I'm thinking the iRiver. Similar specs as iPod (HD Size), plus FM tuner, MP3 encoding, and I wonder if it's easier to monkey with the MP3s I already "own."
Employment, although annoying and cumbersome, must serve a purpose.
I dunno, the iriver tells you how many minutes you can put on it but doesn't tell you what bit rate was used to get that number of minutes. Could be 96bps which would sound like shit. The ipod is 20gig which is a shit pile of music but how many crappily ripped songs (probably what the iriver is using for thier 600hours) is it?
I'd wait a year until the ipod has photo/video capabilities and 15000000000gig of space.

Beav, HD size is the same (20gb). I'm only going to use MP3 for the forseeable future, so don't care if one plays WMV and another AAC.

You have to consider the interface you'll be using to download and transfer music too. iTunes fuggin ROCKS! Some of the others are a giant pain in the arse. I don't know if iRiver integrates into iTunes as well as the iPod or not, but it's worth looking into.
FWIW... I love my iPod. It's with me in the office, car and gym. I also sync my calendar, contacts and email to it with cheap 3rd party software. I'm saving my pennies for the iPhoto iPod now. Color screen with more syncing capabilities and displays your photos.
edit: Also, the iPod works great as a hard disk and easily connects to my XP box and my PowerBook.

Walter Mossberg did a review of the iRiver H320 in the Wall Street Journal last week. Granted, it's not the same model you're looking at, but he describes how iRiver players are "complicated and clumsy, designed by techies for techies."

I have always been a fan of Iriver players. I had a CD mp3 player that I bought a long time ago from them. It worked great for a number of years until I busted it skiing last year.
I believe you can also record to .wav from a optical input with that player. I had a freind who bought one to bring to shows and record. a pretty cool feature that apple does not support.
I will agree that IRiver stuff does tend to be on the techy end of the scale and often some of the best features are hard to get to and hidden in complicated menus.
I somewhat agree with that. I bought one of the flash-based iRivers for my wife's birthday and she can't figure out the interface. She's constantly deleting songs accidently, switching to the tuner when she doesn't want to, etc. It isn't really intuitive. The hard drive based unit may be different.Quote:

I don't use iTunes. I rip my own shizzle and have a bunch of stuff I've gotten elsewhere.
Will either the iRiver or iPod have problems with this? Ideally I'd just drag-and-drop 'em onto the player. I don't see for shit so am not too concerned with pretty interfaces.

No, you can do this. With the iRiver you'll have to use their interface, though. When you connect the player with USB it doesn't just show up as a removable drive. Not sure why they set it up like this, but that's the way it works.Quote:

Here is another alernative to buying an ipod.
if the cali you're talking about is the same as i have, my complaint would be that the controls are somewhat limited. that little joystick isnt as versatile as the ipod clickwheel. scrolling, scanning, menu navigation.......etc.Quote:
