I need to fix a minorly stripped binding hole and was going to use the epoxy/steel wool method. The only thing is I can't find steel wool anywhere. The only products available are those curly metal scouring pads

or S.O.S Pads, which are the finer steel wool but pre-covered in soap.

Will either of these options work?
Wash the soap out first?
hot water will get the soap right off.
dry a section and it works fine.
(hopefully not on the Rens:wink:)
I prefer JB Weld based on very subjective experience.
Just do it right and heli-coil it. They're cheap enough, and the bit and tap are worthwhile investments for any home shop that has mounting capabilities!

Dry it very well if you do this. Those pads rust super easily and I can't imagine rusty wool would be ideal for what you're doing.Quote:

I have heard that strands of fiberglass mixed into the epoxy are stronger than steel wool. Another option is to buy some inserts from Binding freedom or Quiver killers for that spinner screw. Inserts or helicoils are handy to have around.

This confirms what I noticed over christmas. People from Van are pussies. You should already have an ample supply of steel wool, duct tape, epoxy and bailing wire.

Kevlar would be great ,but I use some fibreglass cloth I think I got from a hardware store ,I cut the strands into 1/2 " pieces ,I mix them with slowset 2-part ,I make sure to wet out the FG BUT I don't want to be resin rich cuz I heard somewhere resin rich layups are weak
mix well let sit for 10min , cram the mixture into the hole ,run in the screw to the point where it will start to spin,let the epoxy setup for a day next to a nice warm wood stove ,crank it down after 24hrs ,if it doesnt spin ... it doesnt spin
I have done this sucessfully 5 times now with no failures, I think if you do stupid shit you will get failures and maybe you deserve them ?
I did this last week on a foam core ski ,I skied it sunday ,I just checked the screw and its still not spinning
Ditto. I did this to two spinners on an FKS heel on XXX-er's recommendation (I used loft insulation, a much more fibreglass-heavy ratio than you might think). They cranked down solid after 24 hours and skied fine all of last winter.Quote:

The consistancy of JB weld isnt going to wet out FG or kevlar filler material very well
I did this on 3 screws of a 4 screw tele binding in a woodcore ski and it held for 5 yrs

^^agreed, just like in a building, the strength doesn't come from the concrete but the rebar running inside. But if you couldn't figure out how to make it to a hardware store to find steel wool I would think twice about doing this yourself.
