If you decide to pass on the Death Ride, I might be interested in buying your spot (I think you can still do that, right). Although, I'll need at least a day's notice.

so the Death Ride is a now an option.
Besides, there's at least 2 benefits:
1) I'd rather puke in the CA Alps than the French Alps
2) 129 miles, 15K feet in one day sounds a lot better than 1128 miles and 120,777 feet in 14 days.
Either way, I expect to ride with you at Downieville.
Oh, don't get me wrong, i signed up for the ride and i am definitely doing it. it just feels kind of like a mixed blessing.
shoe and mrs. shoe, goddamned that makes me so happy to know you guys got chosen as well. thank the lord, you will be there to share the pain. :D good thing is it means you guys will be coming up this spring to ride some of the mountain passes, you are going to friggin love it. passes will probably open for bikes when there are still 10 foot snowbanks on the sides.
well, at this point it makes downieville look alot easier. only problem is i don't have a xc bike, i guess i could borrow or rent one. I will think about it.
nater, what weight is the clydesdale? i am 210 right now, but if i train for the death ride, i might just get under 200, which hasn't happened in about 8 years.

lph -- dude, you can race downieville on your Heckler. heck, it's not a SuperLight or a race hardtail, but crap, after the initial climbs, it's basically all downhill! I'm wishing my Superlight had some extra travel for this...hmmmmm.....
anyhoo, I'm stoked for the Death Ride. And I know I'm gonna be hurtin, because once I'm able to ski in May...I know I'm going to be spending alot of May and June weekends BC skiing rather than getting in long rides....hopefully skinning will help.....we'll see...:)

I remember when I first heard of the Death Ride. It was in June of 95 (back when I was handsome and in shape) and I was on my way to Western States. I drove up Monitor Pass and pulled over to take a break and ended up falling asleep. I awoke to sounds of conversation. A small group of cyclists had ascended the pass and were taking a break. I woke up to their discussion on the Death Ride- even mentioned that in my journal. I almost entered a year or two later.

I have done the D-Ride twice, in '02 and '03, and was thinking about it again this year, but looks like i missed the registration deadline (oh damn! :wink: )
let me be frank, Frank: its a bitch, especially if ya do all 5 summits and all 16k of climbing. I have never been so beat down and as tired as on those rides....
the last year i did it, i bonked big time, as i was dehydrated as it was wicked hot out that day...couldn't get any more fluids down, the gatoraide/poweraide stuff was making me feel sick towards the end of the day, and i was on that last hell'ish climb, when my "buddy" started laughing hysterically...I thought he was losing it like me.....and i was like "whats so funny?" and he goes "dude, you have a HUGE salt stain from your neck to the crack of yer ass...you are for sure gonna bonk soon..."
sure enough.....i hit the wall, and pulled over and collapsed for a while...but the other riders and support peeps (btw, this ride is awesome for its support, aid stations, snack stops, etc...they have it dialed) helped me back on and gave me some "help" on the last bit of climb.....
anyway, have fun!

The LBS also has an entry level roadie for 599 bucks. (trek 1000). Aluminum frame with carbon fork and tiagra components. I got some pedals and cleats i could give you and then you would be all set.
I got it set up with a Zocchi Z1 FR QR20, so i guess i would see it as a 'trail bike?' Everything seems a bit arbitrary to me, and i haven't ridden it yet, so we will see.Quote:
