If you had 180 minutes to ski RIGHT NOW and you could have............

12 inches of fresh on demand on top of a 100" base and you could have this at ANY resort you want, but you have to leave RIGHT NOW and all your gear and ski clothes are already in your vehicle as we speak:

A. Where would you go? Rememeber you have 3 hours only, including drive time.

B. How many minutes out of those 180 could you realisticlly (sp?) get on the snow with these limitations? Remember you have to be back to work within those 3 hours too.

Just a dream I had last night and work gave me 3 hours exactly to go to the mountain and get back for work. I think Im feeling a bit stressed and REALLY want some damn snow.

A. I'd have to pick Beaver Mtn, Utah with the time and proximity issue.

B. I think I would get in about 80 minutes on the snow. Man I would love that today.

Simply Friday time waster, and a nice couple minute fantasy of leaving right now for some fresh powder.

Are you just trying to rub it in that you could actually pull this off? From work I could get to Stevens Pass in 1.5 hours or so. No way I could even ski a run before I'd have to drive back. Maybe if I hauled ass and drove with my boots I could get in one run :)

Nope not trying ot rub anything in but the Rev seems to be. I simply love the fact that I will be able to do this and try to get work to give me 4 hours per week and get 2 of those on the mountain. I gotta work out some comp time deal.

And one run would still be good enough RIGHT NOW, would'nt it?? :D

Three hours? Shit, I'd blow most of that to and fro decent places.

So either Bromont or Olympia. Bromont would give better terrain, but Olympia would give me more time on the slopes (~90 min).

Sick and ashamed and happy (or maybe the Mont Saint Bruno - I could get most of those three hours on the slopes and that would include about 20 runs),

It probably would, but I know I'm so indecisive I'd probably waste too much time thinking about whether I should go or not.

I agree the A-Star would help. You didn't specify what type of vehicle, after all :)

I do this several times a week all winter long. I can go in to work for a couple hours, head up and ski for a couple hours, and grab lunch on the way back to work. It's under 30 minutes from the office to Alta including time to change into gear. I do have a comp time deal at work which helps too - if it's really a foot or more I'd take most of the day and just make up the hours later. There's definitely a tradeoff in pay to have the flexibility but it's worth it...

20 min up on the gondola(s)
40 min run down the backside down the Comb d'Audon
20 min back up (gotta go back up before you go down)
10 min down

Heading that way tomorrow. Will drive slower and stay longer tho!

Seriously? I've gone up for one or two runs at the end of the day plenty of times. It's always worth it. Hell, I've even driven up just to have beers with friends when I'm too late to ski. Just getting up in the mountains improves my mood from work 1000%...

This is really funny that you picked 3 hours, because a round-trip ski day of 3 hours has been my reality for years!

I used to be able to take 1/2 vacation days whenever I wanted during the winter. That would give me just about 3 hours round-trip, or about 2 hours and 10 minutes actually on snow and lifts. I learned to ski real fast on days that I just wanted to jam on vert.

I could get about 11,000 vert an hour on one of the faster chairs. I had a little routine that I'd do on pow days. If it was a normal mid-week pow day, I'd leave the house at 8:30, be on the first chair at 9 (even with a 5 minute liftline) and have well over 20,000 verts of freshies as I skied to my car at 11:10.

Making an 11:30 call was not a big deal as my territory started in a city at the mouth of the canyon. (For privacy, and to avoid publicizing an already over-publicized ski town, and of course cuz the place sucks, it shall remain nameless in this description.)

Anyways, that used to be my routine. Now I have a new boss who doesn't allow "halfers" and so that's the end of that.

10 4-minute runs
1.5 minutes to strip down, throw the gear in the car, use the pisser one last time, start car, go!
41 minutes to get back to work

Hmmm, maybe I'll try this a few times this year. Wonder if the 3-hour lunch break would fly with the boss?:D

Probably Mt Baldy. It'll take about an hour to get there, so I'll get in an hour of skiing. Unfortunately, this is in a fantasy world. Here's what would really happen:

11:00 leave work thinking traffic will be OK
11:30 Stuck in traffic on the 10 freeway
11:45 Still stuck in traffic, only 2 more miles to my exit
11:50 Start driving up mountain
12:00 Hit heavy traffic at chain controls
12:15 Finally get past chain control
12:16 Stuck behind family of 10 in a minivan going up the hill at 5 mph
12:30 Get to bottom of hill
12:31 Realize that those lazy bums still haven't started the lift (Baldy isn't known for opening on time when it snows)
12:45 Get on just-opened chair
1:05 Get to top of mountain (these chairs make Alta's look like high speed quads)
1:06 Realize I'm going to be late getting back to work and haul ass to the bottom
1:10 Back in car driving down
1:15 Getting frustrated with slow traffic
1:20 Traffic comes to a complete halt
1:25 Road is closed due to accident
2:45 Finally back at work
2:46 Explain to boss that I saw an old lady hit by a car while on lunch break, so I had to take her to the hospital.

If we got that much snow at Mountain Creek, they would declare a state of emergency in New Jersey and close all the roads :(

...but if they didn't, it'd take me about an hour to get there from work... season pass + brother's condo on the hill = quick car to skiing time frame and small "mountain" = short lift ride...

I guess I'd be riding the lift with Road Trip. I'd head to Pipeline for my runs. Although, that's still a slow lift. But that would give me the time to roll a fatty. I probably wouldn't come back to work.

You know, Pipeline was so much better back when it wasn't re-opened... I'm getting all misty eyed just thinking about it! The "Blizzard of 1996" had me stuck in a condo there for 3 days and I must have hiked it and skied it about 5 times before they opened the lifts!!

This scenario is real for me....a good dump happens and I take off from work in time to make first chair.....it happens all the time.

I throw on my ski clothes at work, grab my boots and head for the hill at about 8:45. 7 or 8 minutes later I' m parked and heading for my locker. After about a 3 minute ritual of putting on my boots and grabbing my gear, I'm skiing to the lift. So 10 or 11 minutes I'm ready to get on the chair.

This is the Fernie 30cm rule, if there is a good dump of snow overnight many businesses will have a sign on their door saying they will be back at noon.....(the inconveniances one must endure when liviing in a ski town:D )

Now I usually stretch it out till about 12:30 (12:00 to 12:30 being my lunch break so it doesn't really count).....But if all the time I had was 180 minutes I
could ski 158-160 minutes of that time...yup it's a tough schedule to keep, but someones gotta do it!!! (These grueling time restraints that one must put up with...sigh);)

I build houses up in Whistler and before we build someone a house we tell them that we have a 20 cm rule (8 inches). If it snows that much we no worky. Easy to keep the crew motivated to work and to never want to quit or fuck up.

The owners usually think we are joking when we tell them this in the spring... but we say if you no likey get someone else to build your house. (very nice to have a great reputation and people lined up for you to build their house) :p
