Probably lots of good places to view it from, but what stuck out to me right away is that Jackson, WY is right in the path. So the question is who's going to host the TGR viewing party? :)

I have a friend that is already planning a big gathering in Jackson and taking the tram up. As I understand it hotels, etc will fill fast in that area. If you are thinking about it now is the time to book. Im probably headed up with the group. Probably camp though.
Article from last wks local paper about the prep for it. Sounds like things are pretty booked and they are expecting an additional 40k people in town for it. Damn!

I'd host a party but also thinking of being on top of one of the peaks for this depending on weather. We sit on our roof a lot for star gazing though so could probably support a decent # of mags
Being on a mtn top has its advantages during a solar eclipse. The high the better. The last eclipse I saw was when I was in middle school. It was a bright sunny day until the eclipse started. The sudden dip in solar heating caused the atmosphere to cool and low level clouds to form obscuring much of the eclipse.
My tentative plan has been somewhere in the LRR. There used to be a great, super detailed and huge map of the path, including total and mostly total areas, duration and time of eclipse. Very cool that it will touch both coasts!
Salem Oregon is right in the path. Bend is just outside. Drive 20 miles north and you're in the zone of totality. That would be a pretty good bet with the dry climate. Sun Valley is very close, too, but not the direct hit Jackson has.
Isn't the super-volcano scheduled to blow then too?

I just booked a condo in Oregon to be safe. This is going to be a "you snooze, you lose" kind of thing. I checked Bend and it's already 95% booked. I saw a Day's Inn or something with a room for $600+ per night.
Was just talking with my buddy about this. Was going to try and pull a Wyoming trip together and then he mentioned that his girlfriends mom already rented a house in Bend. Tentative plan now is to climb Jefferson for it, which is just off the center line.Quote:

I was thinking about just driving down to the Menan Butte and watching it from there if it's not cloudy. My house is about 30 miles too far north for perfect viewing.

I'm figuring on BLM land in eastern Oregon, for a combination of wide open spaces (with no reservations required) and high chance of clear skies. I've seen three totals, only one of them entirely unobscured by clouds (but all worth the trip).
In my opinion, the most magical part of the experience is the few seconds before totality, just as the door is closing. However, a partial doesn't nearly get you there; was underwhelmed by the annular a couple of years ago. Anyway, be sure to get your ass out to this thing next summer.

The news the other night was reporting the Yellowstone and Teton region is already at 100% capacity for the eclipse. Friends couldn't find any lodging in Idaho Falls either. Last I heard they were looking at the Sun Valley area and planning on driving over for the eclipse.
