Tooele, UT

Anyone know how far this place is from good skiing? I'm trying to decide where to request my first 4 week clinical in January. Tooele is one of the sites offered. The problem is, they assign us for our first clinical, we don't really get to pick, and if I tell them to send me out of state they might send me to Nebraska or something...eek! :eek: Although, I can't exactly tell them to send me somewhere that has good skiing- they don't want to send you anywhere for "social reasons." Another site that sounds interesting is Lake Oswego OR. How far is this from good skiing? (this should tell you where my priorities lie... maybe I shouldn't be in grad school after all. :confused: )

As you can see, its just west of EastButtfuck, Utah. I'd guess an hour or so from LCC and BCC. On the upside, you'll probably get to deal with a whole lot of tweakers out in those parts.

That's funny, I took a long drive on a warm day on our last ski trip and accidently went into a little town that was chuck full of tweaked out people. It was very weird, didn't know that stuff like that was near SLC...

Ah yes....the proverbial penultimate day. :D

I'm out that way quite a bit, one of the guys that works for me lives out there as well. Not a bad commute to skiing, I-80 the whole way. Not as bad as the West side for the tweakers and such, definitely a predominantly LDS community. You might get a lot of practice doing civil emergency response since the largest chemical weapons dump is located near by. Traffic can be a problem early AM / afternoon as there are a lot of folks that commute to SLC from Tooele; Tooele is very much a growing suburban sprawl. Wendover is only another 45 minutes and the dirt biking is killer. Not bad Mountain Biking but way too hot May-Oct. I would think there are worse areas to work.

Mr. AG mentioned Wendover. Just on the border with Nevada, a small place on this earth for some gambling and whatnot.


The Buzz and Twoplanker families went there once and we had a blast. Stayed at the Rainbow (car parked in Utah, hotel in Nevada, weird) and proceed to drink and drink and drink and gamble a bit. We started at the video game Blackjack machines and put in $1. Hit penny BJ, ordered 2 Sam Adams, tipped nicley and had a new cold one in my hand every 20 minutes all night (till 2P and I could not stand anymore, so we somehow found our way to a strip dive (club).


Long story short, a great place to drink if done right. (we came out ahead, no winnings, but drinks vs. gambling money lost, still won).


And when I moved here I called it "thule" and it is "too-ill-a". Utah has weird names.

that place sucks.

Lake Oswego, OR is one of the wealthier suburbs of Portland. It's about 1.5 hrs from skiing on Hood.

I spent several weeks there one summer. Wandered around the desert by myself on a moutain bike in my spare time (not too safe), had a hotel room maid offer me weed, and got stopped in a random drug checkpoint on the highway shortly thereafter. Met a real life polygamist too. Weird, weird place. But it's not really near SLC.

Shepherd's Dairy is in Tooele... mmmm... goat cheese.... mmmmmmm

I think I'd rather live anywhere on the east side of SLC(Sandy or Sugarhouse for example) and commute to Toole for work than live in Toole. If you live in Sandy, you're literally 20 minutes away from the Bird/Alta, and 30-40 minutes from Toole.

On the east side, your neighbors won't be mulletards a meth lab in their basement and a half-assembled car parked on their lawn (distinct chance of this in Toole).

okay, this is some interesting info... btw, I did mapquest it, but that doesn't really tell you how long it actually takes to get to good skiing, good backcountry, etc., I am really not familiar with utah. It looked pretty close to SLC on the map. I don't know if I want to deal with tweaked out people though... but it could be interesting. It's for a physical therapy clinical, not nursing. I think I changed my mind though, I'm requesting to go to hawai'i so I can surf. If I can't get that, maybe I can get them to place me somewhere closer to SLC. I guess I just don't want to end up somewhere in the midwest.

Never actually skied anything there but I've spied a couple lines from work. There is even a road up to the weather/cell towers up there but I'm guessing its owned by Kennicot. Not sure about access, at least from the east side.

access can be limited by private holdings, so consult maps.
Also,
a lot of the stereotypes and such in this thread are an old view of toole, the housing projects built there in the last feew years are fairly upscale if a little cookie cutter.
and legend has it the silly name came from a New Englander who when asked about the area said, "a'yah its nice and all but a bit too hilla"

truth is its named after a UTe chief Tuilla

How many people in this thread have lived in Tooele? How many have even been there?

Just a tip for those that read this board but don't post. Sugarhouse is not the only place to live in Utah. I know that by now you must think that this is indeed the truth. But, trust me, there are other places to live.

And yeah, like Woodsy says, some of the newer developments over in Tooele are quite upscale.

The reason so many people advocate living in Sugarhouse or Cottonwood heights is a) they are young b) they like proximity to skiing, bars, and some forms of culture c) they're not "from around here", if you catch my drift. Glad you like it out West Bob, and I'm sure there are some nice spots, but the stripmall suburban development doesn't work for alot of us, I think. (shit...the only reason I tolerate Sandy is the 18 minute drive to the Alta parking lot).

You're right, there is nothing but methheads, mullets, and crime in Tooele. You may not want to venture away from Cottonwood Heights, it's dangerous out there...

I go to Tooele on a fairly regular basis. It's in between Tooele valley airport (salt lake helitack) and Vernon fire station.

I maintain it's a rootin' tootin' lds-redneck shithole.

There is a reason Tooele has the rep it does; you can still buy ranchland in Erda, or 2 miles down the road, you can spend 500k on a house in Stansbury Part, and have a great lake in your backyard. It's still a "developing" area.

If you dare to live on the Benches of Tooele, you can get a 6 bed, 5 bath, brand new house, with a killer view, for like 250k..

But best of all, there's a great tamale stand in town that sells them for a buck a piece... :rolleyes2

You want to talk about a freaky place to live...anyone ever been out there on the West Side of Utah Lake? Eagle Mountain? Saratoga Springs? Now that's a strange place.

Tooele, Dugway, Rush Lake, Ophir, Mercur, Butterfield Canyon, .... go exploring bitches, that's what life and the West are all about .... there is a helluva lot of cool stuff out there. Stay tuned this fall for the Great Oquirrh Traverse in under 24 hours - I80 to SR73 baby in one big push!!

BobMc is the ultimate xplorer though :biggrin: He should even have his own TV show on Fox at 11:00 pm on Fox with Red Baron ;) that'd be cool.

There's some really groovy looking stuff up Rose Canyon past Herriman. I'm not sure if its Fed land and how close in proximity it is to Camp Williams or fo that matter Kennicot land. But I'd bet thars some great touring back there...if you can skirt the methlabs, mullet sporting rednecks, two headed, mutated wildlife, and most dangerous of all...BobMc fending off all you meddling eastside kids!
