meats of evil is in the photo program at Utah State. for little logan UT they actually have some pretty decent art programs.
Rochester isn't one of the most scenic place in the world. Especially the RIT campus. But the Photo prog is excellent.Quote:

yeah surprisingly logan is somewhat of art mecca. Although it lacks slightly in culture. I know the photog professers at USU and they are great. Craig law is an amazing nature photographer. We are 30 min from the local hill, 60 to snowbasin and powder mountain and about 90 from the cottonwoods.
Santa Barbara, CA and Rochester, NY are your best programs.
Boulder, CO has programs.
Colorado Mountain College - Rifle and Glenwood Springs have 2yr technical degrees.
Don't they have cameras in AK?
You can take lots of blurry and out-of-focus pictures at Montana State.
Their "option" is pretty much a minor within your major - for example, I, in my history degree, could have pursued the "teaching option", which would have had me taking less history classes and more education classes, along with student teaching.
For that section, I'd believe your degree would be in the "Media and Theare Arts", with the photography option. Instead of it being a photo degree, which it still is, it's labelled an MTA degree w/ the photo minor.
That's my best guess to explain the course catalog's wording...the registrar's office or new student services would have a much better explanation. Slippy of Team13 might know a little too, I think he was an MSU film school guy too - it's the same College, the College of Media and Theatre Arts. All my experience with them is the one Photo103 class I took from them, in which I got a "D". That ended my photo dreams real quick.

CJ: when you know, love, and want real mountains. . bristol is pretty painful. although better than, say, louisiana for skiing im sure.

You sure you really want to be a professional photographer? Photography is a great hobby, but it strikes me as a tough career. I'm sure there are lots of wedding photogs that make good money, but something tells me that's not the direction you'd want to take. Not to say you can't make a living from it, but you really have to be good.
By the way, if you're interested in learning more about nature/adventure photography buy one of Galen Rowell's books. He has several "how-to" type books. The dude was (he and his wife died in a plane crash) incredible.

Based in Vancouver BC, 1.5 hr to Whistler where for $400 as a student you can ski puddles all season. Or 1.5hr to baker where you can ski dirt :mad:

Honestly if you are seriously interested in shooting pics for a living, you are probally better off getting a degree in something othan than photographer, and save the money you would of spent on photo school and use it to buy your self some good gear and teach your self by shooting. Photo schools really only teach you the basics about technique and they donw realy help to develop a photographic eye. The only way you are going to become a better photog is to shoot more pics.
And wedding photography is a once in that moment event. You can't go back and call do over on the bride walking up the aisle if you miss the shot. Talk about stress...Quote:

With a business degree you are guranteed something to fall back on, plus it will help you to market yourself as a photog and will help your personel finances. Answering the question: Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO. A buddy of mine got a photography degree there, and although his portfolio is gorgeous... now he's waiting tables like most photographers. Tough field to make a living in is an understatement.
MBS, you telling me you never took a photo course? I think AKPM needs all the help in the basics (Shutter/Fstop/Focal length, etc.) he can get. I also disagree w/the whole school of thought that says you either have the eye or don't. Photography, especially news and sport (not fine art) photography, CAN be learned. It's not just about raw talent.

some simple artistic composition classes can do wonders for your eye and teach you what makes a image appealing and why.
don't expect to make a (decent) living with anything in the ski/snow/outdoor industry even if you hit the "bigtime". make sure you have the staples of portraits, weddings, location, and commercial dialed. or you could just wait tables.

edit: and the business skills are SO important. i am not lying when i say there are great photogs who make no money cause they suck at business and there are mediocre photgs who are rolling in the dough because they ARE good at business.
No doubt you need to shoot a lot. The learning curve, however, does accelerate if you know what the fuck you're self-critiquing. IMHO every photog should know what the hell those numbers on the lens barrel mean, what the correlation between them, shutterspeed, and depth of field is... basics. You gotta know the rules before you can break them, which is where the really good shots usually are.
i lament, in a way, the conversion to digital/full auto in my industry (news.) There is little incentive to actually be good, more that you do what was stated earlier (F8 & Be There.) The truly good stills journalists remember what it was like to shoot film, and remember that your shotas had to count. If you only had 4 rolls with you, that meant you had ~150 frames to get it right. Now peple fire off frame after frame on Full-Auto and delete the crap during the lulls or the cab ride. Many times the shots that look like ass on the tiny VF on the back are actually great shots on a larger screen.
Getting back to the Auto-function, I obviously hate it. It makes photogs lazy and lowers the bar, IMHO. Knowing what your camera does under specific circumstances and WHY that is the case... especially the fact that it's repeatable, is the essence of "writing in light." What does Shutter Priority do vs. Aperture priority, and when do you use one vs, the other? Why does Auto Focus not always work? How do I use Depth of Field to nudge the viewers attention to a specific area of the frame? What is the "Golden Rectangle?" Shit... how do I make the sky look darker?
Grant, what you do has a very specific skill set, not just photography, and there are VERY few people on the planet that make a living at it. It would help AKPM and any photographer to take several Photography classes just to know what the hell the tool in their hands is capable of. THEN you go out and shoot the shit out of everything.
Tipp- don't you hate to use consumer camcorders? Even my Sony VCX-1000 prosumer annoys me. I miss having a real zoom, focus, and iris.
Yeas, but I dont think that blowing $40k for 4 years of university will get you any where beyond the basics. He would be better off working at a high end camera shop and looking / studying every image that goes threw the door. Thats just my opinion, but I strongly feall that once you learn hte basics the rest is best learned on your own so that you can develope your own style etc.Quote:
