Vibes to friends and family!

Fuck, that sucks. Vibes to the Tahoe community.
I blame ksl for being too cheap to install more gazex and automated bomb systems.
They know where the slides happen, and they could cover them without putting the patrollers lifes at risk.
Wasn't a slide but an accident with a hand charge. At least that's what I've heard from three separate sources. Or hand charge caused the slide and he went with it. :-(
Blaming KSL for this is stupid. Squaw has like 300 slide paths... you can't put gazex everywhere. And reportedly this happened on mainline where they just installed 2 gazex's this summer.
You cannot automate all of the slide paths at Squaw. That's just a ridiculous statement. Any patrollers feel free to jump in here...
You know what- there are friends and family watching this right now.
We need to cut the bs finger pointing until the facts are in, let these guys mourn and do their job.
There always has to be a quarterback who never lost a game on Monday.

Sorry to hear this. Condolences to the patroller's family and friends, the local ski community, and the ski patrol community at large. Seems like a dangerous job to me and I appreciate very much what they do. RIP
Ah fuck! This sucks hard. RIP

This sucks. Joe taught my OEC class when I started as a patroller at WP. I didn't know him that well, but he was a great guy. His loss will stretch far beyond Squaw.
RIP Righteous Joe Zuiches

Just awful.
Condolences to his friends, family and Squaw skiers.
Terrible news.
As someone who was directly involved with a similar type of accident a little over 20 years ago, please keep the armchair QB-ing and criticisms to a minimum until the facts are known.
Vibes to the Squaw/AM families.
Sierra Sun has some videos posted of the press conference. http://www.sierrasun.com/news/fatal-...aves-one-dead/
just awful :(
TahoeJ: Sierra Sun is reporting what you heard earlier about it being explosive related: http://www.sierrasun.com/news/fatal-...aves-one-dead/
Horrible. I thought that name looked familiar and 'roos verified. RIP.
RIP. Condolences to his family and friends. A special thanks to all of the patrollers for the hard and dangerous work they do on a day to day basis to let us enjoy the mountains.
:(
This is the only picture I have of Joe. He's on the left, heading out to bomb the Cirque at Winter Park in 2006.

He was built like a ski racer. He skied on Atomics. He was always friendly and never an asshole to the FNGs. He fly fished a little but we never talked about it. After he left the valley I know he taught English in South America for a while before settling in CA. He still has a lot of friends here. I didn't know he had a wife and baby.
For the trollers out there that work in this industry...are you guys using MDI w/ time fuse or using nonel? Vibes to the family.
A separate thread about Avie control would be more appropriate
Right on. Hopefully a report comes out with details.
+++ vibes and heart felt condolences to Joe's friends, family and co-workers.
Hey, would be nice to edit the title of this thread. it is inaccurate and reads a bit insensitive.
Condolences to family and friends. I feel for his partner and baby.
I had a Squaw pass last year for the first time (new to California). One look at it and you can see that it's serious business to patrol and keep safe. I was so sorry to hear about this. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.
I'm not skiing Squaw this year, but I'll thank patrollers wherever I see them. I'm sure all of them in Tahoe are feeling this. Sobering after all the exuberance over the great snow this month.
Did squaw contribute to the fund?
It would be horrible if they didn't, for an employee that died while working.
RIP Joe
I would assume that his wife and child would be elgible for a workman's compensation death benefit--I believe professional (but not volunteer) patrollers are covered, and of course KSL pays the premiums. The amount would be at least 250K I believe. Maybe someone knows more about this than I do (actually Google). It's very sad to realize that a patroller is worth more dead than alive. Has to be one of the the most underpaid jobs in America.
Such a tragedy. Vibes to the Tahoe community and family.
