Snowbird Opens Friday with Two Lifts, Tram

Snow Continues to Fall as Snowbird Opens Eight Days Early

Snowbird, Utah – Mother Nature came through with another winter storm just as Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort prepares to open Friday, Nov. 14, with two chairlifts and the Tram.

Fresh snow and great snow conditions will greet skiers and snowboarders Friday at 9 a.m. when Snowbird opens for the 2003-04 season with the Gadzoom and Mid-Gad chairlifts as well as the Tram servicing the Regulator Johnson run. The ticket price will be $38 per day.

"Between the five feet of snow we’ve received this month and our new snowmaking system, the conditions are amazing for mid-November," said Snowbird President Bob Bonar.

Snowbird spent the summer installing a new snowmaking system that extends up the Regulator Johnson run near the top of 11,000-foot Hidden Peak. The new snowmaking system is critical to Snowbird’s ability to offer the Tram on opening day.

X-over and I were wondering where you were. We got a good chuckle out of, "Phunk isn't here because he's at work." I think it's the first time I've said it.

The skiing was very good the first few runs. About a foot of creamy fresh stuff on top of plenty of base. Tram laps really kick your ass on the first day. Unfortunately, the clouds got thick and visibility was down to 5 feet. It was a very fun first day - I can't wait until more is open.

Today was absolutely beautiful. Caught the first tram even after having to wait in line to get my season pass - and that first run off to the left of Regulator was bliss. :D A little hard to see, but snow conditions were WAY better than I expected. Wanted to slap myself for not bringing the Big Stix this morning...

Very cool seeing so many people up there too!

AHHH!!!! Had to go to the damn dentist this morning, didn't end up getting the root canal though, which is good, just stupid fillings. Will be there tomorrow and sunday though, who else?

May I say that it was very fine spending an hour this afternoon partaking of such a splendid opening day. The first two runs were quite shakey. I can tell I've got a lot of work to do to get back my strength. The knee feels basically about the same as it did a couple of weeks after I harshed the ACL last May. (How's that usage, Ice?)

I was gonna wait til Alta opened on Thursday to re-regi and come back to the "darkside." But Friday at the Bird was just too much to not warrant the early jump.

A thick, creamy coating of 16" has done wonders for the base. Only hit a few rocks with only one shot taking some p-tex.

My legs are not ready for catching every other tram yet as they are still a lil sore today (Sunday a.m.). Prolly put in around 40k of vert before calling it quits around 3. Sun came out for a couple laps around 1 and the beauty of the Wasatch covered in white was revealed. Simply awesome.

Pros and maggots were about all day. Spun a couple laps with Z early on, talked with Altagirl and Boardeline, spent most of the morning with Str8 and the Bird's race director, then chatted with Sage, Ben Wheeler and Steve Bedford in the afternoon.

Overall, phenominal conditions for Nov. 14th and everyone I saw and talked to is super stoked. With it puking up there today and more forecasted for Alta's opener on Thursday through next weekend and then again on the 25th and then AGAIN for Turkey weekend - the next couple of weeks look sick. Alta's base at Collins is already a solid 38"!!! If any Utard has not been up yet, get up there and GIT SUM - it is too good to pass up!!!
