Anybody use a Tenkara set-up? this could be this summers rod
never tried it but every person I've ever run into on the water using one seems pretty damn frustrated
I was going to but then I decided to take up rollerblading.
old shit in a shiny new paper bag.
In all seriousness it kinda makes sense for small streams and backpacking to stay minimal or for extreme beginners. Zero versatility and it takes the casting fun out of fly fishing. Back when it first started blowing up I was bumming around Japan and every fly shop I popped into scoffed at the whole "resurgence". I'll take a normal rig any day.
hey, i just got my patagonia fishing catalogue too -- we're samies!
no casting? WTF am I supposed to do for hours? It's not like I catch any fish. I would need more beer.
^^^ what snapt said. I really don't think my little 3wt is going to kill me in a backpack (the half gallon of whiskey is another story). And way more versatile and fun then that Huck Finn stick. My friend bought one. Used it for about 3 hours, threw it back in his truck and said, "Well that was fucking stupid."
I guess most people don't start fishing with a cane pole and bobber anymore? didn't take long fishing with that to see the limitations. even on a lake with tons of stupid sunnies. A folding graphite rod doesn't change that and fly gear is pretty lightweight as it is.
but I'm sure Patagonia'll shift a ton. And there'll be a special on them in the fall.
I have to admit I just looked up tenkara as I have never heard of it - looks to be just a rod without a reel? Wouldn't this be frustrating as all hell?
I was at a local outdoor show and noticed a Tenkara demonstration going on. I took one step towards it, then was like " I'm not gay!" and went to the beer garden.
I have one. It's good for small stream (sometimes) and pocket-water fishing. Otherwise I stick to the western gear.
I don't know what it's supposed to be, really. It just works better in certain situations. You can get some long drifts in weird places that are a lot harder to get with a "normal" fly rod. I think it's got a place in a quiver. A lot of guys prefer it to western flyfishing because of the simplicity, but I just think it's another tool.
definately a quiver rod
for those who think
screaming drag and into the backing fish
are overated
It's my grab n go car rod for the super small creeks around my house, but that's about it. I've been known to fuck around w it on Mtn bike rides as well.
Tenkara: Japanese for "fly fishing for D bag hipsters?"
Seriously reels weigh nothing
A "tenkara" rod is well worth $10:

Is this like the tele skiing of fishing?
I thought fly fishing was the tele skiing of fishing.
"The lesson we learn from fishing with a tenkara rod is that we shouldn't fear that a simpler life will be an impoverished life. Rather, simplicity leads to a richer and more satisfying way of fishing - and more importantly, living"
-Yvon Chouinard
Digging the tenkara rod on the lake, not so much on the river.

Patagonia has kits for sale with tenkara rod, simple fly fishing book, fly box, flies etc. Makes for a nice gift for someone getting into fishing..
I've met bums on the corner who have more dignity. you killin' it bro!
Yeah, bumping this ol thread.
Did a short hike on a small Blue Ridge creek yesterday. Took my wife and kid and strapped my rods to my daypack.
Being with an impatient 6yo, by the time we got to where we were going, I didn't feel it was even worth stringing up my 3wt. I knew w wouldn't have been there very long. Ended up seeing a couple of guys hiking down, one had a tenkara rod hanging from his vest.
I have to say, that looked appealing.
2yrs later, has anyone bought one of these silly things? I'd want the real compact one that Tenkararodco sells, but I'm not sure I like the $250 price tag.
i'm still gonna pass on hipster neckbeard fishing for palm of handers
and pursue n pray for being taken deep into the backing for takes both handers
bwwwaaahh misssed this
fuck you your spam and yvon

I assure you, there are no fish in this small Blue Ridge mtn stream that would take you to the backing. One of the guys I spoke to had caught a 7-8" bow. And that's a trophy on this kind of water.

theres a cool film where the scott bro goes to grasshopper tenkara training from the master
and refuses to heed the master wisdom regarding the red cap
probably cause it throws a faster loop
for $250 better come with a designer flat brim hat

I am kind of amazed that I hadn't posted a snarky comment in this thread.
Here it comes:
Fucking. Gay.
Tenkara actually can be used for most types of casts, but on streams the real advantage is the line control, relative to western gear. Sort of like tight line nymphing for all sorts of flies. But if you aren't on a small brook, in many cases people are going to want to get away from the rods labelled Tenkara rods. They are a disadvantage on lakes.
