Wasatch Conditions 13/14

Figure we should start the OFFICIAL thread since winter is here. Since it's the OFFICIAL thread there will be no CUNTING allowed. :rolleyes:

Post your backcountry observations, trip reports, and anything else that has to do with the Wasatch Backcountry.

Found some nice turns above 10k N-NE facing yesterday 10/31. Still lots of facets to the ground on high N, but snow wasn't moving. 24" of creamy consolidated pow, but it started riming on the way out at 7pm.

skied wildcat ridge on oct 31 and nov 1!!!! plunder!!! snow was between 14' and 30"!!! the pic shows a slide on baldy shoulder that went on oct 30!!! sun came out late on thurs and began to set up some crust. very dense snow. great base!!!

Looks nice but bullshit on waist deep. Snow billowing around your waist does not qualify as waist deep.

Seriously stoked for the start of this year, so so stoked. Dug a pit off the cat-track below Wildcat ridge and got the middle weak layer to kick off with a compression test; 12Q2 almost springy though but not quite. Saw propagation got it to collapse on the same layer about 45% through.

Anyone want to go up to Alta tomorrow A.M.? I am at the U but don't have class till 1:00 and am trying to get some turns in before.

Deep on the shoulder yesterday.

Went for a look at Cardiac Ridge today, thin but not bad, noticed this slide on the High Baldy shoulder on the return trip.

I watched you guys it looked really good. I skied further down baldy shoulder. Probably 2 feet of snow in my quick pit, maybe 8 inches of new on a consolidating base. Column failed at 22 and 24 from the elbow at the facet and snirt interface with hardly any energy. I managed to find a rock but no damage. Looks like it's gonna warm up shortly. Get it while the get tens good....

Fun day at alta did a lap off supreme then toured out toward castle and skied a nw facing gulley over there that was nice all the way to Alfs. It has set up a bit more since yesterday but still good turns. Nothing moving except bucketfuls of dense pow...

Did some dusk patrol last night. It's getting warm up there. There were some pocket of north facing consolidated powder mixed in with a lot of melt/freeze cycle snow in other places. Might be a mini corn cycle soon ;)

corn kin be sweet out there early season-jan during sustained hig/dry. green slope behind brighton has brought a smile to my face a time or three:).

What a great afternoon of skiing! It's deep up high. Skinned into Catherines, dug a pit around 10500, facet snow near the ground on N, NW facing. Did two tests, one failed at 16, one at 21, facet snow at ground was un-reactive, but new snow was failing on 2-3. Lots of wind happening, tomorrow is going to be touchy. Be careful out there!

sure is. explored bcc in the mill d area. a lot of wind last night but had died down early. still not enough snow on S or E facing aspects yet but the others were deeper than expected. kept it lower angle for the most part as the only steeper line sluffed pretty well. hope those folks that got injured in albion/catherine's yesterday are ok.

Was up on Patsy's this morning via grizzly, definitely deep up there. Still some shallow, sharky spots though, so watch out if you're heading out tomorrow.

Looks big, hope no one was over there when it went. Got out on Saturday, did some laps at Brighton, it was blower. Headed up high to poke around today, didn't get on anything too steep. A couple woomphs, couldn't get anything to move though.
