I need to break your skis

In addition to my ultimate ski pole basket desing, I am in the process of developing a new way to build a composit ski, that is lighter, stronger, and more damp than anything on the market. This new design, utilizes a carbonfiber construction process unlike any other ski ever made. This process would ultilize aerospace construction methods that would make it much easier and cheaper to produce skis. In adition it would completly elimanate all delam problems that originate from the conventional manufactoring methods. In order to set a benchmark for testing of the protypes, I need to run flexural, and ultimate strength tests on as many fat skis as possible. This is where yo maggots come in to play. If you got an extra set of beat to shit pow skis laying around, or only have a single ski left from a set, you can donate them to the future of ski desing. The success of the protyping phase is crucial to this project, if it goes as planed, Ill be desinging the ultimate pow skis this summer with the imput form the maggot collective.

I don't have any skis, but I have a question-- are you concerned about the fact that older beat up skis may have different structural properties from new ones?

edit: Any desire for old non-fat or mid-fats?

Didn't Dude le run a bunch of flex tests on various ski models a couple years ago? maybe powmag era? Maybe some of his data might be of use???? Just spitballing ideas.

OK, great idea, but fatal premise in your design of the testing benchmark. Used skis will suffer from material fatigue and structural damage (i.e. mounting holes, base damage, edge repairs, etc....). All of this will greatly effect the performance of the ski when compared to the original structure when it left the shop floor. Therefore, when comparing the becnhmark data to the prototype you may believe you have a very stiff ski, when infact it has the stiffness of an intermediate cruiser.

Enlist a shop rat to get you in after hours so that you can flex unadulterated skis. I believe that this would allow for the most accurate comparison. In addition, ensure that you testing methods can be repeated easily with a high level of precision.

I too have been kicking around the idea of building skis avocationally, and putting some ideas down on paper. I'm looking at building lightweight wood/fiberglass skis. Drop me a line if you want to chat about different ideas.

Edit: BTW, I hope you have a degree in materials engineering if you want to do carbon fiber cheaply and successfully.....

so Roth finally talked you into the ski thing huh? i got a pair of ffl iggies that are beat to shit that you can use. that should be a good pair to test for durability. i will need unlimited tickets to baker and a bright, shiny loaner jacket for pics in exchange.

As far as background goes, Im doing the R&D for the carbonfiber layup construction as my senior project for my Plastics and Composit engineering technology degrees. My school is one of only 5 in the country that teach this, so I got a pretty good background in composits. The construction techniches are different than waht DB and Goode use, the technique / materials I am going to use are aerospace materials, that just recently dropped in price last year to more "affordable" prices.

As far as testing used skis go, we need to test them in additon to new skis in order to get an idea of levels we need to have durring fatigue testing of the prototypes. Also testing a ride variety of used skis is helpfull, as we can learn a lot from there layup structour in regards to there stiffness and strength over time.

So yeha, I need as many skis totest / break as possible,wider the waist the better too.

If you make a big assumption on what the stiffness was in the beginning. All your going to learn is what a used ski performs like, not degradation over time.

I'm curious how low your COGS will be - at low volume CF isn't cheap for a dependable source. Goode makes DB Skis, their own skis, water skis and poles so they've a fair amount of volume to make up for this.

I am also testing multiple pairs of brand new skis, so I got the degredation of stifness / strength covered.

As far as CF goes, for this project i am getting almost all materials donated by the supplies via Westerns relationships with various indsutry sponsors, and to cover other costs I am personally sponsored in this project by a company that specifies in highend composite sporting goods, which in turn bys the materials in bulk.

Your missing my point - your assuming that the strength of the new skis is the same as the original skis. For many reasons, manufacturing variances, model changes, material changes this is a bad assumption.

Yeah I am totally missing your point.

If i test several current production skis, brandspanking new off of the ski shop wall, I can determin the avereage flex index, ultimate strenght etc, of skis currently on the market. Testing a variety of used skis will give me a idea of the same charectersitcs after varying degrees of use.

Unfortunaly I am in absolutly no position to make any gaurenties of that sort yet.... This project is just in the very begging of the R&D stage, and Im dooing it as a senior project for a local company that is helping to pay the material costs that exceed what I can personally pay for. However if this project is a sucess and are predictions are correct, there is a chance that down the road said company will be producing skis, if not, i can hopefullly use the info gaind from this project to devlop a ski for another company. But right now that is way way to far down the road to make any claims / promissies etc.

Im working more on a revolutionary way of actually producing carbonfiber skis, vs something completly different than what they are doing. While i am working on skis that will have diffenrent flex dimetions and construction than db, my goal is to develop a process that will dramatically decrease the production time and costs of compsit skis.
