Anything worse than putting on a wet, salty wetsuit???

Maybe it's just the psychological anticipation of the event...but I can think of few things worse than putting on a wet, clammy, salty, sandy wetsuit when your on a surf trip and no fresh rinse water is avaible nor any sun yet to dry it out.

Fun times.

But once it's on and the anticpitory agony is gone...it's like: WTF was the fuss all about...let's hit the break.

My trick is to go for a quick swim BEFORE I put the wet wetsuit on.....then I'm already wet and it doesn't matter. And that quick swim REALLY wakes you up when the water is cold, too. an added plus to a morning's surfing.

Add cold to the list and being hungover and you're getting there.

^iliecandy is spot on, if the suit is old, wetsuits tend to get brittle and increase chances of ripping when they're dry.

But hell yeah, putting on a wet wetsuit does suck, especially the older I get.

First the SUP, now the wetsuit. Try paddling out in 6F water in your board short. Surfers sure do complain a lot these days.

And don't piss in it. That is why the neoptene is brittle.

Good point! if you pee in it then it never gets dry so then it doesn't get brittle. Neoprene is for men, I have fireskin in mine ;)

I trunked at a semi DL spot on La Jolla Drive two weeks ago. I was the only guy in the water wearing shorts. Everyone was staring. One of my friends told me that there was a cold front that moved through about four weeks ago that dropped water temps to 60, and I'm assuming people haven't recovered from it. Just an assumption.

Meh, some people in Santa Cruz seem to wear their 4/3 with booties and gloves year round now, so I'm going with "it's just habit". See similar behavior in skiers wearing the same cloths when its 30 and when its -10

Nick, I usually wear my wetsuit as a habit in summer due to upwelling (That and I don't really enjoy a chaffed ball sac.). Unless the surf has been small and there is very little chance for upwelling.

I've seen the water drop a good 10 degrees overnight and the looks on peoples faces is complete surprise that the water was 70 degrees less than 12 hours ago and now it's 60 degrees for the dawn patrol. I know 60 isn't cold but when it was just 70, then it feels cold due to your expectations of it being warm like it was the night before. Usually a good NW windswell will catch some people off guard with upwelling.

also, some guys go for 4+ hour sessions (upwards of 6+ hours on extreme examples) and 4 hours of trunking it in mid to upper 60's isn't really as warm as you would think. By about hour 3 you are definitely starting to get a little chilly if the wind starts to blow

i've usually only got an hour of trunking it in me before i get cold. it's just like skiing, you never want to stop because you're too cold.

Meh, aint that bad, do the plastic bag trick and putting it on is MUCH easier.

Put on my full suit this morning at 5:30 am in the garage. Got it halfway on and was walking outside and felt something in weird around my left knee. Tried adjust the suit and finally stuck my hand down my leg to figure out what was poking me. Pulled out a fat cockroach about 2" long. Screamed like a little girl and did the spaz dance waking up half the neighborhood.

That's worse than a wet, salty wetsuit.

Birdrock has confirmed there is something truly worse than putting on a wet salty wetsuit....Putting on a wet salty cockroach infested wettie would be the worst!

My buddy put on an old wetsuit a few weeks ago that had been sitting in the garage. He was all itchy so he called me asking if I've ever had dust mites infest my wetsuit, I said nope but sounds like you did :fmicon:

Agreed on this one in addition to the cockroach wetsuit. I surfed water in upper 30s and air temp in the mid teens one day (only god knows what the wind chill was), farkna cold. I seriously couldn't even take off my wetsuit, my fingers were like silly putty

that might be reason why when I moved from Maine to Santa Cruz I stayed for 17 years instead of 1. Do not miss changing out of my suit on the boardwalk in a snow storm.
