Without bashing the Patrol to hard for just being there... when they are on the hill should it stay the red and black uniform with no exceptions? Or permit looser fit clothing (not park rat big), brighter colors, abstract designs all in the hope of connecting more with the public and showing the love of skiing they have, as well as trying to rid the "old men with badges on the hill" mentality??
Professional can be trendy, but the old school get up could probably stand to go.
red shell with the white cross for the pro's up here,yellow & blue for voly I don't see any reason for a change, the shell IS supposed to be a working uniform they are being paid to do a job ... not participate in a love fest

The stigma that goes along with the red and black quickly loses meaning to me when patrol is hucking bigger than anyone else right under the lift....and stomping.
At alpy that's how you tell the pros and the volly fucks apart. Most vollies can't ski to save their life. Most pros kill it. (There are exceptions to both).

Patrol used to be in Rust & Blue.
Pros began to go to Red N Black in the late 80-early 90s or there about, mainly to delineate themselves from the vollies/NSP.
Lots of patrols don't use either, When I was in Utah we were in International Orange for a spell. Steamboat was in Fluorescent orange when they were owned by the Japanese.
My folks are in all red parkas, black pants, small cross on the sleeves and company logo on the chest. I get asked all the time if I: am a local, work there or why my jacket keeps saying inane shit while I am sitting there talking.
Ski Patrol is supposed to be there when you need them but I am not a huge believer in being noticeable from a distance. Much better to surprise you that way.:biggrin:
I say neon-pink one piece suits - that way they'll be really easy to spot when they come after you for skiing in a permanently closed area.
Visibility is necessary for quick response.
I'm all about losing the old man w/ attitude stigma. Lot of people cant connect w/ us because of the attitude of the few.
Patrollers are out there to make sure you're enjoying it. The rules are common sense.

In the pics, the American clothes are pretty similar to alot of places here. The difference is the Canadian version pictured are the what the vollies wear. Plenty of hills up here have the black / red combo for the pro's. Another difference would be up here they don't ski in the back seat nearly as much as the 'mericans pictured :fmicon:
As a volunteer patroller, I vote on keeping it professional. Red, orange or yellow coat with a white cross stands out pretty well and is pretty bright. I'm 33 years old, so I could give a shit about trendy fashions. As far as patrolling is concerned, my hope is that someone can spot me from a distance. I assume they are able to since we are typically wearing a red, orange or yellow coat with a white cross on it. I would prefer not to wear trendy fashions, but I'm also not skiing at Aspen. I want gear that works and that customers can spot me from a good distance in case they need help. I'm there to ski and to help, not for a fashion show. I would also assume that all patrollers have a love of skiing. Why else would we get up at 4 or 5 in the morning to start a ski day that probably won't end until 5 or 6 at night? We do it because we love skiing!
To be fair, I have noticed that some ski patrollers, especially the older guys, can kind of be dicks. That being said, I doubt making them wear trendy ski clothes and baggy pants on the hill is going to help their outlook on things a whole lot. A huge part of our job is customer service. I can't speak for everyone, but I certainly do my best to spark up conversation on the lift, point out good spots for non-locals, etc. in the hopes of connecting with the public. It's usually the public that doesn't want to connect with us until they need us. Remember, we are not cops. Most patrollers are there to provide first aid and customer support. We are not there to "bust" people for having a good time. If we didn't have a major love for skiing, we definitely wouldn't be out there!
If I was god of the universe it would be:
Pro: subdued dark jacket with small white crosses so they don't get bothered by everyone with a worthless problem, and can stay focused on doing their jobs.
Voly/Safety Patrol: something bright and easy to see.
