You're probably fine. If it's a super wet spring, they might be messy. The high stuff could potentially still have some snow (especially in early June), but I would guess that most of the lower elevation stuff will be good to go.

Hey all. Sick of mud season in bozeman and was wondering about current conditions of trails in Fernie. Worth making the trip? Whitefish/Kalispell info would be nice as well. Thanks in advance.
Whitefish / Kalispell is mostly good to go. The higher elevation alpine trails are still under snow, but the low and mid elevation stuff is fine. Haven't been up to Fernie yet this year, but I'm almost certain that they're in the same boat - only the highest stuff will still have snow.
reports on pink bike say Fernie is in prime shape.
Just rode Fernie on the weekend, its in awesome shape. hero dirt all around. some locals out skiing high on the resort, but project 9 was clear all the way to the top.Quote:

It's been a while since I've ridden in Fernie, but from what I remember there is some great riding up there. Our trip was guided with Fernie Fat Tire Adventures, not sure if Kimmy and Andrew are still around, but they were great and the house we stayed in with them was also awesome.

1) Up lazy lizard, lap on P9, up to island lake lodge for lunch and back down
2) Up hypervent, down southern comfort
3) Up and lap man cow
and go to happy cow icecream Its SOOO worth it

I've heard good things about the Diggler.
Diggler is rad, and legitimately rowdy.
My fernie favorites, in order:
Slunt to brokeback
Verboten
Project 9
Hyperventilation to hyperextension
Big money
Diggler would be on the list, but it's a pain to get up to and kinda in a different category (it's better on a dh bike)
Verboten and p9 are usually hit as 1 ride. Tack on slunt to that if you can handle a lot of vert.
Most of the trails in fernie are good, so there's plenty of other worthwhile stuff.

You cant go wrong in Fernie, if you have low expectations, it will blow your hair back. I was just there in late june, and it was amazing, P9, Big $$, Erics Trip, Red Sonja, and probably everything that has been mentioned. Go explore and enjoy the awesomeness!
Just finishing up my week in Fernie and did a ton of riding. I got quite a few of the longer trails:
Big Money
Slunt-Brokeback
Stupid Traverse-Stumpy-P9
Diggler
Swine Flu
Three Kings
Southern Comfort
Contra (new machine-built flow trail)
It’s all sweet. I think Big Money was my winner, followed by Slunt-Brokeback and P9 (so fast and tacky!). There’s also Faceshots, a shorter trail that was maybe my favourite section of trail I rode (steep with catch berms so you can fly!)
Diggler on my AM bike was not a problem. It’s steep and rowdy at the top, but nothing where you feel like you’re going to die. The coal chutes are unique.
A week in Fernie is definitely not too long. What a great spot!

We used to go to several times a year and had a good feel for the trails but with kids it has been probably 5 years, so looking forward to seeing what is new!

I would shoot for that ride on Saturday and see were you stand. You're from BC so you should be use to the steep climbs and may want some more... If so I would head across the Valley and do uprooted to Hyper Ventilation to Hyper extension to roots resurrected. Ridgemont has some fun trails too but its way harder to navigate over there. There are some newer trails I am not super in tune with that the locals can chime in with Im sure.Quote:

Toast’s loop is great. I was back last year and did it. It ended up being about 1300 m of climbing, so not tiny. If I had to leave one of the 3 laps out, it would be Verboten, but all 3 are great descents. The climb to Slunt is a bit of a slog but quite worth it.
The year before, my favourite was Big Money. It was being logged at the bottom when I was back last year so I didn’t get to ride it again.
Hypervent/Hyperextension is a fun lap as well, but I’d prioritize Toast’s ride over it.
Where to start? We are the host for the Dirt series although they have implemented some covid guidelines so may not see the feeding frenzy of the previous years. All the recommendations so far are good. Come by the store, I'm usually here. I am rehabbing a knee so may be out riding if the rain lets up though.
Oh that’s funny, my wife is one of the volunteer coaches and she said she has to come by your shop on Saturday morning. I guess I stop by too.
Gonna be in Fernie for a day (my first) of riding in a couple weeks while visiting the in-laws in Cranbrook. Last summer I did Bootleg in Kimberley which was great but I am determined to get to Fernie this year. Is the above loop running well these days? Was planning on hitting that. For trails in fernie, 6 more days is a new one that's pretty fun. Worth doing. It's on trailforks - it's in the south castle zone off hyper extension.
For camping in both fernie and Nelson, there's not a ton that I've found that's particularly close to town. In fernie, there are some options out cokato road, past the diggler / 3 kings trailhead. They're not particularly good camping spots though.
In nelson, there are some options up gold creek road, on the way up to goldmember. I've also seen people camp around the top of morning sickness up in the north shore network.
For both fernie and Nelson, I usually end up paying for the provincial park these days, but I might just be getting soft with age.

Solid beta, thanks Toast. Yeah I looked at the Fernie provincial park and will probably just pay for a site. With the currency exchange it’s like $22/night.
Yeah, it's a nice campground with great access to some of the best trails in town. Just be aware that it books up. Most of the sites require reservations, but there are some that are first come, first serve. Same goes for nelson, although nelson is a bigger campground so it's a little easier to get a site.Quote:

Depending on guerrilla your camping arrangement/attitude is, if you drive out Coal Creek Rd past the rod and gun club range you can pretty much setup off the road on any clear space. Not the snowmobile marshalling area but grassy verges and meadows are fair game (as you will be as it's very beary out here right now).
No promises but if you PM me before you arrive I may have a bed available.
Took some advice from earlier in the thread and enjoyed a P-9/S-Bomb->Brokeback day this week. Fun riding, I'll be back!
