Should I try to go back to my old firm?

I recently left my employer of 7.5 years about 3 months ago. Since I left, 4 other mid-level civil engineers left the company too. The civil engineering section of this smallish environmental/civil firm has been obliterated. They are only left with a few junior staff and the retarded senior level engineers (why people left).

I am thinking that they must be hurting right now. I am pondering offering my services for a much higher rate. Where I work now is cool and all, but the commute sucks all life from my body.

Good point. But I made it work for 7.5 years...if I could get 30% more in salary and an office, I think it would smooth my feathers. I have some really good friends there too. I have to really think about putting my resume in and that is why I ask my esteemed fellow maggots their opinions.

I left for a 10% raise and an office with window, but I now drive 1.5 - 2 hours per day (not ok in my book).

Any HR director that would hire you is an ass, and I wouldn't work for an ass.

I have a simple HR policy...I don't rehire people who left. You left because you felt you could do better elsewhere, fine, I would not want you back. I don't know what the availability of civil engineers is, but with the current unemployment levels in the country I would imagine I could find somebody with loyalty.

How many times have you and your whatever broken up and gotten back together?

I have a really bad taste in my mouth regarding my old firm. I know they are in a pickle right now and I take pleasure in that. That will have to be enough.

If things are so bad there now that everyone has jumped ship perhaps .... perhaps the powers that be will look at the situation and get rid of the senior asshole and if they do that would be when you would want to go back.

Agree with post #15, above. You bailed for a 10% raise and a 1.5 hour commute. Guess what? Your old place must have sucked if you made that choice. Move on to the next better place and get a 20% raise next time.

Really? What if they were a good employee, valuable even, and they left to follow a spouse but the spouses' job didn't work out and they moved back to the area. Would you consider it then?

I guess she made them change the name of the "Summer Picnic" to "Bar-b-que" sighting an urban legend (she doesn't know it's a UL and no one thought to check it out or were too afraid to challenge her for fear of legal repercussion brought by her).

News flash: circumstances sometimes change.

I've seen attorneys rejoin firms after years of absence. It appears from my viewpoint to usually work out, maybe because each side has much more info to form realistic expectations.

As I have often said, the key to happiness is low overhead and low expectations.

Oh I understand that. it just seems that three months isn't much time for big changes that would make him happier there. Except the shorter commute. Of course I have barely more than zero interviewing and hiring experience on either side of the process so my suggestion may not be worth much.

I went back after maybe 6-8 weeks , can't remember exact number of weeks. Was offered a signing bonus to go back, $20k back in 1998. Left to go out west about 18 months after I started again. Call me a bastard.
