I'm feeling a cold coming on. Throat's a little sore and can start to feel it in my nose as well.
I tried Echinacea a couple years ago, but it didn't work. Maybe I didn't take enough, I dunno..........
I can't waste a sick day(s) actually being sick dammit. It's dumping in the hills!
What works? HELP!!!
My wife swears by those zinc lozenges, one brand is Cold-Eze or something like that.
Zinc. Lots of it!! NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ask the pharmacist which loszenges (sp?) taste the worst, because those are the ones that will work the best. Don't chew them at all, just suck on them till they're gone.
And obviously, Vitamin C in mass quantities.
Have you thought of using zinc lozenges?
Echinacea and almost all that herbal stuff is a total fraud. You might as well eat Twinkies.
I don't know about the zinc lozenge things, I've heard good stuff but never seen anything that really confirms their efficacy. Do they do more than just relieve symptoms?
The only thing that's ever worked for me has been plenty of sleep and liquids, but if you've really got a virus you're probably just going to have to ride it out. Being well rested helps (I remember I used to be well rested, sometimes).

boosting your immune system after the virus attacks is goign to have minimal effects.
best thing is not to let your immune system dip to begin with. sleep, vitamins, as a daily regimine.
the other stuff just helps symptoms, not really getting rid of the problem. that just happens on its own. unless its more than a cold.

Exactly! The clinical studies show the best results with all three. I don't have the time to look up the studies, but they're out there. The individual ingredients by themselves are not going to work much better than placebo. It's the combination that has been shown to shorten a cold or prevent it altogether.Quote:

Totally agree w/ basom (!) on this one. Other stuff will help once you get a cold, but the goal should be to avoid them altogether. Shortly after my first knee surgery and associated extra time at the gym, I started getting a cold every 3 months or so. Out of dumb luck, I picked up a fitness magazine standing in line at the store, and there was an article saying that if you're active, work out a lot, etc., then a lot of your body's energy goes to repairing and building your muscles, often at the expense of your immune system. Various suggestions included taking a daily multi-vitamin, eating lots of fish w/ those omega-3's (like salmon), and some other stuff I've forgotten. I started taking a One-A-Day immediately after that, and in the 5 years since, I've had one cold. And that lasted all of 2 days.
Echinacea = maybe, not great evidence but some data. Also different preparations by different companies may give different results since there is no standardization.
Vitamin C = probably not, most data against any benefit.
Zinc = probably not, but inconclusive data and poorly designed studies.
If you're in a very early stage of the virus, and catch it early, a perscription from a doc for amantidine, rimantidine or oseltamavir may reduce symptoms by a day or so.
