Build my new bike!

I just purchased a Intense Uzzi-SL frame and am now getting ready to build it up. I am 5'10 165LBs and want a ride that is a killer trail bike, I.E. Im not going to ride Whistler everyday, and I want to beable to ride uphill in some comfort. List what componets you would spec. And finally, where is the best place to order stuff on-line? I plan ot support the local shop as much as possible, but I cant justify spending a lot of extra $$$ to do so.

Here is what I have decided on so far:

Chris King Headset
Hays discs brakes model???
Sram X-0 rear derealier
Sram X-0 Shifters

So what would you choose for everything else?

Ney on the Hayes, go Avid Juicy 7 and how about a Sherman up front.

Juicy 7 rotors tend to be all squealy. Get the classic Avid stainless rotors, not the wavys.

How 'bout the Fox 36 up front.

Sram also makes trigger shifters :)

The Fox 36 is VERY sweet but if you can get a deal on a Sherman, they work great. I have one on my AS-X and want to replace it but really have no reason to (except that the Fox is way sexier). Maybe a Hadley hub / Mavic wheel build unless you find a deal on a set of pre-built wheels. One thing to consider is the axle on the rear hub. I recently switched to a 12mm thru-axle on the rear and really like the added rigidity. You may need a 12mm -10mm step down axle but they are worth it (Azonic, Specialized and Atom Lab all make one). I recently put a Holzfeller internal BB in but would rather have one of the newer external bearing BB's /crank combo. The Shimano XT's are sweet and could save you some money (although, all the major brands are getting very competitive and make great stuff). Take a look at the pro-taper bars, light but burley (use ODI lock-on's for sure up in your neck of the woods). Nice choice on a frame, you are going to love it. Build it right and you will have one very good "do-it-all" bike.

Doesn't anyone think that a fork maxing out at 6" might be a bit much for a 4.5" frame? We are talking the old four bar Uzzi SL here, right? Not the SLX, or the new VPX? You can switch out the rocker plates though to get more travel in the back.

If you are keeping it at 4.5" in the back I would look at the shorter travel Marz AM1 or SL, or Manitou Nixon. Something around 5" to keep it balanced. Even a RS Pike.

I am actually trying to find some rocker plates for it, anyone know where to get them? I dont mind having a bit more travel in the front, since I feal that the front shock abosrobs most of the tuff on the trail anyways...........

Know anyone with a CNC mill and someone with the longer travel plates to copy?

A 6" fork should be OK, I was just thinking it may just make the bike feel a little funky until you balance out the suspension.

XT cranks are sweet. Get some Crossmax XL disc wheels. They're pimpin'.

Jensonusa.com has 6" sherman flicks for $290. I bought one and so far I'm loving it, but the stock springs are way soft. I'd say anyone over 160lbs will need stiffer springs. It's wuite a bit cheaper than other shops and tons cheaper than the 36. I'd also check out the rock shox pike series.

I've heard there is a noticeable shifting difference between the two.

If you get platform pedals get the Azonic A-frame.

For handlebars the Raceface Diabolus is strong as hell and pretty cheap.

E.13 chainguide

Fork:
Shermans are nice and burley but heavy. An old Fox Vanilla 125 are pretty sweet, light and quite durable although not as much as the shermans.

Brakes:
Avid Juicy's or the new hayes El Caminos ($$). Hydros are awesome up until the point that you have to bleed them. Easy bleed = happier amper.

Cranks:
Truvativ or Shimano. Sorry, but others are not yet competing in terms of quality and durability. Shimano still holds the fort on this one thing.

Drievtrain
SRAM. The only question is whether you go X.0 or X.9. The X.0 is bling and apparently there is a difference in performance over the 9 (2nd hand info though so don't quote me).

Post
Thompson. The only post I trust since it is the only post I have never bent or broken in 15 years of mtn biking. Worth the money.

Saddle
WHatever fits and is comfy. I put an old road Flite on my bike and I love it however everybody is different. I hated the flite on my road bike funny enough.

Stem
I am partial to the FUNN's, I ahve a serial Grippa and a serial Killa. Grippa is not too short and can be flipped for a bit of versatility. Killa is for going down.

Bars
I just buy the thickest heaviest burliest bars out there because that extra weight is better than having to get a new set of chicklets.

Grips
ODI lock ons. Done deal. I prefer the Oury grips since I have larger hands

Wheelset
Mavic crossmax are nice but spendy. I have a lot of friends that have had luck with Alex rims. A more expensice but nicer option are the Intense Mag 30's. Hubs: Hadley are nice but $$$. Buy a wheelset instead of building them up, to save money (unless you ahve a buddy who is a master builder).

You are going to blow the rims if you are going to be dropping stuff so resign yourself to it.

Chainguide:
E13

Make sure you check the rear wheel spacing and axle diameter to ensure compatability. Figure out chainline (BB width) BEFORE you buy.

From what I have heard XO is noticably better shifting than X9. As for wheels, Ive been looking at the Chris king hubs but they are $$$$ and I am defintly going to do my best to avoid putting any shimano crap on there, so I may go with truative, especially since the ISIS drive is superior to shimano's.

I got a killer deal on the frame so I got a decent budget to blow on some high quality parts that will last :)

Just FYI, I've seen quite a few more trashed Truvativ Cranks/BBs than Shimano. Actually, I can't say that see I've seen a trashed Shimano Octalink crank or BB (bearings not included).

Yeah, at least check out the new XT's first. Super durable, fair pricing compared to others, very sweet.

I forgot to add but others have already said it; e13. The best thing I did for my bike.

I loved my crossmax wheelset until i broke the rear hub. only to find out that mavic hubs SUCK, as i started asking around.

chris king hubs are $$$ and I have never spoken to a wheelbuilder who believes they are worth the extra cash. Most i have asked really like the DT hubs.

However, go with some nice beefy trail/freeride mavic rims, like the 3.1 or whatever they are called this year, go tubeless (let's not start this debate again.....just do it ;) ).

go with X0 and definitely go grip shift.

Yeah, I've seen more trashed TruVativ cranks than anything else but Ed at SRAM will take care of it right if your local shop whines correctly. I've never had a problem with Race Face but they are kinda pricey. The Nixon would be a good bet if you can't get the longer travel out of the rear. Wheels: You're going to trash whatever you get so don't spend too much and don't go with something that uses proprietary spokes or is a pain in the ass to build (like Mavic cross series stuff).

I replaced an X0 with an X9 and have not noticed any difference.

yet another vote for the XT holowtech II crankset... ~$180 on ebay, new Buy it Now price (vs. 250 in stores).

For those who were bagging on SRAM... do you own stock in Shimano or something? SRAM kicks ass in my book, have been riding various components for about 5 years now, absolutely no complaints. Very cool to have a choice in what used to be a complete monopoly for drivetrain.

Wheels... hmmm. probably worth spending a little here. I would go for a bomber light and serviceable hubset like CK and build up with a stock Mavic rim, only decision left is 32 vs 36 hole, which would depend on how agressive you are.

Even if X0 shows a shifting advantage over the X.9 (which I have not heard, but maybe it's true,) would you say the X0 shifts twice as well as the X.9? Because that's the price difference.

Maybe you're looking for more of a killer trail ride that won't get abused much, but for something that vulnerable, spending that much money seems crazy. To me, it's the difference between XT and XTR. I think X0 is the carbon fiber Salomon Pilot System of mountain biking.

Full disclosure: I'm not a SRAM hater by any means. I'm actually swapping the stock Shimano front/rear drivetrain stuff off my new ASX and buying X.9 rear derailleur, Gen-X front derailleur and X7/9 shifters from www.jensonusa.com or www.pricepoint.com .

The bike I have been riding is a full XTR Intense Tracer, so I want my new ride to be set up at least as good as that if not better :)

I want this ride to be fairly tricked out, but Im not going to get crazy with buying titanium bolts and shit.

I know a guy that rides primarily fr/dh, he's got an X9 on one bike and an XO on the other. I quizzed him on the Ti spring, etc. but he claims he's never noticed a difference in the performance between the two, been very happy with both.

Unless you can get a sweet deal on an XO (ebay, friends, etc.) I think Phunk is right... go with the X9 so you don't cry when you blow your deraillier.

I bet you ten bucks the X.9 shifts as well as, or better than, your XTR. I'm going to drop it now because you're going to love the ride either way. Post pics when it's built fool!

And I second the suggestion for the Fox Vanilla RC 125. Great fork for half of what the 36 costs.

I've been beating down on a Truvativ Crank/BB for about 3 years on my Bullit and have had no problems.

I've been abusing even worse an XT front/rear hubset on my hardtail and they are still rolling nicely. Tough choice. Kings are nice, but maybe a bit too spendy. Rims? Kinda heavy, but I've been impressed with the Atom Labs Trail Pimps.

CS, why the hell not on the grip shift??? :confused: i friggin love the grip shift. so far everything about it is better than any other system i have used.

yes, i would agree that x9 will probably shift better than xtr. now that i have gone sram it will take alot to get me to go back to shimano.

Just preference I guess. I can't stand grip shifts. But I do agree that SRAM is superior to Shimano.

I went from XTR to X.9, and have never looked back. Even with a split rear hanger, my X.9 still shifted fairly well. I couldn't say that about XTR on a perfect bike. My X.9 setup has been absolutely flawless. I've never ridden X.0, so I can't compare. But I will tell you that X.9 is kickyourmominthehead sweet, and you'll be perfectly happy with it.

As for cranks, my XT Hollowtech II cranks have taken a serious beating and they're still going strong. Just get rid of the 44. I've beat mine all to hell and will be replacing it with a 38 this week. Or you could just replace it with a bash guard. I'm going with the 38 cause I still use the big ring occasionally. But I use it so infrequently, I'd much rather have the extra ground clearance. A 44 is overkill. All it's good for is getting caught on stuff. I would give you the same advice for any triple, they all come with 44s I think.

I find it hard to believe that a 'perfect bike' had shifting issues with XTR drivetrain. Sounds like an isolated incident to me.

Not hating on SRAM, but XTR is no slouch at all.

I dunno, after ussing XTR I am defintly not a huge shimano supporter anymore, and like I said before I might even go out of my way to avoid buying anything from them..... Im all for the small guy especially when they make a better componet at a lower price....

As far as upside down forks go, Im not to stoked on that Idea, I dont see them lasting as long in my neck of the woods.

Race face is defintly an option, I have lots of friends that seem to love em.

Rohloff hub. I want one.

Edit: Oh, and the Avalanche fork WOULD last a long time, from what I've heard. It's beastly, and weighs close to a gazillion pounds.
