I had the honour of spending a week back in February with Scot Schmidt. The guy is awesome! Thought the folks here might appreciate this one.

was just about to post this.
been loving this seasons fst but this just takes it to a new level for me.
I remember seeing Blizzard for the first time when I went to MHSSC. Used to watch it every chance we got. Movie changed my view on skiing. Funny that I just received my Blizzard poster yesterday signed by Stump. Can't wait to frame it and put it on my bathroom wall.
respect.
Watched it this morning. It really hit home I absolutely idolized him growing up. Great job.
Warren Miller's Ski Time was the first ski movie I ever saw, on a day home sick from elementary school. I still remember Miller's deadpan narration: "Scot Schmidt, his parents raised him...wrong." I made my Dad make a copy of it on VHS.
Awesome again Mike. Thanks for putting these together.
"At 52 years old can Scott Schmidt rip it like he used to?"
Yup
At 42 years old can Mike Douglas rip it like he used to?
Yup.
Great work Mike. Your an inspiration to us too!
My buddy and I watched a VHS copy on BlizofAhhhhs( 300ish+ times) until it exploded taking the tape deck with it.
Love that guy.
"Can he?"
Oh yes he most certainly can :)
The epitome of growing old(er) gracefully.
Fabulous Mike. Many thanks.
52 yrs young and sending it. My all time favorite ski hero.
Awesome. I think almost everyone in my generation of skiers tried to emulate his style in the air on on the snow. I've still got all those pullout posters of him from Powder on my wall in the gear room downstairs. Great vid Mike!
Thanks Mike,
Schmidt is a childhood idol of mine. So good to see him again.
Plake SFTV next?
Shit if it wasn't for Mike D I wouldn't be a skier.
Seriously... The New Canadian Air Force changed my life with the twin tip ski!
(Blizzard of Ahhs came out the year I was born)
Definitely was an influence for me, along with Hattrup, Plake and Jungst.
Growing up I wanted to be Scott Schmidt so badly. Now that I see what he's up to in his 50's, living the slope side cabin life and crushing it every day, I want to be him even more.
Nice work, MikeD
Going into the US Ski Hall of Fame next year!
awesome. what a dude.
Many thanks miked for the best ski movie short of this season. You & Scot brought me to the edge of tears. I love your work.
PS - is Scot Schmidt the "haus bro" @ Yellowstone Club or something? What a cool position he seems to have. Oh and nice one second cameo there from Warren by the way!
Thank you Mike!!!!
My only gripe about the film.... Too short (and I am not in it:) )
You guys ROCK!
The Legends still kill it. Awesome that Schmidt, Hattrup, and Plake still ski and ski hard with passion.
Thanks guys! I'm happy to see you liked what we put together. Not always easy to do an icon like Scot justice.

Most excellent. Out of all of those guys, Schmidt was the one I admired the most and wanted to emulate, just so fluid and dynamic. Watching the current footage of him ripping around, yeah I want to go ski with Schmidt.
Great interview and to see him doing well. I know this will date me, but I still have his films on Beta...!
Mike. you did him justice for sure. One of the all time greats . Thanks for posting.
BRAVO TONTON!!!
Skiing hardpack at Mad River and Stowe in the late 80s kept me sane. Schmidt, Plake Hattrup et. al. kept me stoked, wound up tighter than an 8 day clock.
My girlfriend at the time.Quote:
You're watching that again!?!?
Awesome.
I met Scot Schmidt at a north face poster signing in the Bay Area. when he asked my where my poster was I asked him if he would sign my car instead. He grinned, followed me out to the parking lot and proceeded to scrawl "NEVER DIE! -- SCOT SCHMIDT" on the hood of my '81 Subaru DL wagon with a massive black permanent marker I had brought for the occasion. The car was eventually purchased for $500 cash from a guy in AK, who after taking possession of the car (with 190k miles on it) drove it to South America and then all the way back to Homer AK.
^ Cool story, bro! (seriously)
Mike D, that was awesome! "Never Die"
So great. Used to dress up in my ski gear, step into my skis, then slide them underneath my couch on hot august days and watch Blizzard of Aaaahhhhhs.
You see Plake occasionally, Hattrup is still around, Pehota seems to have stepped back but pops out once in a while - Schmidt just disappeared though, always wondered if he got burned out or what. Loved watching this, he was a serious impact on my life.
Great piece on a great skier. Loved that shot of his Sportsmobile in front of the log cabin. KIR, well okay it is the Yellowstone club :-).
Great piece Mike D . Scot Schmidt is sweet .
that was inspirational.
thanks, mike d!
blizzard was THE reason i moved to tahoe.
so stoked to see schmidt is still living and loving the life!
and chaka... that's an incredible story.
I love the comments here that praise him for still ripping and sending it at age 52. That was 2014. I wonder what toll the culmination of all those years, and especially the past 8 years has had on his body, skiing style and outlook. While I am no SS, or even close, I know that the past 8 years have had a huge toll of my body and mind when it comes to how big and fast I am skiing.
The guy is a legend, probably my favorite skier of all-time, and I wonder whether he is aging like us mere mortals?
He’s chilling by the fire at the Yellowstone club sipping brandy with billionaires.
I’m sure he’s all good.
Meh on Blizzard of Ahhhs and Schmidt. Dude was ripping Squaw to pieces early 80's in Warren Miller flicks that I destroyed in my VCR. Yeah, Warren wasn't credited for much, but he certainly presented Schmidt to the skiing world before Blizzard.
Not sure how much any of that matters. Segments were good in both films.
Warrens films were groundbreaking and so we're Stumps.
Credit to both!
This ^^^
To me, Schmidt's appearance in 'Ski Time' in 1983 is the beginning of the freeskiing movement - jumping the Palisades on 223cm 910s ;
it is my understanding Stump's videos changed the market - for video and the skiers...
There is a big generation between Warren Miller and GregStump - and a shorter generation between those of us who got to see the year's ski film one weekend a year, and those who watched ski videos though your teens. . .
it is my understanding Scot Schmidt went surfing - for a long time... ( a decade. raised a couple of kids is my understanding )
the man is exceptionally fit. I doubt he has aged at a 'normal' chronologic rate --
mostly, Thank you, ScotSchmidt.
with great Respect. skiJ
