsteen. He sucks too. Talented. But can’t listen myself.
But the ramones rock.
Fair point made above about peaceful easy feeling and the irony.
In this thread, humorless dorks rush to defend the honor of the band with the best selling album of all time.
Reading comprehension fail. I wasn’t defending the Eagles I was pointing out pop culture herd mentality.

The eagles ARE pop culture herd mentality. Safe music by talented musicians. Raging against the newly commercialized world through the lens of old hippie boomer nostalgia, while simultaneously being the first to break the $100 per ticket barrier!
It was hip to hate them way before Lebowski.
From 1972:
“The music, the lyrics, and the distribution machine are all suave and synthetic. Brilliant stuff--but false.
The Eagles are the ultimate in California dreaming, a fantasy of fulfillment that has been made real only in the hip upper-middle-class suburbs of Marin County and the Los Angeles canyons.”
That doesn’t really sound like hate, it sounds like a critique. I agree with it though. The pop culture use of Big Lebowski quotes is the same. Yes I love the movie.
And again you missed the point
I would say that the Mamas and the Papas were the ultimate California Dreaming, but that’s just my opinion, man.

Your first statement
Is easily disproven.
So your remaining comment:
is that popular sentiment is directed by popular quotes, and not the other way around? It didn’t increase the hate of the eagles, it just provided a succinct method for expressing it.Quote:
You could probably substitute any popular band from the past 60 years and people would parrot the movie line.
Former Stones manager Allen Klein owns the rights to it," Burnett says. "He wanted $150,000." Burnett begged Klein to just come down and watch an early cut of Lebowski. "It got to the part where the Dude says, 'I hate the fuckin' Eagles, man!' Klein stands up and says, 'That's it, you can have the song!' That was beautiful." For the record, Burnett agrees with the Dude ("[The Eagles] sort of single-handedly destroyed that whole scene that was brewing back then," he says), but the line infuriated Glenn Frey. "I ran into [Frey] and he gave me some shit," Jeff Bridges says. "I can't remember what he said exactly, but my anus tightened a bit."
So you’re basically saying what I’m saying with more verbosity and some anecdotes. Thanks for helping

I'd rather listen to the Eagles vs watch the Big Lebowski. I don't get the infatuation with it.
