My coat is kind of out dated but I have nice sweaters. Would it be acceptable? Plus its cold out.

Ive rocked these to all my interviews, without a tie. Button down shirt with a sweater.
Although, I think it really comes down to do you look presentable. Any company that would deny you because you didnt have a sport coat on probably sucks to work for in the first place.
I'll see if I can authorize it.
depends on what type of job it's for I would say. To me the type of job dictates acceptable attire for said interview.
You're fine with the sweater / tie combo. Add a cummerbund if you're feeling under dressed.
probably not a christmas sweater this close to valentines day.
How close to Boston are you?
Im in NH about 1h 40min ish to Boston. This job is on the MA/NH boarder.
Have you considered the Dickie?

You're pretty fit, right (crossfit thread? Ultra marathon)? This gives you a lot of leeway. If you're fat, you'd best have a well tailored suit. If you're in good shape, and your hair and facial hair are under control you should be ok, depending on the organization your interviewing with. Know anyone who works there you could ask?
If you really want the job you should "dress" the part

Sweater vest, you are after all an engineer.

Go for it.
Ask whoever granted you the interview what the dress code is.
i would wear a jacket to the interview. If your jacket is outdated, get a new blue sport jacket. You need one, everyone does, and a sportscoat and tie is versatile in most occasions, even if you dont own a nice suit.
Your hesitation is probably your good instincts kicking in.
How bad do you want the job?
I'd think if it were a very small laid back company working out of someones house/small office setting sweater would be ok. A real office setting requires a suit IMHO or at minimum nice shoes, pants, shirt, tie & coat. Buy the coat, they're inexpensive enough.
Just so we are all clear, pants will be worn?
This totally depends on the job. I wear a suit to work about two days per month. But if someone showed up to interview with me and did not either (1) wear a suit, or (2) call me, ask if I'd like him/her to wear a suit and hear me say "Hell, no, we only wear suits when we aboslutley have to," I would have serious qauestions about either (1) their judgment or (2) how badly they wanted the job, and I'm not hiring people who have bad judgment or who don't really want to work here.
Have to agree with MMP - sport coat and tie makes the most sense to me especially if you're after a customer-facing position, but even if you're not.
FWIW (not much) I've been managing NE teams for quite a while, and what I'm ultimately looking for is someone that is capable of more than the position for which I'm hiring ...
Always dress for your 'next' job.
Also, the east coast / west coast thing couldn't be more true ...
what are you trying to say?
Assuming you've already PM'd Old Larry about the loafers...
I would say no for that. Kohls has cheap suits ($150) that will make you look good. There must be some place around there that would have the same. As a network engineer you're going to have to do plenty of meetings, etc and they want to know you can look good if you need to. I've interviewed for the same positioin before and wouldn't have gone without a suit and tie.
I had an interview last week. I know the guy who was going to interview me- laid back guy who grew up on a farm in northern NM- so I thought I'd just go in with a dress shirt and jacket. My 14yo son saw me in the morning and said, "Dude, it's an interview. You HAVE to wear a tie!" So I did. The executive assistant called to tell me I got the job and she said, "He was really impressed that you wore a suit and tie!"
Friday I interviewed 9 GIS Specialist candidates. The women were in business suits and all the men but one had on suit and ties. And that's an entry level job. And it's even California!
I say suit and tie for sure.
I actually had an interview last week where I was told specifically NOT to wear a suit. Threw me for a loop. Really small shop- suspect they figure you learn more about someone if they are not in a cookie cutter-ish outfit.
I wore a sport coat (Herb Tarlek special) and slightly scuffed loafers. Oh, and a thong.
Ask about dress if you are comfortable doing so. If not, unless you know the jacket is overkill, which you obviously don't, dress well. Which means no to the sweater.
You should never wear a tie without a jacket.
A tie is more formal than a jacket, so you should a wear a jacket without a tie before you wear a tie without a jacket. Unless you want to look like a bus boy.
Don't underestimate a nice leather vest and loincloth combo. Got me my last two jobs.

I have no idea what people expect of a Sr. Network Engineer, but you can't go wrong with a sportcoat....
Edit: Fuck I have no idea how to attach an image.
