More girls, money, and partying in Vail, plus the coolest maggots live in Colorado. Mammoth is isolated and gets swamped by Californians.....easy choice really.
Also in Vail, you have Beaver Creek, Breck, Keystone, A-basin, within an hour. Within 2 hours you have Aspen, snowmass, aspen highlands, loveland, steamboat and winter park.
Watch out, Vail Extremo...don't slow down, you might get stuck ;)

vail will also help your leg strength with all the drops to flat.
Also: why the fuck is my post in the middle of this thread?
Core vs. Bore
Which one are you?
Probably Both great choices. I've never seen Vail, but I gotta say that Mammoth lakes is a really cool place.
What specifically are you looking for?
The choice is easy.
Mammoth.
It doesn't have the international appeal of Vail and that's good and bad. You won't have tons of out of towners at all times for what I assume is a non-stop bar scene. It's dead during the week (which is a huge plus) but crazy on the weekends when everyone comes up from LA. The nightlife there is still good there though, and there are tons of hotties.
Wanna poach a hot tub? No worries. There are some killer hot springs just a quick drive away.
I've NEVER heard anyone accuse Mammoth Mountain of being flat and boring. It's an awesome mountain.
Also, the BC skiing there is some of the best in the world. It's almost like Mecca. Tioga Pass is only 30 minutes north and the Mammoth valley has some sick shit too. Plus the snowpack is fairly stable, unlike Colorado.
Also, there's a good contingent of maggots that ski there a lot. All the LA mangions make there way up there a lot, and some of us northern folk have passes there too. So you'll never be lacking in people to ski with.
And before I forget, it actually snows at Mammoth. :D ;)
No way. Go to Vail. I heard you can sip champagne while you ski powder, or their powder tastes like champagne, or something like that. :p ;)Quote:

Followme's picture of the bowls is awesome but does not do justice to how small you will feel in the back bowls. Midweek, I was skiing 200+ yd pow lines 2 days after a Sunday night storm. Few people take the time to go back to the Siberia and Mongolia bowls. Also, plenty of hikeable/skinable terrain to lengthen your lines.
Gotta go with Vail.
As a single mountain, Mammoth rules, but if I was spending a season, I dunno whether Mammoth and June would hold enough interest for me. It is pretty isolated but undoubtedly more dramatic and epic than anything in the Vail Valley.
My heart would say Mammoth but I reckon there would be more lodging/job/BC opportunities for a season in Vail.
finding a job isn't my issue...i have two. deciding btwn them is where i'm having trouble. mammoth hospital offered me a position in their emergency room, but it has no benefits. vail offered me a position with the ski school, obviously not as sweet, but including benefits and a 5 mtn pass.
so, when it comes down to it, i just need some insight into what each mountain and town has to offer...
vail will offer you heated sidewalks.

Ski school, your working days period. If your teaching, you will be getting little kids. While that may be rewarding for some, I don't think you will be pushing your skiing to the next level.
Housing will also be a big question, Vail will be expensive, so you may have to drive a long ways.
I spent a couple of seasons in Aspen and then the company I worked for offered me a nice position in Vail. I spent one season in Vail and moved back to Aspen as soon as I could. So I guess I would choose Mammoth.
It all dependds on what you're looking for. Mammoth definitely has better terrain, and it's pretty empty during the week. Also Mammoth has a much longer season than Vail. On the other hand Vail has lots of other resorts nearby, and has a much more cosmopolitan feel. Mammoth is very much a small town isolated in the Eastern Sierras (one grocery store, one resort, the first Starbucks opened about a year ago, and the nearest airport is at least 3 hours away in Reno). On the other hand, Vail is practically a suburb of Denver. Since the two resorts are so different, it shouldn't be a very difficult decision to make. I would deside based on what type of community I wanted to live in and what job sounded better (I suspect your paycheck will stretch a little bit further in Mammoth).
Just go to Vail...If you're a good skier and can ski in the backcountry, I can show you terrain that'll make you crap your pants. In-bounds skiing is fucking whack anyway, Colorado has the best lift-served backcountry terrain around...(read untracked deep)
If you backcountry ski there is only one choice. If you climb (or are at all interested) there's only one choice. If you enjoy people who wear Bogner ski suits, there's only one choice (and it's not the same choice!)
If the terrain around Vail makes you crap your pants; your going to need a colostomy bag in Mammy. East Side Sierra owns Summit CountyQuote:

Snowbound, I moved to Vail 9 years ago this Fall from Idaho....best move I EVER made, you won't regret it. :D
Never argue with a man who buys ink by the barrel or an angry whelk.
Here ya go AC, side view of the second pic, with a little less snow. And yes, that's telekoptero who is well over 6 feet tall standing there.

Brick's Thread Summary thus far:
In Colorado there are some cliffs. When it snows you can put on skis (on your FEET) and jump off those cliffs. Brick has been enlightened. Wow.
I love cliff. I LOVE CLIFF!
now go ski the holy cross couloir which is very close to Vail.....don't slip! The fall off the 200 footer at the bottom will prolly kill you.Quote:

Brick will just wave his dick like a helicopter and fly away from the cliff!
or does dick-waving only make you ski better on the internet, Blurred?
Cold weather in the Middle-East!
Rethink your plan entirely and go to Utah
This is a good thread. I'm bumping it.
You sure that's prudent?Quote:
