My wife needs some new stuff. Suggestions for:
Mid sized D handle shovel
Probe
I can't really touch and feel many of the options around here. My experience is that some products are just much better thought out than others.

Its a good classic shovel. The neck design doesn't fit in a lot of packs. I prefer the G3 AviTech.Quote:

I'm a G3 guy because their shit has just straight worked for me for a couple of decades. I'm just trying to get a feel on if anything is better which is of course subjective.
On the shovel side, the D handle is really limiting.
Hoe mode can be nice.
Still loving my old BD Guide 320 probe fwiw. I like the ones Ortovox makes too, but can't justify the cost to upgrade.

I had a Voilé then a G3 probe and a buddy gave me the new (at the time), K2 probe. That thing is wicked fast. Throw it out, pull till it clicks, done. No tightening etc. Maybe others have switched to this design? I bought a second one for my wife right after that. I also like the way it folds around the handle for storage.

Ortovox Kodiak shovel. Real D-handle, hoe mode, blade packs compactly, simple design. IMO best shovel currently on the market.
BD Evac shovel also has D and hoe, but I think the Ortovox design is better (more obvious which way you're assembling it)
Probe - have had some issues with BCA locks not locking securely. My BD works every time and the loop on the end is hudge and easy to grab. Haven't fondled a Voile, G3, Ortovox, or Mammut probe for a long time though so don't know how their current offerings are.
Also, I'd like to go on the record saying the BD Deploy shovel is a piece of shit. It doesn't pack small and it doesn't extend far enough to get any leverage. It deploys about 2s faster than a normal shovel and then sucks at shoveling. It should be relegated to digging out cars.

Personally, I have my gloves on leashes and taken then on and off multiple times during a rescue simulation. For example, unzip jackets, switch beacon to search, call 911. All that shit is done with my gloves off. Shoveling, that is done with gloves on. I'm guessing the same can be done with mittens.
Are you going as far as to say "You can't travel safely in the backcountry while wearing mittens?"

My old/backup shovel is a G3 Avitech. Still solid. Circa 2005 it was between that and the T6 Telepro.
New shovel as of two seasons ago is a BD Evac 7. Compared to the G3, it has hoe mode and I like the slightly rubberized d-handle (versus straight plastic on the G3) and the shape of the shaft preventing twisting for faster lengthening. Blade strength/stiffness seems to be about the same based on my observations. Shaft on the BD doesn't seem quite as beefy as the G3, but no idea if that means anything.
Probe is similar. Have an old G3 320cm probe. Solid. Strong. But with the slower-deploying twist mechanism to lock it. Newer probe is is a BD Quickdraw Carbon 320cm. I like the lock mechanism better. Seems as strong as the G3.
Another vote for ortovox kodiak. Blade not quite as big as my old voile, but packs so much better. Also experience the same issue with snow plugging up the hoe vs shovel openings, but it hasn’t overly frustrated me on any exercise yet.
Thanks dudes. The BD and Ortovox look perpect. I'll ask my wife to see which one coordinates with her mittens.
Whatever shovel you get, make sure it doesn't have a neck, otherwise will be a pain in the ass to put in your pack.

G3 avitec is a great choice, my choice. Ortovox, Mammut and BCA have some great choices too.
Ortovox did a study showing biggest is not always best for blades, but small sucks. There is an optimal size for most.
Mammut is on board with UIAA 156, takes some of the guesswork out of choosing a trustworthy shovel. http://www.mammutavalanchesafety.com...s-new.html?m=1

BCA shovels have offset handles that work fine with mittens and blades with no necks for packability (and strength). Worth a look.

I like the g3 blade. No stats but probably the strongest. D handle and I like the flatter blade both for a pack or pit.
Long probe and bd and g3 seem to secure fast. Haven’t look at others recently though
Now I know what the zipper to flare out the cuff on my pants is for.

I like my BD Evac 7 Shovel. Good quality and moves a lot of snow fast, that’s what you really want in an rescue situation. D handle and has offset so you don’t kill your back digging pits.
